Who: Jaina & Rose
What: First meeting over drinks
When: Friday night (Pre Easter)
Where: The Inferno
Rating: Low
Status: Complete!
Friday nights were the best and worst part about working in a bar. You were always running around, filling orders, seating people or pouring drinks; it definitely made the time fly by! But the worst part of it was you usually got the more rowdy bunch, the ones who had a long Monday through Friday and needed to blow off some steam. Most of the time Rose could handle them and laugh them off, but there were a few times extra security was needed.
Tonight was turning into one of those nights where Rose kept shooting glances at the bartender to help her out. When her break finally arrived, she happily plunked herself down on the corner barstool and raised her hand for a pint. That was the best benefit to working at a bar: you could have a drink when needed.
“Cheers mate.” Rose saluted the bartender with a grin, taking a long draught of her beer. At least Neena was back in the business; Rose had a bit of fun while the boss lady was out and away, but she was more determined to make sure everything was running smoothly for her. At least she had tomorrow night off. That was a blessing in itself.
It was the first time since the whole embarrassing love thing that Jaina had come to the Inferno. She’d hoped to apologize to Neena in person, but if she was here she was avoiding her or just busy. Sighing, she took a seat on a stool and rubbed her face with both of her hands.
Rose glanced over as she sat down and grinned. “Sounds like you need one of these,” she said, lifting her glass. She glanced at the bartender and nodded her head towards the girl. Soon another pint was set down in front of her and Rose smiled wider. “Cheers mate! To letting go to whatever may be upsettin’ ya!”
“Yeah, I really would like to let it go,” Jaina said. “Thanks.” She picked up her drink and raised it in a toast to Rose. “To life being a little less annoying.”
After knocking it back, she eyed the woman, and said, “I’m Jaina.”
Rose grinned as Jaina added the little bit to the toast and took a drink as well. She glanced over as she introduced herself and grinned, nodding her head in greeting. “Nice to meet ya Jaina! I’m Rose. Work here actually, but just on break. It’s been a day.” She rolled her eyes to emphasize it hadn’t been going so well.
“So whatcha havin’ a hard time letting go of?” It may not have been the most polite thing to ask a complete stranger, but that was also the benefit of it. Rose got a lot of confessions at the bar, but it was probably because it was like a sanctuary. She certainly wasn’t gonna tell anyone and sometimes you just had to vent things out!
“Everything,” Jaina commented. Her right-wing father, her issues in her dreams, her awkwardness with Neena. Right now, mostly the latter. She grimaced. “Do you remember when everything went embarrassing for a lot of people on Valentine’s Day?”
Whenever someone said ‘everything’, it usually meant more than what Rose could pick up on. She began to wonder if this girl had dreams like most of this area, but then she went on to mention the Valentine’s shenanigans; so she did dream. At least Rose seemed to think that the weird situations that seemed to plague to OC also correlated to what people were dreaming about. Not always, but there could be a strong argument for it.
She nodded her head to the question, happy nothing had occurred to her for it. “The random falling in love for a day? Yeah, I remember it. Or more, remember hearing about it. It affected you?”
“I fell in love with the owner of this bar.” Jaina’s tone was dry and sarcastic and she wanted to sink into the ground. “It was horrible. I sent her pictures.”
That was enough to make Rose pause in taking a sip of her drink to glance and really look at the girl sitting next to her. She was attractive enough (from what Rose could pick up on) and she wondered how Neena had taken to it. She couldn’t help but grin, but she tried to hide it, not wanting to make the girl think she was teasing her.
“Neena?” she verified, her smile now showing through as she took another drink. “I’m sure it didn’t phase her. I mean, those kinds of things you can’t help, right?”
“It was so embarrassing. And she already has a boyfriend, I think. Oh god he probably saw it too.” Jaina lowered her head to the bar and groaned. “I’m just a scientist, magic isn’t supposed to exist, so of course I get mind controlled on valentine’s day and then turn into a mage.”
Rose frowned, not really understanding why the poor girl was so upset. Maybe she was new? Strange things happened in the OC and it was a hazard if you chose to make a home here. “C’mon, I wouldn’t worry about it too much! Everyone knows weird things happen and we all should have been waiting for something for Valentine’s.” She put a hand on the girls shoulder and gave it a squeeze.
“And what’s a mage?”
“The week I arrived here, the sun disappeared.” Jaina turned to look at Rose, giving her a hard stare. “The sun disappeared. I’m a physicist!”
Clearly, she was never going to let that go. But she shook her head and held out her hand. Light formed in her palm, blue in shade with strange symbols that spun around the light. “I cast spells.”
Rose opened her mouth to say something about her profession, but promptly closed it when she witnessed what she could do. Her eyebrows shot up, visibly impressed. There were strange things that happened around this area, so much that she couldn’t really argue or freak out over someone being able to conjure light that way.
“That’s pretty cool,” she said, downing the last of her drink. “Is that something that came from the dreams?” She only assumed, since the dreams seemed to link supernatural activity.
“Yes, and lots of hard work and study in my dreams. While I have a natural aptitude, raw power is worthless if you don’t know how to direct it.” Jaina closed her fist. “I can’t wait to be able to teleport.”
“Teleport, really?” That was a concept that Rose could get behind. “Is that what you’re learning in your dreams right now?” It seemed there were a lot of people Rose knew who got cool powers from their dreams. So far she only had a key to the coolest spaceship in the universe, but no spaceship to go with it. She had tried it with Clara’s TARDIS, but it didn’t work.
“So you’re kind of getting magic lessons through your dreams?”
“I’m well past that point in my dreams, but it’s not quite keeping up in my waking life.” Jaina frowned. “It’s really frustrating. I know the spells, but the power isn’t there.”
Rose gave her an understanding smile, hearing the frustration in her tone. “Hopefully it won’t be too much longer!” she said. “Do you usually get dreams very often? Or they tend to take their time?” Rose’s dreams seemed to take their sweet time; at the rate she was going, she was averaging a dream a month! She wasn’t sure where they were going, but she was at a point where she wouldn’t mind dreaming a bit more.
“I feel like mine are going very slow. They were fast at first. Years in a night, but the last few have been… weeks of dreams for a single day.”
Rose hadn’t really thought about the time of her dreams...how could she? Traveling through time and space made it hard to keep track. Still, she wondered how much time had passed from dream to dream.
“Kind of like they were trying to give you a summary before and now they’re more specific?” Rose tapped the counter to the bartender, asking for another drink for herself and her friend.
“Maybe. Or maybe these events are more.. personal for me? Just studying and hearing about a war far away, but now there’s a lot going on and I’m a big part of it,” Jaina explained.
Rose thought it over for a moment and nodded her head. “Yeah, I think that makes a bit of sense. Makes it kind of fun though, yeah? You’re the star!’ Which made sense for a dream, but Rose just wanted to cheer the girl up. When their drinks arrived, Rose actually just downed hers and stood up. “Well, back to the grindstone,” she said with a grin. “But I wouldn’t worry too much about Neena or anything like that. Weird things happen here all the time!” She walked over and held her hand out. “I’m Rose. Work here most nights if you ever wanna come in and chat again!”
