Who: Pyrrha and Diana
What: The beacons are lit! Gondor calls for aid! Diana has a dream about a Warning Fire being lit.
When: This morning
Where: Their place
Warnings: Mentions of an ancient evil that destroys worlds
Diana hadn’t known what to expect from her dreams, but whatever was coming, she didn’t think it would be good. Not with the world in mourning and fear and hate were running rampant. But what did happen was not something she’d ever expected. Diana had been at work, chatting with her colleagues while she worked on a statue when she’d heard the news report. Turning to stare at the television screen, she could scarcely believe what she saw.
The ancient warning fire had been lit.
Steppenwolf had attacked Themyscira, and Diana could only assume the worst had happened to her home. She didn’t know if her mother had been the one to light the warning fire or not, but she seriously hoped she had been. But regardless of that, she needed to talk to Bruce, so she quickly got a plane ticket to Gotham so she could talk to him about what was coming.
She woke with a start, a pit in her stomach at what was coming in her dreams. She sat up and rubbed her face, brushing her hair out of it. When she shifted to get out of bed, that’s when she saw it.
“Shit,” she cursed under her breath. The Amazon Motherbox was sitting there. It wasn’t active, thankfully, but the fact that it was even here unnerved her. She needed to talk to Kitty, needed the box to be kept hidden and under constant surveillance. Knowing how Orange County worked, with this box being here, there was a chance Steppenwolf would invade one day.
Getting up, she hesitantly picked the box and carried it out to the kitchen. It was morning, but Diana needed a drink in order to handle this. Setting the old and alien box on the counter, she went to her liquor cabinet and poured herself a stiff glass of whiskey before she knocked it all back in one drink. She then poured a second glass, her gaze fixed on the box as though the thing would spring into life at any second and Steppenwolf would come for it.
“Diana?” Pyrrha could move around a lot better than she had before. Her aura helped do a lot of the work once the doctors were done. But she still limped, and it was still hard to breath. She also tended to wear chokers and scarves to hide the wound on her throat, though she hadn’t put one on when she’d woken up.
“Is everything all right?”
Diana looked up at Pyrrha. “Oh, Pyrrha, I’m sorry, did I wake you?” She asked. Diana hadn’t woken up screaming or anything, and she didn’t think she’d screamed in her sleep, but she was still afraid that she might’ve disturbed Pyrrha. She clearly still needed her rest.
“Not entirely,” she responded to Pyrrha’s question. She took a sip of her drink, then brushed some hair behind her ear.
“Do you want to talk about it?” If she’d noticed the thing on the table, she wasn’t pointing it out. Pyrrha would prefer Diana to bring it up herself. So she hobbled over to the fridge and pulled out a water.
Diana tossed back the rest of the glass of whiskey, keeping one eye on the box sitting on the counter. She was afraid that if she took her eye off of it, it would activate.
“I had a dream. I work at the Louvre in Paris and I was getting a statue ready for display and chatting with my co-workers when a news report came on. A fire had been lit in a temple in Greece and no one knew how it had happened or what it even meant. But I did. It is the ancient warning fire. Men have long since forgotten what it meant, and I know it was a message from my mother, or one of my Amazon sisters, that Steppenwolf had returned and attacked Themyscira.” This was something that was going to require some explanation.
“That box is one of three identical boxes,” she said gesturing towards the seemingly innocuous yet ominous box. “5,000 years ago, a being by the name of Steppenwolf came to Earth. He had conquered and destroyed countless planets. These boxes, called the Mother Boxes, combine to become what is called the Unity. With it, Steppenwolf changes the planet into a hellscape and his army of Parademons set out to kill any who stand against them.”
Pyrrha sipped at her water as she listened. She felt her jaw tense, and forced it to relax. “There are aspects of that story that sound frighteningly close to some things in my dreams.” Power, hidden relics, and people who would use them for their own ends. “If your dreams have given you that, what happens if the others show up?”
“If the others show up, then I would expect Steppenwolf would not be far behind. And in order to stop him, we would need to form our own Unity. That Unity was once an alliance of Amazons, Atlanteans and men. With Superman dead, it will be more difficult to form a Unity this time in my dreams.” Diana took a slow breath. “But here in Orange County, there are plenty of heroes and fighters that I believe we could form our own Unity.” She was already making plans to form a front line to take on Steppenwolf and the Unity should such a thing occur.
“My team will be there,” Pyrrha promised. She knew she couldn’t actually speak for them but she felt she knew them well enough that they’d respond if necessary. And there were others, so many others. “I just hope I’m given enough time to recover.”
Her hand went to her throat. “I learned the hard way to take something on unprepared.”
Diana gave Pyrrha a little smile, reaching out and gently setting her hand on her shoulder. “Thank you, though I also hope that there is time enough for you to recover. I would welcome fighting beside you.” Though inwardly, Diana hated asking people to risk their lives, especially Pyrrha when she’d just survived death.
“Know that I will do everything I can to prepare people for what may come. And I will start with telling the story of what happened when Steppenwolf attacked my world the first time. One thing we can do is do our best to make sure that if Steppenwolf shows up, he does not get his hands on this box.” Diana didn’t know if the other two Mother Boxes would show up here, but if they did she had a feeling they’d show up in unknown places.
“There might be people who’ve fought someone like him. Or like enough that they’d have ideas on how to help.
Pyrrha gave Diana a tense, but reassuring smile, “We won’t let this world end.”
“Precisely. I know there are other superheroes like me, and they are the ones I will have on the front line, as it were, to fight Steppenwolf himself. Others would fight the Parademons, of which there could be millions of. And the Parademons are attracted to fear. And the world I dream of is ripe with fear in the wake of Superman’s death.” Diana felt fear herself, not knowing the state that Themyscira was in.
“No, we won’t. As long as I draw breath, I will keep this world safe.”
Smiling, Pyrrha got to her feet and shuffled over to Diana. All she could do was hug her. But sometimes a hug was enough.
