Magnus had not been the least bit surprised that the OC had thrown some weirdness at them so soon after he and Alec had moved back. He’d known that it would only be a matter of time before there was an invasion or something along those lines, but he hadn’t quite been expecting Orcs. Of course, they were fairly easy to take care of with his magic, but it had still been exhausting and he’d had to take a day, after the invasion ended to fully recuperate.
Now that he wasn’t completely exhausted, Magnus had left the Institute and headed over to the Magic Guild, deciding that it was probably a good idea to really start focusing on building it back up to where it had been when he’d left.
Freya really should have just stayed in Jordan. She could do both her work with the UN at Zaataari, as well as using her teleportation spell to get into Syria and look into some of the evidence she’d been given on war crimes taking place. But the schedule had been set and she had dealt with two days of fighting orcs and making their heads explode. Only in Orange County.
But now she had decided that she should go and make sure that the latest round of Orange County nonsense hadn’t disrupted the wards she had put up, the reinforcements with Amycus. She might not often go there (she had the attic sanctified) but she could appreciate it. Plus the different books, and the items that shouldn’t get out.
Since getting back to Orange County Magnus had noted a number of magic users, on the Network, who had not been around before he’d left so he had yet to meet them, including the woman who walked into the Guild not long after he had, “I don’t mean to bother you, but I don’t believe we’ve met.” Magnus was fascinated by the various magic users and the magic lore or their dream worlds, “I’m Magnus Bane.” He extended his hand to her, his yellow cat’s eyes on unglamoured.
Freya admittedly hadn’t been expecting anyone there though she supposed that was part of the appeal of the Guild. People could go and practice when they wanted. Still, she could roll with it and just nodded as she took the extended hand and shook it briefly.
“Freya Mikaelson.”
While she did take notice of the unglamored eyes, she made no comment or indication of a reaction. Between werewolves and vampires in her dreams, cat eyes weren’t the strangest thing she’d seen.
“It’s nice to meet you, Freya. Are your parents fans of Norse mythology?” He smirked as he shook Freya’s hand. Unlike when his eyes had first changed, Magnus rarely covered up their true appearance any longer. Unlike when he was modeling, there was no real reason to make them look normal since most people simply assumed his warlock mark was achieved via contacts.
“Likewise. As for my parents?” Freya shrugged. He was clearly a Dreamer if he knew of this place and his eyes, so why not go with the truth - at least from the Dreams. “More like daughter of a Viking warrior.” Who turned into a murderous, hateful man after she’d been kidnapped by her aunt and led to believe she was dead. It didn’t answer why she’d been named after a Norse goddess here but no matter.
“Impressive.” Magnus was always a little more intrigued when someone’s dreams took place in a completely different time period than the present. “Son of a Greater Demon, myself.” In the dreams Magnus didn’t like talking about his father for that very reason, but his wasn’t the Prince of Hell in the waking world so there really was no reason to be ashamed of it, “Have you been part of the Guild long?”
It was rather interesting the different things that people dreamt of. When it wasn’t invading Orange County, that is. And well….thousand year old viking witch, that was Freya. All that power and knowledge… it came in use in those situations. “Huh, interesting.” Demons weren’t so far fetched of an idea for Freya. Her brothers with the Original vampires after all.
“Not really, I helped reinforce the barriers back in February following a near apocalypse event,” Destroying a star hurtling towards Earth? Not easy. But it had been done, “But I usually stick more to myself than anything.”
Magnus knew some of the things he and Alec had missed out on thanks to details given to them by Isabelle while they had been away so he knew a little about the event that Freya was talking about, “Luckily I missed that event. My husband and I were in New York at that time.” Moving back to Orange County was something they had only decided on a few weeks earlier when Alec’s mother had expressed an interest in being closer to Isabelle once the divorce had been finalized.
“Lucky you.” The entire thing had been so stupid given the cause behind it. Someone keeping a potential Earth destroying object under their bed. It was one of the reasons Amycus had asked for her help in reinforcing the wards of this place. So that such items would be safe and not easily stolen.
“Quite a change going from here to New York and back again.” Though Freya knew all about change given the work she’d done before returning to Orange County. Because it was easy to tell by his words that Magnus had been here before going to New York.
“It definitely is. A lot quieter than it is here,” New York had its own craziness that went on, but for the most part it was normal craziness. “Which is also a little strange since my dreams take place in New York and it’s anything but normal in my dream world.” In a way New York in his dreams was almost like Orange County in the waking world.
Freya understood that. Even with her work in Jordan and travelling to Syria to do war crime investigation for ten days was calmer and quieter than coming back to Orange County. “Normal is overrated. Or something.”
Freya certainly didn’t know what normal was at any rate. Not anymore.
“Or it’s lost all meaning. Your pick.”
“I mean, who wants normal?” Magnus smirked at Freya, “Normal is boring. Then again, there are times when I wish it was a little more boring here.” It wasn’t so much because Magnus was worried about himself during invasions like the one that had just happened, but he worried about Alec, Izzy and Simon fighting these creatures that were bigger than them. Magnus could easily use magic to subdue invaders from farther away, but Alec and Isabelle had to get a little closer.
“I mean, a little room to breathe would be nice.” Not feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders. But Freya well knew the benefits of magic and not needing to be so close to the orcs to fight back while others might need to be closer and thus were in more danger. “Though at this point, I wouldn’t know what to do with boredom or free time.” As if she had ever been good at dealing with such things before she had returned to Orange County and joined the ranks of the dreamers. Hell, even as a child she’d always been involved in numerous activities.
“I felt that way at first, when we left,” It was strange, at first, not having to worry about invasions and dreams and all of that and for a little while Magnus hadn’t been sure what to do, but then he’d suggested they do a little traveling before going back to New York so they had spent a few weeks doing just that. After all, being able to portal basically anywhere they wanted really saved on airfare. “My husband and I did a little traveling to try and stave off the boredom for a little while.”
Freya nodded some, “I travel for work so I know how that can be. Yet, here you are again after getting away.” Seemed there really was something about this place. Freya did have to wonder how many people left after dealing with all the Dreams and everything that came from them only to come back. Freya was coming up on a year in a few months and the longest she’d been anywhere since graduation was a year and a half. So it would be interesting to see how well she handled that after being so used to always moving to a different country.
“Here I am again,” Magnus nodded, smiling. “It was bound to happen eventually.” He had been pulled to Orange County a few years earlier and now he was back and oddly enough it felt right. “I should probably let you get back to what you came here for.” He hadn’t intended to distract Freya, but Magnus was a naturally friendly person and enjoyed talking to other people, especially when those people were magic users or dreamers.
“So I’ve heard.” It never made much sense to Freya but that didn’t really matter. She’d figure it out eventually. What she knew was that despite the stress the dreams added, Freya liked the life she was making for herself in Orange County. And while Freya wasn’t necessarily the most friendly of people, it was easy enough to fall into conversation and be polite. Still, there were things that she needed to get done and she nodded. “Well, it was nice meeting you, Magnus. I’m sure we’ll see each other around” Orange County was like that after all.
