Celaena arrived at Rey’s garage in a good mood. Having just arrived back from a wonderful New Year’s holiday and looking forward to spending more time with her friends in the coming year. Speaking of which, she looked down at the overalls she’d bought specially for the occasion; changing oil. Knocking on the door, she poked her head around the corne to look for her friend. “Hellooooo,” she sing-songed into the room.
“Hello!” There was a banging sound as Rey came out from where she’d been hiding, and a hubcap rolled past Cel. “Good morning! How are you? You look good!”
She was enthusiastic, but then that was normal. Though she might have been playing it up a bit.
Watching the hub cap roll past her feet, Celaena looked up at Rey and pointed to the offending object. “Umm...did you need that?” she queried before coming in and hugging her friend. “Morning Rey! I’m doing good, thanks for asking! I came dressed and ready to work,” she pulled back from the hug and presented her outfit with a flourish of her hands. “At least, I think I did,” she gave a little laugh as she looked up at Rey. “How about you?”
“It’s not important,” she assured her, hugging back tightly. “I hope you’re ready to get messy! I already have a car jacked up.” She pointed at a rusty old sedan. “This is going to be a lot messier than that transmission was.”
“You sure? I can get it back if you want?” Celaena offered, thumbing over her shoulder. “I came ready to get down and dirty with you babe, so let’s do it!” she giggled, putting her hands on Rey’s hips and making her move them as she pretended to flirt with her. “Although first you may want to remind me what a transmission is,” she grinned cheekily.
“It’s fine, really!” Rey jerked her thumb back towards the car, though Cel did get a blush out of her. She wasn’t that oblivious and she’d nursed a low-key crush on Cel for awhile. “Well then, lets get all oiled up…” She grabbed Cel’s hand, explaining the transmission as she pulled her over to the car.
Laughing, Celaena let herself be dragged further into the garage by her friend. “Ooo, I love it when you talk dirty Rey,” she chuckled. She loved spending time with Rey. Despite how different they were to each other, in background and personality, they got on amazingly well and Celaena loved trying to learn Rey’s trade even though half the time she didn’t know what her friend was talking about. “Slow down, slow down, my brain isn’t built like your engineering whiz kid brain is,” she laughed.
“Some day Finn is going to hear that and it’ll blow his mind.”It would almost be worth the embarrassment, but she so loved teasing Finn. He made the best faces, and he was so warm and kind hearted that he didn’t really get mad. Rey definitely needed men who didn’t flip their shit in her life.
“Lucky for you, oil changes are easier!” She pointed at a wheeled cart, a pair of them. “First, we’re going to go down and I’ll show you where everything is, then I’ll show you how to position the pan and let out all the oil.”
Celaena threw her head back and chuckled at her friend. “Oh I can’t wait to meet Finn! Is he the type of guy that gets flustered at the tiniest amount of flirting?” she grinned. She watched her friend point and listened to her talk, smiling to herself as another flirty pun came to mind. “Oh I’m looking forward to going down with you,” her smile broadened and she lightly bumped Rey’s hip with her own. “Sorry, sorry, I’ll behave,” she held her hands up in mock defense as she chuckled. “Maybe,” she added quietly with a cheeky wink.
“He is. Not that I’m very good at flirting but I do a few things and he gets blushy and a little stammery.” Rey really enjoyed it. And she felt a great deal of affection for him. Whether or not that was love, she didn’t know. She was pretty sure, but she was completely new to this and didn’t want to actually mess it up. She actually couldn’t remember if she’d said “I love you” back or not.
“You know, if I was single, I’d be curious enough at this point,” Rey retorted, hoping to make Cel flustered.
“That goes for us both babe,” Celaena gave Rey an appreciative eyeing up before winking at her friend and tapping her bottom lip between her teeth. She liked playing with Rey, she was fun when she let herself go and didn’t take herself too seriously, but she was also pretty down to earth and straight talking which Celaena appreciated. “Boys are so funny when they get all flustered aren’t they,” she chuckled. “I love making Damian all hot under the collar and not quite knowing what to do with himself,” she recalled fondly. “How are things going with Finn anyway?”
Okay, that backfired and Rey nearly hit her head on the bumper as she got down to join Cel. While talking, she pointed out what Cel should do to start the oil change process.
“Uhm. Pretty well. He’s got a dog!”
That’s it Rey, deflect from how you feel.
Celaena giggled a little as she saw Rey nearly bump her head. Good to know she wasn’t losing her touch. “Wow, a dog, huh? That’s...cool, but I more meant how are the two of you doing? You and he ok?”
“We’re great.” Which wasn’t a lie, but Rey had been worrying about a few things lately. Like how she felt utterly incapable of sharing her deeper emotions. Anger, joy, happiness, they were easier to share. But going deeper than the surface made her uncomfortable. She was scared of the darkness hiding inside her, and she was scared of facing what it really meant to love someone.
Celaena looked at her expectantly, waiting for her friend to continue. When no further words came, she frowned in concern. “What’s wrong?” she asked gently, getting the feeling that Rey wasn’t telling her everything.
“We are,” Rey insisted. She stared up at the oil pan, knowing it didn’t sound great, yet unsure how to reassure her friend that things were actually okay.
“Except maybe… I’m worried I’m not good enough for him. I don’t know how to … emotion.I don’t like sharing my feelings. Yet I want to, but it scares me. The really deep ones.”
“Not good enough?!” Celaena sputtered nearly hitting her head on the underside of the car as she tried to sit up, outraged that her wonderful friend would think that about herself. “I don’t...what? Has he said something to you? Has anyone said anything to you? Because I will beat them for making you think that you’re not good enough. For anything!” she told her friend fiercely.
“Finn is really emotional. He feels things strongly and deeply, and he’s so kind and caring.” Rey slid out from under the car. “He never said or did anything! This is all me. I can’t even bring myself to tell him I love him!”
She wrapped an arm around herself. “It scares me.”
Celaena shut her mouth rapidly, realising she may have opened her big mouth and said the wrong thing again. Following Rey out from under the car, she sat up next to her. Hesitantly, she reached out to touch Rey’s shoulder. “Sorry, I uh...I got a bit carried away there,” she said quietly. “What is it that makes you scared babe? Do you think he won’t say it back? That he doesn’t feel the same way or something?” she asked. “Because it sounds like you two are crazy about each other.”
“No, I know he’d say it back.” Maybe he’d already said it, and she’d tuned it out. She was good at that.
“That’s what’s so terrifying. I’m not used to people being around me, caring about me. I’m used to having to go it alone and I don’t want to disappoint.”
Celaena gave a sad smile at her friend’s admission and shuffled to sit closer to her. “Well, I hate to break it to you babe, but you’ve got an awful lot of people who care a helluva lot about you,” she rested her head on Rey’s shoulder. “And we’re not going anywhere. Now, you told me that you love him, I’m sure that you can pluck up the courage to let him know as well. I mean, it would be a shame if I was the only one to know,” she teased gently.
“Maybe next week,” Rey suggested, though that probably wasn’t soon enough. Unless she did something silly.. “Or I could wait until Valentine’s Day?”
What was a month between friends? Or lovers?
Maybe she could make it special that way. Worth the wait.
