Stefan was in the yard, on the wooden deck. It was cold out, but he wasn’t really affected by the cold anymore, was he? Not since his dietary restrictions changed. He was drinking, practically through a whole bottle of scotch, and sitting in one of the lounge chairs, looking up at the stars. Bubbles had been gone for a whole day and a half, and Stefan couldn’t stop thinking about her. Where was she now? Had the family packed and left yet? Were they really gone?
He’d tried so hard to keep his thoughts off of her, but they kept going back. Finally he just gave in and decided to wallow in it. Drink and wallow. That was his plan.
Lexi felt awful for Stefan. She knew exactly how he felt, considering she’d had her own long term relationship end rather abruptly a few years earlier. She knew how hard it had been to get over her relationship so she had no doubt that it would take Stefan some time to get over Bubbles. She also knew that what Stefan needed right now was his friends and since she was his best friend, she was going to be there for him no matter what.
“Hey, got some of that for me?” She asked as she sat down in the lawn chair beside Stefan’s and reached for the bottle of scotch.
Stefan had been watching the stars--it was a fairly clear night, and he could see a lot of stars--when Lexi came over and sat down in the chair next to his. He turned to glance over at her, and then passed the bottle without saying anything. He hadn’t been crying (he didn’t cry that much anymore) but he was down. Really down. So when she took the bottle, he turned to look at the sky again. Trying hard not to dwell now.
Lexi took a long sip from the bottle before handing it back to Stefan, light brown eyes watching him as he watched the stars, “How’re you doing?” She hated seeing Stefan hurting and she knew that as a vampire when your emotions weren’t in check it could have a negative effect on one’s control over the bloodlust. Stefan, especially, had to work harder to keep control over his bloodlust.
“Not quite drunk enough yet,” Stefan said, accepting the bottle back. He finally turned to look over at her, and gave her something of a smile. He wasn’t gonna go ripper. He had that much control. But his insides hurt; an ache he couldn’t seem to quell. It would get better over time, he knew, but for now? Lots of drinking. “I’m gonna be okay, Lex. Really.”
“Well if you keep drinking like that then it won’t be long before you are,” She couldn’t help but tease him a little. It was mostly in an attempt to keep things light so that Stefan wouldn’t dwell too much; not that she would blame him if he did. After all, Stefan and Bubbles had been dating for awhile and she knew all too well how awful it was when a long term relationship ended. “But how are you now?”
Her words made him smirk a little--the corner of his mouth turning up in an amused way. He nodded once. “That’s the plan.” Then he lifted the bottle again to gulp from it. “I’m… I’m in a lot of pain.” Honestly, if it was anyone other than Lexi, he would have tried to hide it. Stefan wasn’t the best at sharing his feelings with just anyone. If he was talking to Joe or Wash or Anna or Caroline or Tyler… he’d say he was okay. He’d probably laugh it off. Maybe. But Lexi was different. She was so close to him, he knew she could always tell when he lied.
Lexi and Stefan had been friends for so long now that lying to each other was practically impossible. They simply knew each other too well. “And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.” She said, taking the bottle from Stefan and taking a swig, “It’s gonna suck for a while and you’ll feel better in your own time.” She totally understood why Bubbles had had to leave and she didn’t hate her as she may have if she’d broken up with Stefan for another reason, but she still hated that Stefan was heartbroken.
Stefan nodded, letting her take the bottle from him. He’d probably had enough. Actually, he probably should go inside and sleep it off. But the cool, night air felt good. And he was a little drunk. Not moving felt like the best thing.
“...I don’t want to rip heads off, so that’s a good start.” He said, almost a joke.
“I don’t want you ripping heads off either,” Lexi was glad that Stefan had no plans to switch off his humanity or anything like that. It was a good sign that Stefan was going to get through this the human way, “And that’s a good sign. You know that, right?”
“I know.” Stefan turned to give her the small smile he could muster. “Thanks, Lexi.”
Lexi smiled and reached over to take Stefan’s hand and squeezed it, “Just remember that I am here for you always. You feel like you’re slipping or just need anything at all, I’m here for you.” Lexi had always been there for Stefan, but even more so now since she was one of the only people who would keep Stefan from going Ripper if worse came to worse.
