Having gotten back from Jordan in the midst of yet another Orange County crisis, Freya had found herself once against thrust into the midst of fighting things and her work getting backlogged. As if there hadn’t been a lot of work she would need to get caught up on in general. But somehow despite that, dealing with Evie’s dreams and then helping Klaus locate Ansel, Freya had managed to get caught up.
At least with the paperwork. Because there were meetings as well that she needed to get to. Such as her appointment with Padme. She had met with the other woman a few times already so it wasn’t like it was an appointment that made no sense. It was just one of those moments where Freya had been so buried in catch up work that if she hadn’t gotten the alert, she probably would have forgotten.
As it were though, Freya had gotten the alert and made her way to where the two were meeting, ordering a tea while she waited.
Meeting Freya had been incredibly helpful because it wasn’t often that Padme found a woman that she connected with quickly that worked in the same kind of industry as her. Working with the UN was definitely on Padme’s mind as a future option, but right now it seemed too much like following her father’s footsteps and she wanted to forge her own path at the moment. Today was a bit busier than she expected it to be and she realized it was almost time for her meeting with Freya.
Thankfully she wouldn’t be late, but she wouldn’t be her usual few minutes early. She silently grumbled to herself about missing paperwork as she made her way into the restaurant and spotted Freya. Seeing her friend made her shoulders relax and a genuine smile came onto her face, “Hey, sorry about that. Always fun to try and figure out where missing paperwork went before you showed up to a place. How was Jordan?”
While Padme was worried about following in her father’s footsteps, Freya’s work was basically the opposite of her father. Yes, he was a congressman but his votes and beliefs were in direct conflict with the work Freya did. He was still annoyed at her for what she had said at the opening of Pimpernel Outreach since she hadn’t let him use the nonprofit for good publicity to erase his crap statements and votes.
“It’s fine, I definitely know how that goes.” There was always something that needed to be done in their line of work, be it catch up work, trying to get ahead or just the general work that had to be done. “Jordan was good. A lot to be done, supplies to deliver.” Plus her side gig but that was something she kept more to herself. Especially since it wouldn’t be all that easy to explain how she was able to get from the refugee camp to Syria to look into war crimes. Not until Padme was more familiar with the Dreams and what could come across. Such as Freya’s magic and thus ability to do transportation spells like that.
“Well, I’m sure it’s good to be back. Sometimes it’d be nice to take a actual vacation and not a work one. Because even if you get to go to somewhere overseas it’s always more work to be done there,” that was the only downside. Sometimes Padme wished she could see more of the places she went on aid missions, but there usually wasn’t an extra time. The waiter came by and asked if Padme wanted anything and she put in an order for tea with a thanks.
“Oh man, I can’t wait for the weekend. I seriously just want to move as little of possible this week,” Padme was thankful that there usually wasn’t a ton of things that needed to get done on a weekend at her company so she could usually find time to just relax, but it had been one of those weeks already and she was just so ready to sleep in and not think about work. Maybe she would even have to go get a massage.
“It is.” Even with the fact that she had ended up arriving in the middle of an Orc battle and thus had been stuck fighting those things for two days. Who needed sleep? “Honestly, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I went on an actual vacation.” Sometimes work ended up being enjoyable such as when she had taken Evie to U.N. Week because she had needed to fill in but it had been less stressful than other trips. But an actual vacation? That was something she couldn’t quite see.
“That hectic then?” Because there were few things that could really lead to that sort of comment. Or maybe it was more common than Freya was aware of. Either way.
“Sometimes I even get a little confused when I have a weekend to do nothing but hang out with my dog and a good book, but I’m taking full advantage of it this weekend,” Padme admitted with a laugh, “I don’t know what to do with a longer than a couple day vacation, but it’d be nice to have one. Especially if there was a beautiful pool or a spa area that overlooked the ocean.” Those sounded like heaven on earth right now and maybe she would schedule herself a massage this weekend - that didn’t count as moving around a lot, right?”
“It’s been busy. We’re working with Boeing for sending supplies over and it’s been a bunch of crazy meetings and a couple last minute changes. Although, there’s been one good thing to come out of it,” Padme was still a bit shy about it, but Freya was her friend and she wanted to chat about it, “there’s a nice guy from Boeing that I’ve run into a couple times. He’s cute too.”
“I’m pretty sure my brothers would be very confused if I actually took time off to do something like that….” Of course given her family she tended to end up needing to solve some problem or run interference and so even on her supposed days off, there was always something going on. Still, Freya made sure to set aside even some time for herself with yoga. And Evie certainly gave her breaks in the madness just as she did the same for her girlfriend. Who was currently fixing the mess of her own brother so Freya was left to work work and more work.
Freya well understood the headache of trying to negotiate with large companies. Though Padme’s trailing off of something good coming of it did cause her to quirk a brow inquisitively. And then she got the answer.
“Ohhh, a cute boy is it? Well, certainly nothing wrong with that and clearly if he’s interested in helping you know that you have things in common.”
“That’s why I’m glad I don’t have to deal with my sister - she’s off doing her own thing,” Padme pointed out with a grin, “your family is definitely an interesting one.” Padme was the baby of two girls, so she didn’t deal with as much drama as Freya did with her larger family. Sola was off doing her thing with her husband and children, but didn’t live in California so the two didn’t see each other all the time.
“And yeah, he’s kinda cute. He’s younger though, so it’s a bit odd and he’s definitely go an interesting personality. He’s super smart, obviously, but he’s also really impulsive and so enthusiastic and he reminds me of a labrador,” that comment made her chuckle a little, “And it is very heartening to know that he at least supports the idea of helping people. I’m definitely sick of people that are only about serving themselves.”
“That is definitely one word for it.” Yet she wouldn’t change them for the world. Usually, sometimes she wished for at least some peace and quiet. Or less drama. But after so many years separated from them - both here but especially the dreams - she’d take all the drama and headache in a heartbeat.
“Nothing wrong with a bit younger,” After all, Evie was a few years younger than Freya though she certainly didn’t act it. “Sounds like he could keep you on your toes.” Smiling some, Freya took a sip of her tea, “I know what you mean though. I don’t think I could be with someone who didn’t at least support what I do.” Even the people she would have flings or one night stands with while she’d been abroad had been the type to care about people on a larger scale - even if they hid it most of the time.
“At least things are never boring,” that was the one thing that Padme never wanted her life to be. Freya’s family was a lot busier than hers, but they both had a lot of love for their family and would do anything for them. Someday Padme was going to have to make sure to actually meet all the members of Freya’s family.
“And yeah, he’s definitely interesting. We didn’t get along very well at first, since I met him during a work meeting and wasn’t amused by his antics, but we’ve run into each other a few times since then and it’s been more relaxed and fun,” she explained and smiled, “It’s so important. I think having at least similar moral views on things like are important.” This was why she was friends with Freya because they had a lot of similar views on things and that was important to her.
“No, they definitely are never boring.” Nor had they ever been. Even when they had all been in school and Freya was off doing her different after school activities, or before when she would beat up the neighbor kids for picking on her brothers and being told how she wasn’t acting the proper lady. But she would always defend her siblings, even if half the time she was hitting her head against the wall because of something or another they did.
“Well to be fair, there’s a time and place for such things.” The blonde certainly could understand that. “That’s good though. In the work we do? We need to be able to relax and if someone can help with that? Then I say great.”
Smiling, Freya nodded.
“It is though. Some things are just too important to brush off as a difference of opinion.”
That last statement was exactly why they were able to be friends. Some things you couldn’t just brush away - morales were an important part of being human and you really needed to see who a person truly was to determine if this something was going to work for a friendship or relationship. Padme knew she couldn’t be involved (romantically or otherwise) with someone who didn’t share some of the same fundamental values and that wasn’t a path she wanted to follow down.
“Okay, we are totally getting way too deep for this lunch meeting,” Padme teased with a smile and she noticed that the waiter was coming back with her tea, “Alright, let’s get some food ordered and talk about something completely fluffy - like the royal wedding or something.” Sometimes when your job was a bit hectic you just needed some fluff in your life to relax you.
It really had gotten deep for a lunch meeting. Though the comment on about the royal wedding nearly made the witch choke on the tea she had just taken a sip of as she recalled the text she had gotten from Evie about how she had needed to travel by rooftop because she had forgotten about that when she had decided to fly into London that Friday.
“Yes, food and something fluffy. Sounds perfect.”
