"What the hell?"
Who: Scotty, Gaila
What: Missile casing is delivered, some sciency talk happens, also establishes that mind bendy math talks happened with Chekov prior to this log, but it made muns brains break so...it happened off-stage!
When: sometime after Kirk told the delivery people to drop a missile casing off at Scotty's.
Where: Mad Monty's, which is now chock full o' buildy crap!
Rating: PG13, language and the usual with these two.
Status: Complete
Scotty was staring at a missile casing that was now taking up pretty much a fair chunk of space in only a two car repair shop, where there's a sub and a big computer crammed in there. "Computer?
"Yes, lover?"
"Make a note, lovey, that I need tae invest in a warehouse."
The computer beeped, "Searching for empty warehouses within your budget range."
"I can tell ye there arenae any, already." Scotty hopped up on top of the missile casing and gave it a looking over, kicking a boot here and there, and popping his head inside to make sure it wasn't armed. What? Sometimes it was better to look a gift horse in the mouth than find out later it had explosives lodged in its throat! He took a flashlight out and made absolutely sure that it was a hollow casing. "Aye, it's legit. Ye done with the anti-matter and matter scale, lass?"
The computer had a female voice, so it qualified as a lady as well, and was addressed accordingly. When he wasn't calling it 'lovey' or 'dear.'
Best. Computer. Ever. So thinks Scotty.
"I have found three within a hundred mile radius." The computer beeped again. The missile wasn't armed. Just a casing. It was pretty good condition too.
The computer beeped again, "I have printed out the information you requested."
"I might kiss ye!" It was a really nice casing, and would be a perfect nacelle, he mused to himself, quite pleased. Everything seemed to fall into place, other than the fact that the fuel was a mystery. But the day before he'd discussed plenty of possible alternatives with that Chekov kid, who was UTTERLY BRILLIANT. If they could combine brains, they could likely make it to Saturn and back again in no time, flat. "Did it match the initial equation that I had, that started this whole mess? Willing tae wager it did."
After all, he'd ran countless tests by now. And no boom!
"Yes, it matches precisely. I was able to ignore my locks."
Scotty ran over and...he couldn't hug it all, so he simply laid his arms out like he was hugging a wall and placed a kiss against one of her screens.
"Yer sae bloody brilliant, computer. Yer better than the time travelin' maybe from space doggie that was zapped over tae me, and I've nae idea what tae dae with even if he takes care of himself," gushed Scotty, lovingly, acting like Gaila got all the cool shit and all he could do was...make other cool shit.
Porthos looked up from where he was laying on the computer, then rested his head and yawned. He was a comfy puppy.
Gaila sauntered in, "What the hell?"
Truth be told, the dog was the most unoffending animal that Scotty had ever been around. He wasn't sure what it'd been through, but it was smart as hell and well trained, and the only complaint he had was it seemed to utterly hate Gaila, so he had to keep it in one place and her in another, more or less.
Meanwhile, Scotty had turned his head enough to peek over his shoulder back at Gaila, giving her his best utterly innocent expression. It worked on his mum sometimes? Maybe it'd work on his girlfriend?
"Computer was cold sae I was givin' it a hug tae warm the lass up?" he attempted a first stab at an excuse.
"I'm talking about the ICBM in your garage!" She pointed at the missile! POINT!
"Oh, right. The ballistics missile? Aye, that's just the casing. It's not goin' tae explode. Delivery people said that Kirk had found it and said it needed tae be delivered here." He stopped hugging the computer, glad that she wasn't saying 'hands off' or anything. He even grabbed a print out and sat down ON the missile casing, like it was the world's most demented bench, and his rear totally belonged there. "How was yer day at the pub?"
Gaila had felt the computer up quite often, herself. She was her baby, "Pretty good, actually. The interior is coming along well."
"Oh, well done. I hope ye didnae fuss it up tae much, though, but it seemed rather nice the way you shined it up last I peeked in." Which was the truth. He grinned at her and then wagged the paper around, like it was a major achievement! "They match! It's definitely anti-matter and matter mixed. Same output, even. It's brilliant. Ye want tae see?"
"Just some minor repainting," She eyedarted.
"YES!" She ran over!
He patted a hand down next to him up on the casing and grinned, even holding the paper out to her! Major success! The number crunching with the Russian kid had been a major help, really, even if it did delve into exotic matter for a blip, antimatter, and a whole lot of talk about number crunching and the sort of physics possibilities that could make brains bend into pretzel shapes.
"It's exciting!" he even added, before letting her hold the paper and see for herself.
She hopped onto the casing, and looked at the paper. She scanned over it with interest.
"Scaled up, how we were thinking it would, even with the tiny amount. Data was enough tae prove it was right, which is pretty brilliant, if I dinnae say sae meself," Scotty was saying with the utmost pride, even if the way he was saying it was so good naturedly put, it kind of balanced out his brain ego. "Just need tae figure out a consistent fuel, ye know, and then we have the mix ratio, sae it's possible. Um...I mean, with the right anti-matter reaction and consistent mix...nevermind that. It's possible!"
She looked at him blankly, "A lot of that was above my head, but I think I got the gist of it baby."
There was a huge grin on his face and he went \o/ for a moment, before hugging onto her and giving her a big kiss on the cheek. Someone? Is engineer-and-physics-geek excited.
Gaila laughed. She was ecstatic that he was happy!
"Couldnae have done it without you either, I'll have ye know," he very cheerfully said. "You were very, very helpful and managed tae listen tae me being very brain bendy and offer very good advice. If I can just figure out the fuel, or find people tae help more with that, practically need a chemist or a scientist, most likely, then ye know...we'd be all set. Then you and I, Moon. Which will be brilliant, if one was tae ask me. Which they havenae, but I'm saying it regardless."
She eyed him. She had the feeling he was just saying that to make her feel better, but she ran with it, "What about the anti-matter? Isn't that fuel?"
He stared back at her, still grinning. He wasn't saying that at all to make her feel better, but because she'd been there helping him figure things out a huge chunk of the time, and she wasn't stupid and understood a lot of what he was getting at, she was even good with the numbers and programs. Silly girl! Anyway, they'd already at least kind of talked it out when she came back after being a wee bit wankered from her talk with Uhura, the night before. And he'd explained the whole thing and still wondered why she hadn't told him but...that was a conversation for another time. Which he thinks was sorted out. He'd only had the Russian lad over for brain bendy science for one brief afternoon, and Gaila had been around the whole time! So there.
"Well, aye, it is, but...we need something tae...ye know, make it. Smashing won't work, ye see. It's not producing enough, and it's not a consistent flow, tae keep the mix active. But it IS what's in there, proved that now, it's got the ratio right there," and Scotty leaned in, craning his neck a little, and pointing to the page. "There. See? There's got tae be some element or mix of elements for the chambers, when it has magnetic charge and some coolant ran through, tae channel through enough power tae turn it intae what we'd need. Problem is, ye know, finding it? Heh. I've yet tae get tae that part, but we've got the rest! It's over there, where I'd drawn the plans." He pointed at the complete engine outlines. As in, the whole kit and kaboodle, nacelles and everything, engine outlines.
It was irrational, she told him. She knew it. But hey, she was feeling better about it, so that's good! She tilted her head, thinking hard, "Computer, what sort of elements would allow us to channel this sort of element?" The computer beeped in error, and she scowled, "Maybe if we suggest things. Metals?" EEEEN. "A liquid?" EEEEN. "Crystal structures?"
"Affirmative."
He knows she thinks it was irrational, and maybe if he keeps reiterating that she was important to the whole thing, she'll stop being all 'maybe he's trying to make me feel better' yeah? Yeah! And he was very glad she was feeling better about it because, dammit, he was happy and wanted her to be happy too. It was a major triumph for them both, after all!
Okay, well...oh, he could kiss both her and the computer, right now.
"Oh reeeeally! I think she likes you better, lass. She didnae give me anything, but I was feeding in gases tryin' tae see if anything would click when it was charged, and I got nothin'."
"So we need crystals. Maybe industrial diamonds?" She was trying to puzzle this out. The computer was unresponsive.
"Nae, hardest substance but it's still only a carbon, even if a byproduct." He raised one hand and rested an index finger against his chin, brows knit together, staring off at nothing in particular but looking very focused, like he was mulling over possibilities. "Maybe something we dinnae know yet, that can be crystallized, such as a liquid or maybe even vapors from a gas that could be collected and somehow solidified. Or something that turns crystal, under extreme pressure...."
Unfortunately, he wasn't a geologist, and didn't know much about crystals or their properties or even how they managed to fabricate them in labs. So any thoughts he had were sheer speculation.
"I don't know, but we're closer than we were five minutes ago." Gaila swung her legs, kicking at the missile as she sat there.
He didn't seem bothered at all by her kicking the missile, and even nodded along with the rhythm of it, before saying in a low mumbling voice, "This' goin' tae be the new thing that drives me aff the bloody deep end, innae it?"
"You mean you aren't already off the deep end?"
He shot a look over at her and fake laughed, silently, before rolling his eyes and elbow nudging her arm.
"Aye, I'm insane already. Ye got me. I've been found out. Oh nae. Whatever will I dae."
"Fuck me on the rocket?"
Well he was about to go on, and continue being sarcastic, but instead that stopped him enough to stare at her and smile.
"Are ye serious? What if we fall aff?"
She grinned at him, "Isn't that the point?"
"Well it's not like ye need tae twist both arms aff and hit me with them. I mean, it is an occassion tae celebrate." He grinned back at her and gave her a thumbs up and a nod, like that was a big fat yes!
In answer, she pushed him onto his back!
#winning!
