Well, this was certainly a different kind of experience.
Rose had been heading to the bus stop to head home when she heard screams in the distance. That was never a good sign. She glanced around, noticing a lot of people were talking among themselves and pointing up. Shielding her eyes, she glanced up as well, squinting against the sun.
There seemed to be people climbing the various buildings around them. Almost like a swarm. She squinted a bit more, trying to make out what kind of people were doing it...some kind of publicity stunt?
A louder shriek sounded by her and she started, looking around for the source of the scream. It didn’t take her long to see another girl, standing stock still in the street. Rose followed her line of sight and had to do a double look. She wasn’t sure what it was, but it was big and green. For a split second, she thought that it was The Hulk. But that was ridiculous...wasn’t it?
Nope, think of where you are. She sighed and took a step back, until she saw that thing start to charge towards the girl. She looked like she was frozen in her spot and Rose yelled.
“Run! You’ve gotta run!” The girl looked her way, but the words didn’t seem to register. Sighing, Rose glanced around, realizing no one else was going to help. She only had a split second decision before she was running towards the girl, grabbing her hand and pulling her along with her.
“What were you thinking? You can’t just stand there!” Rose glanced behind her, happy to notice that the green thing wasn’t following behind them...for now.
She left the girl at the corner of a coffee shop, telling her she should probably go straight home. Good advice really, but Rose’s curiosity was getting the better of her. She figured if she stayed out of sight of those big hulking things, she’d be fine.
It was a good idea at least.
Going out today hadn’t been the best decision Elsa had made this week. It was like an army had shown up. An army of big green brutes, some of them riding huge wolves and others flinging green-tinted fireballs at innocent people. Those ones seemed to be thinner and lankier. They communicated well, followed orders, and moved like a well-defined fighting force.
Something rumbled down the street. Some large beast pulling what looked like a spikey catapult.
What was next, dragons?
A large woman spotted her, pulling back the drawstring on a bow bigger than she was. Elsa brought up an ice shield just in time to stop the arrow. Mostly.
The point slashed across her side and she skittered back, then dashed down an alley and to another street. She thought she recognized the woman facing her. “Rose??”
Then something screamed through the air, and Elsa ran forward, covering them both in a dome of ice. Spikes cracked through as the catapult boulder bounced off the dome.
Before she could recover, shadows appeared around the dome, and she could hear the Orcs talking.
“We weren’t told they had magic.”
“We weren’t told a lot of things.”
A woman’s gravely voice interjected, “It doesn’t matter. We need another hundred souls for the portal. Try not to kill too many of them.”
She beat her sword on the shield. “These ones are strong. Worth at least three souls each.”
Rose turned at the sound of her name, not realizing the danger she had been in. It took her a moment to process everything and she looked at her rescuer. “Elsa?!” She cringed as the boulder shattered around them. “Bloody hell, cheers mate!” She was able to give her a small smile before her attention was turned back to those outside the dome.
As they talked, she shot Elsa a quizzical look, tilting her head to the side. “What the hell?” Her heart was beating fast as she tried to take everything in. Were they going to die? Yeah, it sounded like they were going to die.
“Whatarewegonnadowhatarewegonnado?” This was Rose’s first encounter with the more sinister side of the dreams. She looked at Elsa, hoping her friend was, literally, keeping her cool.
Elsa was terrified. She wasn’t a warrior. Hell, she wasn’t even a warrior Queen in her dreams. But she was the only one among the two of them who could stand a chance against big green monsters.
So she swallowed her fear and grabbed Rose’s hand. “Whatever you do, don’t look back and don’t let go.”
Then she opened a hole in the dome and pulled Rose through it. As they ran, she created an ice slick behind them that suddenly jutted in a hundred different directions with spikes.
Rose could only nod her head in agreement and ran after her, careful to keep to her feet. Despite Elsa’s personal fears, Rose couldn’t tell that she was as shaken as Rose felt. She wondered if having powers made someone feel braver because they could use it to their benefit in a situation like this.
Rose heard a noise behind them and, despite Elsa’s warning, glanced behind her. “Bloody hell, they’re still coming!” Elsa had a good plan of defense behind her and a few monsters had caught themselves in the spikes. But they seemed smart enough to figure out they just had to smash them and continued their pursuit.
Rose tried to come up with something to help them, something to contribute to the rocky situation they were in. She thought of something and pulled on the hand that was grasped in Elsa’s. “Wait! Can you make an avalanche? We could try and bury them!”
“An avalanche?” It was a good suggestion, and Elsa led Rose down a small alleyway. The orcs chased them, just as she’d hoped, and snow suddenly buried them. Elsa let out an ecstatic woop, “That actually worked!”
Rose couldn’t help but laugh and gave Elsa a hug. “Yes! We did it!” A guttural growl could be heard from the snow and she turned towards it. “But maybe we should find a safe place for now!” Rose wasn’t sure how much longer she could run from these things.
“Baxter’s! Audrey and Merlin always have protective spells around it! We should head there!”
“I think that… sounds like a really good idea.” Elsa grabbed Rose’s hand, and she ran, throwing up more ice barriers, creating a maze for the Orcs to try to follow them. And possibly die trying.
Rose glanced behind her and let out a ‘yelp’ before hurrying after Elsa. “It’s gonna be a long run, you think you’re up to it?” Rose didn’t trust transportation at the moment, but didn’t like the idea of staying out in the open either. Still, with Elsa by her side, she was sure they’d be able to make it in one piece!
