When: April 1st, after the bar
Where: All over the OC
Rating: Low
Status: Complete!
Well, not only was it Easter, but it was also April Fool’s; it was too good a formula for the OC not to do anything. When Rose had gotten the text from Neena about the bar, she didn’t think it would be her first venture into the strangeness that was this area of California. The screams of the Peeps were still ringing in her ears when she flopped down on her couch, a little scorched and still surprised by the outcome of the Inferno. She had been hesitant to leave Neena, but she wasn’t the type to be coddled over the loss of something. Rose had shuffled back home with the thought of a long nap, hopefully one that she could wake up from and everything would be back to normal.
But once she was home, she found the adrenaline was still pumping through her and she pulled her phone out, looking at the various contacts. She couldn’t help but grin as she scrolled back to Clara’s name and clicked on it, sending a quick text.
>> Hey
>> You saw the peep invasion?
>> Have you heard them??
>> Up for some fun?
Whenever there was an Orange County thing, Clara headed to her TARDIS in case she was needed for something. So far the latest thing wasn’t too dangerous. Well no, there had been the living Monty Python skit she’d found herself involved in but overall? Nothing too bad. You know, just so long as you didn’t happen to have the eggs the vorpal rabbits came from. No matter, this was one of the reasons Clara had stopped teaching, so she’d have more time to do this sort of thing.
There had been a lull though and she had been making some tea when her mobile alerted her to new messages.
>>I have
>>So weird
>>Well when you ask in such a way
>>Is there any other answer beyond yes?
Rose couldn’t help but let out a woop and stand back up, rushing into her room to pull on some clean clothes. As soon as she was ready, she gave Clara a quick text back (I’m on my way!) and grabbed a taxi to head to Clara’s diner.
It was amazing to watch as the taxi driver drove over the peeps that were flapping around on the road, the screams seeming not to bother him. Rose couldn’t help but cringe as she heard the high pitch screech and wondered if the driver just didn’t care or if he couldn’t see/hear them.
After paying the driver, she practically skipped over to Clara’s door, careful not to step on any of the colorful creatures along the way. She knocked on the door, turning to watch the Peeps as they continued to flap around, as if this was a normal occurrence. “They’re actually kinda cute,” Rose muttered, tilting her head to think how well of a pet they’d make and if/how long they would stay alive for.
Clara had made sure the TARDIS was in the right spot once she had gotten Rose’s text about heading over. After all, it wouldn’t do to have it missing because she’d been investigating the Peeps and vorpal rabbits. Still, there had been a lull of sorts and so she wasn’t too worried even though she’d been in the back when the blonde had shown up.
Hearing the knock and door open, Clara came from the control room that was assumed to be a kitchen and grinned.
“In a creepy way, yeah. Poor Cap is so confused.” The video Bucky had sent her had been far too adorable with the peeps jumping on the poor dog.
“Who’s Cap?” Rose didn’t miss a beat having been caught talking to herself. It was natural for her to just strike up a conversation with Clara, no introduction or formal hellos needed, especially in a situation like they were in.
“You know, I never actually realized that your diner was your TARDIS! I mean, makes sense...spoilers and all.” She turned and gave Clara the biggest grin; she was beyond excited to be past that point, knowing that they would have their own adventures here in California. “You’ve seen what’s been going on out here? I heard there’re killer bunnies too...but I haven’t run into those.” Rose thought that killer bunnies might have been a bit of a stretch, but you never knew around here. She didn’t want to think of something so cute and fluffy having the ability to kill someone.
She stepped inside Clara’s TARDIS, glancing behind her only once to look at the Peeps bouncing around outside. “I wonder if you could make a pet outta them,” she mentioned, before her attention turned back to the inside. “So how do you keep it as a diner feel? Just a kind of hologram?”
“Bucky’s service dog.” Well, being trained but he still was a service dog even if they were still training him. Going through her mobile, Clara pulled up the video of the golden retriever known as Cap with the peeps on him and handed it to Rose so she could see the video for herself. Still, who needed conversation starters? Just go straight into it.
“Part of the fun, really.” As for the question on seeing what was going on out there? “Yeah, I was investigating and helping where I could before I got your texts.” Since that was basically her default response to these sorts of situations. Live in Orange County long enough and it just became second nature. Especially given the fact she did have a TARDIS.
“As for that, broken Chameleon Circuit.” Because of course.
Rose tilted her head to look at the video and grinned. “Aw, he’s so cute!” She watched as the peeps jumped all over a very confused looking puppy dog. “Poor guy, seems like he made some new friends! Did you end up keeping any?” She handed the phone back to Clara, her energy showing as she bounced on the balls of her feet.
“So you’ve already been out and about, helping those that needed it?” she asked, a twinkle of mischief in her eyes. “Why don’t we have some fun then? I’d rather like one of those Peep things to try and keep as a pet!” She thought about it for a moment. “Do you think they’ll last?”
“Not sure if Bucky decided to keep the peeps or just chase them off.” After all, she’d been busy with investigating. Only reason she had the video was texting said boyfriend to stay away from peeps and eggs and then wanting to get video of the peeps on Cap once she was told there had been an incident. Still, she was amused by Rose’s energy and it was contagious.
“That I have been. Sort of a default mode really.” Travel with the Doctor, and investigating the strange things really did end up becoming second nature.
“Hard to say. Some things that happen here last, others not so much…. Doesn’t hurt to try though!”
Rose could only beam at Clara, excited to go on her first non dream trip in a TARDIS. She bounced after Clara, watching as she flipped switches and pumped gears. “So the Doctor showed you what to do? How to drive?” Rose slumped just a little, leaning against the console, arms folded. “He hasn’t shown me.” Soon her face lit up again as she glanced at her friend.
“Will you teach me?”
Looking over from her place at the control panels, Clara blinked then shrugged.
“Probably something to do with which version of him it was? Or maybe he will at a later point in your dreams.” It was hard to say really. After all, while Clara wasn’t sure about all of what Rose’s dreams would entail, she knew that she had also dealt with regeneration but hadn’t yet based on net posts, so she was clearly still more early on.
“But yeah, I can definitely teach you.”
She thought on it, realizing that Clara was right. Her dreams were so few and far between that it sometimes felt like she might be coming to the end of them. But there was still time...maybe it would be coming up in her next set of dreams. The thought was enough to bring the bounce back into her and she turned to watch what Clara was doing.
“Have I ever told you you’re the best?” she asked, a cheeky grin on her face. She bounced once more. “I wanna help. What can I do?”
“Probably! But I mean no matter how brilliant, the Doctor can also be an idiot. So….” So it wasn’t really much to get upset about, especially given the fact that again, Rose was probably still early on in her Dreams that there was a chance she’d be taught how to fly the TARDIS. “Alright, so, here’s what you do.” And into teaching.
Rose couldn’t help but laugh at Clara’s assessment of the Doctor. “It’s nice to hear he still stays the same in some aspects.” Rose grinned as she moved closer to her friend, trying to keep up and make mental notes of what she was being shown.
“So, where do you want to look first?” She glanced at Clara a few minutes later, one hand on a lever. “Somewhere out in the open. I don’t wanna be stuck inside a building with ‘em if they keep repopulating.” Rose gave a little shudder as she thought back to the bar.
“But it shouldn’t be too crazy outside, yeah?”
“Well, the face and personality may change, but the Doctor is still the Doctor.” Just as while each of her Echo selves was different, what made her who she was? That was in all of them. A souffle wasn’t a souffle, a souffle was the recipe. The same was true of the Doctor. It was all in the eyes.
“Yeah, that sounds a mess. I know there haven’t been any reports outside the county, so a park or beach may be the best option for open area.”
Because really, who wanted to be stuck inside we repopulating Peeps?
“....You are aware that’s the fastest way to make sure it is really crazy outside, right?”
Rose glanced at Clara and grinned. “Well, may as well, yeah? That’s why we decided to come out!” Rose laughed, thinking about the options Clara gave. “A beach sounds good! I mean, at least there’s water there so if it gets really crazy we can just dunk them in the waves and let them kind of melt, right?”
Shrugging, Clara leaned against the console. Figured she’d at least point it out. Every time someone made a post or comment about how things were quiet or anything along that line, things suddenly went crazy. So really, it only made sense that saying it wouldn’t be too crazy outside now, it was a guarantee that things would get crazy. Still, crazy was in her wheelhouse so it didn’t bother her.
“Beach it is. And yeah, melting them might be good idea if it gets too out of control.”
Rose clapped her hands together and let out a whoop. “Alright, what do you need me to do to help?” she asked, eyes gleaming as she glanced down at the console. “Can I try to land it??”
With a quick cursory scan, Clara told Rose what she could do to help and set the coordinates. She did laugh some then gave a shrug at Rose’s question about landing though, “Sure, why not.”
The landing wasn’t so bad, just a bit bumpy. The TARDIS bounced up and down a bit, the jolt making Rose give Clara an apologetic smile. “Well, at least the sand is somewhat soft,” Rose said with a grin. “And we’re inside so if we hit any Peeps we didn’t have to hear ‘em scream!”
She jumped from the console onto the floor, heading towards the door. “What color are you gonna pick out? I think I’d like a purple one!”
Well. It was Rose’s first time landing the TARDIS or any of that so she wasn’t too worried. Still, she did hold on just to be safe. As if she could actually die. That was a laugh. Even so, she gave a small smile to Rose and nodded. “Yeah. There is that.”
And besides the bumpy landing, there didn’t seem to be anything off.
“Hmm. Maybe a yellow one? Those are the traditional colors.” Honestly she didn’t really care what color. Clara was just interested in what they might come up with. Making sure that the TARDIS was in stealth mode so that no one came across it who shouldn't, she opened the door and yep. There were Peeps on the beach. Because of course there were.
Rose loved the way Clara blindly trusted her and was able to shake it off as the TARDIS came to a standstill. She peeked over Clara’s shoulder, hearing those familiar squeaks and she grinned. “Oh my gosh, when they’re so cute when they’re not screaming!” She gave Clara a small shake of her shoulders, propelling her forward.
“Do you think all the Peeps have that weird repopulation feature?” As if on cue, a pink one close to them made a strange squawk before it multiplied into four more. “Or maybe it’s just certain ones?” That would make them into pets a bit trickier.
For someone who was a neurotic control freak, she could at least go with the flow. Mostly. A bit easier now that she couldn’t die but that bit was irrelevant and only known to very few. So she just went along with it and knew that if she needed to, she could figure out how to fix the TARDIS though so far all seemed fine.
“Not screaming is always a good thing.” Screams could haunt dreams and who wanted that? Heading out, the brunette knelt down as a pink one showed up and...turned into four.
“I’m not sure….” And then a blue one hopped over and multiplied. With its multiplied versions then multiplying. That was happening a lot faster than she thought it would.
Rose gave a small shriek as she watched them multiple on cue and she had to watch her step as they spilled towards them. “Maybe beach wasn’t a great idea...the sand makes it harder to step around them!” She barely missed the sugary tail as she walked towards the water.
“Aw, there’s a yellow!” She pointed towards her left and scanned the area for a purple one for herself.
“Ooooh, c’mhere lil’ guy!” She hopped over a few other ones, making a leap for a purple one. She thought her clearing was good, but a blue one multiplied as she stepped down, two of them letting out their horrendous scream.
“Oh bloody hell!” She screwed up her face as she looked back at Clara.
Clara wasn’t faring much better. And oh god the screams. This was definitely not one of her better ideas. Not a bad one and in terms of what she usually went after? Not all that dangerous. Still. Not one of her better ones.
“Is it just me or are they multiplying faster than they were before?”
Specifically was it because of the proximity of the TARDIS?
“No, they’re definitely multiplying faster! Ahh, Clara!” As she was trying not to step on the Peeps, Rose hadn’t realized how much space she had allowed to get between her and Clara. With the Peeps multiplying even faster, Rose was almost to the oceans tide.
“Bloody hell, why did I think this was a good idea?” She muttered, knowing the only way to get back to her friend was to wade through the Peeps. She glanced over at Clara, hoping she might have another option.
“Well glad to know it’s not just me.”
And of course it wasn’t like the Sonic Sunglasses had a ‘stop Peeps from multiplying’ feature on it. It should have such a feature but that was neither here nor there. No. Instead they were just going to have to find a way to avoid the Peeps.
Thinking quick, Clara quickly got into the TARDIS and knocked a few Peeps out before going to fly the short distance to Rose, making sure not to land on the continuing to multiply Peeps and held her hand out.
“Grab my hand!” Sometimes a quick escape was necessary.
Seeing as they weren’t actually in any mortal danger, Rose couldn’t help but smile at Clara’s words. She sounded so much like the Doctor, looked like him with her arm extended out to help Rose. She glanced back at the Peeps invading the beach and almost grabbed for two to take with them. But the thought came of the Peeps overruning Clara’s TARDIS and she thought better of it.
Turning back to her friend, she gripped her wrist and pulled herself up and into the TARDIS.
“Cheers,” she said, the grin still on her face. “Blimey, I didn’t think it would get that outta hand so fast!” She scanned the beach, but there didn’t seem to be any other people on there. She watched as a few Peeps made their way to the ocean, only to be swept out to sea. Only a few shocked chirps could be heard and she turned away.
“And here’s thinking outside would have been better!”
Once Rose was inside, Clara looked at the beach and the swarms of Peeps and those heading into the ocean.
“It's probably like koi. In a pond or lake, they grow huge. In a fishbowl? They're goldfish.”
Shrugging, Clara grinned.
“Either way, now we know.”
Safely out of the Peeps way, Rose couldn’t help but laugh out loud at her friends thought process. “Wait, can we watch them and see if they grow?” She grinned, giving Clara a little elbow. “Thanks...for getting me.” Now that she looked back on it, she felt a bit sheepish for feeling worried at the separation from Clara. She put an arm through her’s and her smile only grew.
“Yeah, now we know and I know you’ve always got my back!”
