For most of the night, Hermione had tossed and turned. Weaved between her dreams about sitting on a space ship with Jim Kirk and watching old movies of Ginny's performances with Ron on her sofa were darker, more dangerous dreams, the memory of splinching Ron in the forest, the smell of blood, the sight of red all over her hands and on Ron's clothes. These were all normal dreams, though, just her mind going over all the things she'd been through lately, and trying to make subconscious sense of it all. That was incredibly difficult to do, though.
In the early morning, Hermione's tossing and turning turned into a dream. She finally laid completely still as her mind started to dissolve into another time, another place, and a memory started to fill in some blanks.
Hermione woke in the morning in her dormitory. Parvati and Lavender were nearby, opening Christmas presents. Christmas! Hermione was thrilled to tear into her boxes, finding sweets from Ron, a book from Harry, a scarf from Mrs. Weasley, some new study materials from her parents... then there was breakfast, spending time with her housemates in the Common Room briefly, and then preparations for the ball. Hermione felt like a princess in her dress, but she wanted her hair and make-up to match. It took a lot of effort and some special potion to make her hair straight and calm, and she put on the jewelry she'd borrowed from her Mum... then the beautiful dress... She really did feel like a princess.
And every good princess has a prince. Hermione met up with Viktor Krum, and the Champions led their dates in to start the Yule Ball. They danced, and laughed and danced... Hermione was pink in the face and incredibly happy... until Ron mentioned that she was "fraternizing with the enemy." Seeing Ron looking so grumpy, being so mean, really put a tail spin on Hermione's night.
The ball was over, and Hermione was back in the Common room. Suddenly, she was having a yelling match with Ron. He was complaining about Viktor, and she knew he was just jealous. Jealous! The prat. If he'd wanted to go with her, all he'd have had to do was ask! Ron seemed to think that Hermione was going to sit around and wait for him to come to her! She had a life! She was a confident, talented, smart, beautiful person, and if he thought she was going to wait around for him...
Hermione woke with a start, the yelling she was doing at Ron in her dream still fresh on her lips. She bolted up and looked wildly around the room, trying to figure out where she was and what was happening. It had been a dream, but it felt so real. As if it'd just happened. She was still so angry at Ron. She flopped back against her pillows, thinking about how he'd spoiled a perfectly beautiful evening. It was so like him. She reached over to the bedside table and grabbed her cell phone to send him a text message.
It was possible he was still asleep on her sofa. He'd been hanging around so much lately. It was comforting to have him around so much, but also confusing. And in her anger this morning, a little irritating. Didn't he have a home to go home to?
