Stefan was really glad that Caroline had agreed to a night out. It gave him an excuse to get out, and to drag Anna out with him. The poor girl had been a bit of a mess since Wash had gone all “weird.”
In any case, both of them needed a distraction. So when Caroline agreed to a karaoke night, Stefan shoved Anna in his car, and they drove to the bar to meet up with her. Anna was already going through songs she might sing, listing them aloud as she numbered them on her fingers. It lightened Stefan’s mood to see her bright and bubbly again, considering all the worry she’d put in for Wash.
“I guess you’re going first?” Stefan said, as they came through the front doors of the bar. His vampire eyes were searching the room for his blonde friend.
A night out was just what Caroline needed. It wasn’t just a good distraction for Stefan, but for herself as well. She needed a night off from worrying about her mom. If that was even possible. At least be distracted for a little bit.
Caroline arrived at the bar in a red and black rose print dress, her hair down in its usual waves. The blonde was always punctual and ended up getting there a few minutes before Stefan and his roommate. By the time they walked in she had already gotten them a table. Spotting Stefan she waved him and the redhead he was with over.
Stefan spotted Caroline and gave her a nod and smile, then turned to Anna. “She’s over here,” He said, and took hold of her elbow to guide her. It was a little noisy in the club, so he didn’t want to lose her in the shuffle of people and dim lights. He was looking forward to this. A night out with good friends.
Anna couldn’t wait. She had so many ideas about songs they could sing--would it be duets? Or three-ways?? They could do all kinds of things! And she’d heard so much about Caroline from Stefan and Lexi, she felt like they were already best friends! So when Stefan spotted his friend, Anna’s eyes searched for her, too, landing on the girl with the blonde waves. She was so pretty! Anna bounced over and gave her a bright smile, introducing herself before Stefan had the chance to say anything. “Hi! I’m Anna! It’s so good to meet you!”
“Hi, Anna!” Caroline replied greeting the redhead with her bright smile before getting up and giving both her and Stefan a hug for a proper greeting. Anna certainly seemed to have a lot of energy. She was surprised Stefan could keep up. Well, to be fair he hadn’t really kept up. She had rushed off before Stefan had a chance to introduce them after all. “So,” she said once she was seated again. “How often does Stefan karaoke?”
Stefan was obviously amused by Anna’s enthusiasm, and Caroline’s reciprocation of said enthusiasm. He chuckled, moving up to hug Caroline in return. It was really nice to see two of his best friends meeting and getting along so well. He slipped onto a stool at their table.
“Not as often as I’d like!” Anna replied happily. Hey, she had a co-conspirator now. So she thought, anyway. Anna felt like she’d heard so much about Caroline that she already knew the other. “I dunno, every couple of months or so?” Anna asked, then joined Stefan at the table.
“Sounds about right.” Stefan raised a hand to flag down one of the waitresses. “More now you’re here, I imagine,” he added, giving Caroline a grin.
Stefan was probably right about that. Caroline had a feeling she wouldn’t be able to get enough of seeing her friend sing. Especially since it was never something she thought he would do. And Caroline? She had been a few times back in New York, she did like to sing. She had a feeling Anna felt the same way.
“I think you’re right,” Caroline replied before turning her attention back to Anna. “Now, what should we make him sing?”
Anna laughed this time, brightening considerably. “Something adventurous! He usually sings really safe and easy things. Like New York New York.” She made a face. That song was so lame!
Stefan just shook his head. He was gonna need a lot of alcohol for this, he could tell already. Especially since his tolerance was so high... The waitress came over, and Stefan said hello. He leaned in, his eyes dilated, and he compelled the woman to keep the shots coming. Maybe he’d ask for a botte later.
Caroline ordered herself a vodka soda. She wasn’t surprised Stefan was asking for multiple shots. Caroline had a feeling that was the only way he was going to sing. “Sinatra? Really?” Caroline questioned both Anna and Stefan. “What about Bon Jovi? No Bed of Roses?” she raised a brow at Stefan before turning her attention back to Anna. “You and Lexi really let him get away with that?”
The singing and the sadness over Bubbles moving out were definitely reasons that Stefan wanted those shots to keep coming. He glanced over at Caroline with something of a smirk. “What? It’s easy.” Sinatra wasn’t too bad… was he?
“Yes! Well, it’s better than not singing at all, anyway.” Anna said. “He and Lexi sang Blaze of Glory once, and oh.my.god I thought I was gonna die. It was amazing!” She was beaming as she turned to the waitress and asked for a rum and coke. Then she asked for the song list from the karaoke machine.
The Waitress brought the list back right away, then went off to get their drinks from the bartender.
“Well not Sinatra tonight,” Caroline commented looking over the list with Anna. “I think you should do ‘Livin’ on a Prayer,’” she told him before looking at the list for herself. She had been known to sing on occasion. “What about you, Anna?” she asked as the waitress came back with their drinks. “What do you like to sing?”
Anna leaned in a little to look at the list. “Oh, you know, anything with lots of soul to it.” She grinned up at Caroline. “Like Katy Perry or Taylor Swift or something!”
Stefan burst into laughter. “Yes. Lots of soul like Katy Perry.”
Anna reached over and thwapped him in the shoulder. “It’s better than Frank Sinatra!” She turned her attention to Caroline again. “What do you like to sing?”
Caroline couldn’t help but laugh along with Stefan. She definitely wouldn’t describe either Katy Perry or Taylor Swift having lots of soul. But they were definitely good for karaoke. Lots of fun songs to choose from. She could totally sing some Katy Perry at karaoke. However, it wasn’t what she usually went for. “I like songs from the 80s. Pat Benatar, The Bangles, that sort of thing. Although Katy Perry definitely has some awesome songs for karaoke. California Gurls? Hell yes.”
“See?” Anna said, beaming. “Caroline agrees with me!” Then she pointed to a song on the page. “What do you think about Madonna?” She asked, watching Caroline instead of giving Stefan the time of day.
Stefan was incredibly thankful for his friends. This was quite the welcome distraction. He was even smiling and laughing--laughing--as the waitress came back over with their drinks. He gave her a gentle, “thanks,” and then lifted his glassp for a sip. He’d drink, and then sing whatever song they chose for him to sing.
Caroline took a sip of her drink when it was brought over before answering Anna’s question. “Oh totally. I could go for Material Girl or Like a Prayer.” If she wanted to be mean she’d suggest Like a Virgin for Stefan but tonight was about cheering him up. Not embarrassing him. “If we keep with the 80s theme you should totally sing a Bon Jovi song, Stefan. Or maybe some Michael Jackson?” Though she had a feeling Stefan might butcher that.
Stefan couldn’t hit all the notes in a Michael Jackson song. But that was easy, wasn’t it? It was something that the whole bar knew, and no one would really hate him for butchering. Actually, they might join him and sing along. Take some of the pressure off. “Maybe Billie Jean.” He mused, then gulped again from the glass.
“I think this is turning into a plan!” Anna clapped her hands twice before reaching for her glass. “An 80’s theme sounds perfect!”
“Billie Jean it is,” she commented with a smirk. “What about you, Anna? Did you want to sing Material Girl together?” she questioned with another sip of her drink. Stefan though. He was on his own. Because Caroline had to hear him sing for himself. By himself.
“Yes!” Anna brightened. “I think that’s an excellent song to sing together! And maybe later… Love is a Battlefield?” There was Pat Benatar on the Karaoke list, wasn’t there?
Stefan lifted his glass to sip again. Gulp. He could handle it, and the more he drank the more human he felt. He didn’t mind letting the girls decide the songs. Maybe next time he’d have to drag Joe or Tyler along. Someone to help balance things out, and save him from being forced into something crazy.
“Perfect,” Caroline waved the waitress over to put their names and songs in for karaoke. She and Anna would go first. Give Stefan a bit of time to adjust, and get drunk enough to sing. It wasn’t long before their names were called. Caroline finished off the rest of her drink before heading to the stage with Anna.
Caroline really got into the song, dancing along as she sang with Anna. A smile clear across her face when it was over.
Anna got really into it, too, dancing alongside Caroline. They both had beautiful voices, and the crowd was really into it by the end of the music. When the song wrapped, Anna was grinning brightly at her friend, then bowed to the thunderous applause that burst out in the bar. She led the way off stage laughing as another name was called.
Stefan took the opportunity while the humans were away from the table to drink a lot more. The waitress brought the bottle, and it was almost half empty. But Stefan was enjoying himself. He was feeling warm and fuzzy, possibly a little tipsy. He was clapping loud and hard, and giving wolf whistles at the girls as they came back to the table.
Caroline did a little bow for Stefan when they returned to the table. That as until she saw the half empty bottle of alcohol. She wouldn’t judge too harshly right now. She knew he was going through a break up. But still she did whisper to Anna, “Does he always drink like this?”
Her attention was back on Stefan as she slid back into your seat. “Good luck topping that,” she teased motioning for another drink for herself since she had finished before it was time to go on stage.
Anna glanced at the bottle at Caroline’s question and gave a little shake of her head. And then a shrug of her shoulders. “I… no. Not really. But I wouldn’t worry about it too much… he knows his limits.” She wasn’t sure if Caroline knew that Stefan was a vampire, but it wasn’t her cat to let out of the bag.
“Oh, no, I wouldn’t even dream of trying,” Stefan said with a laugh. His eyes were twinkling now, a happy, drunk twinkle. “I’m going to absolutely pale in comparison.” He lifted his glass in a toast, then gulped it down.
They didn’t have long to wait, because the young, skinny guy who’d been called up onto the stage, ran off in a fit of stage fright. The announcer called Stefan’s name, and Stefan stood to head up onstage. The music started and he took the mic to sing.
Of course Caroline was worried about it. That was an excessive amount of alcohol. But she’d keep it to herself for now. Enjoy the evening of karaoke.
Caroline watched as Stefan made his way to the stage. She beamed as he began to sing. He wasn’t </i>horrible</i> but he wasn’t exactly good either. Still she cheered for him all the same, impressed that he actually had the balls to do it. “I think I’m in shock,” she joked to Anna.
Anna laughed. “He’s doing really good! I mean, better than New York New York, anyway.” She lifted her hands to cup around her mouth and gave a loud cheer for Stefan on the stage.
Stefan laughed into the mic, lost his place in the lyrics, and had to find it again. It was embarrassing, but hey. The girls were smiling at him, he was a little tipsy (maybe a lot tipsy?) and the night was young. The song was over pretty quick, though definitely not quick enough for his liking, and he came back over to the table. A couple heads on a couple of pretty ladies turned when he walked by. Stefan was oblivious.
Stefan may have been oblivious but Caroline certainly wasn’t. Normally she would say something, push Stefan to hit on one of the girls looking his way. However, with his breakup so fresh she figured it probably wasn’t a good idea.
“Wow,” Caroline commented as he returned. “I had no idea you had that in you.”
Definitely not a good idea. Stefan wasn't ready to even think about girls. Any girls. Except for Caroline and Anna. But they weren't really girls. They were his friends. Two of his best friends. He poured himself a little more alcohol into the glass and lifted it. "Don't get used to it," he said, cheerfully, playfully, then tipped the glass back.
Anna laughed. "Let's pick another song!" She cheered, then turned her attention to the list again.
