Every time Rose saw Klaus at Baxter’s they had talked about her coming to visit his gallery, but it never actually happened. Rose was either working one of her two jobs or felt so tired after them that she just went home and fell asleep. Today was one of those rare days she had off from both jobs, a fact she was happy about since it was Friday. It seemed the perfect opportunity to go and see Klaus and she hoped the surprise would pay off.
She stopped by Baxter’s to pick up his usual order; that’s what you did as an adult, right? You brought a kind of gift when you were going to see something of there’s. Well, it made sense in Rose’s mind anyway and she held his coffee and scone as she jumped on the nearest transit to head over.
Art wasn’t something Rose had an eye for, but as she stepped into the gallery, she felt comfortable. She had never actually been to one before and she had expected white walls and a more sterile feel to it; something you might see in a chic movie or show on the telly. No, this felt much more comfortable and she couldn’t help but grin as she glanced around.
Niklaus was in the back doing some paperwork when he heard someone walk in. Of course he had employees that could handle the customer, but he needed a break from the paperwork. Klaus stepped out of his office only to find Rose in his gallery.
“Well, well,” he commented that devilish grin on his face. “If it isn’t my favorite barista. About time you showed up here,” he quipped with a smirk.
Rose glanced up as she heard someone walk out, a grin spreading across her face when she realized it was Klaus. “It’s a hard life being a barista and a waitress! Leaves for little me time and me time usually constitutes sitting at home in my pjs, watching the telly.” Alright, probably more than Klaus needed to know, but Rose shrugged it off. “I brought you a house warming gift. A couple months late, but better late than never, yeah?” She handed him the coffee and bag with the scone inside.
“This is just the beginning, but it’s already beautiful,” she said, looking around again. “Anyway I could convince ya to give me a private tour?” She glanced at him, raising an eyebrow to question.
Klaus wasted no time, already pulling the scone out of the bag to take a bite. “If this is your idea of a housewarming gift I certainly won’t complain,” he quipped with a smirk. “I suppose I can give you a tour.” Everything in his gallery was grouped together by style. “Is there any particular style that’s your favorite? We can start there.”
Rose was ashamed enough to blush and shook her head. “I have to admit, I don’t think I know enough about art to choose a place to start.” She took his arm, smiling up at him. “But I trust the person who will be giving me a tour to show me the very best aspects of his gallery!” Rose had an appreciation for art, but was sure she didn’t know it as well as Klaus or the people who frequented this place.
“Maybe you can help tutor me as you give me the tour?”
“I think that can be arranged, love,” Klaus said as he led her through the gallery. “I am partial to Impressionism.” Granted there wasn’t really a style Klaus wasn’t fond of. Well, Pop Art, maybe. He could only stand to have a few of those pieces at a time. “Here,” he gestured to an impressionist painting. “We have a painting by Nancy Friese,” the woman was known for her landscapes colors. He figured it might be something Rose would enjoy.
Rose tilted her head as she examined the painting and smiled. “It’s beautiful! It’s so strange how it looks real, but also very much like a painting...if that makes sense.” She blushed a bit, wondering if she sounded ignorant when it came to describing the artwork. Really, it was just how the painting looked to her. She felt like Klaus wouldn’t judge her and she was thankful that they were alone.
“Is it weird that it seems to use the same kind of colors? Or the same kind of...tone?” She glanced up at him to get his professional opinion.
“It makes sense,” he confirmed with that devilish grin of his. “It’s what art is about. To take you to another place. Make you think it’s real. Even if it’s just brush strokes on canvas.” It was part of what he loved about art. It could do different things for different people, be different things for different people. It was all about how you looked at it.
“Not at all, love,” Klaus replied. “Most artists tend to use the same tone throughout their works.”
Hearing his reassurance made her relax a tiny bit. She wasn’t sure how serious Klaus took to art and didn’t want to make herself look completely stupid in front of him. Still, she turned back to the artwork, wondering what it was that he saw when he looked at them.
“What is it that you like most about art?” she asked, her eyes sliding over to take him in.
“I like that it can be different things to different people. It all depends on how you look at it. I trying to inrept what that artist was thinking or feeling when they put paint to canvas. It’s just an incredible way for one to express themself.” He could talk about art all day really.
Rose smiled as he spoke, seeing the passion he had for his job. She turned to look at the rest of it, marveling at seeing it in her own perspective and his.
