Yang had been worried about the idea of asking to move back in with her sister. After the rejection she’d felt over the whole apartment thing she felt just a little like she was unwanted. Which was stupid and obviously not true, but sometimes those head weasels were really hard to shut up. There were reasons for that, but as much as Yang liked to say she was dealing okay, she wasn’t always dealing okay.
But she didn’t want to look for roommates (if they weren’t her team mates anyway), so the option was… move back in.
She hopped off her bike and let herself in, carrying a dozen donuts, Ruby’s favorite smoothie, and a bag filled with Chinese food. “Hey, anyone home?”
Ruby had been in her room, buried in a project for a class. There was an unofficial competition between the transfer jerk from the year before and she was determined to beat him - again. The stupid Rita Skeeter article had him all feeling justified that she wasn’t as talented or knew what she was doing and it was because she was doing things (whatever those things were, Ruby didn’t know and was pretty sure she didn’t want to) and so she was going to prove him wrong. Again.
Of course, it was slow going. And there was was grease on her forehead from where she’d wiped at it, a bandana holding her hair back. But she’d just reached a good place to take a break when she heard her sister’s voice. (A good thing as she probably would have kept working through otherwise).
“Yang!” And out of the workroom which had been set up and to the kitchen, smiling brightly as Zwei raced in, excited at the company. “Ohhh, food and smoothie! Best sister ever!” And hugging her sister, completely forgetting she was currently in grease monkey mode from working.
“That’s me!” Yang still wanted to beat the snot out of Rita, but she was learning to control her temper (had learned, but things like her sister tended to set her back a little).
That was the farthest thing from her mind though, and she smiled broadly as Ruby and Zwei came racing. She wrapped her arms around her adorable little sister and hugged her tight before setting her back down. “Looks like you’re working on something. For class?”
For the most part, Ruby was doing her best to ignore Rita. There was the initial panic and wanting to hide away to keep others from getting pulled in because of her, but she had kept going on and since it had only been the one story? Had mostly forgotten about her except when the guy in her class brought it up to undermine her.
Once on the ground though, Ruby nodded as Zwei just sat between the two looking up and between them periodically - following the conversation.
“Yep. I didn’t know what time you were coming over otherwise I wouldn’t have been working at this moment but it’s okay. I needed the break anyway.” Sister imposed breaks were good things given Ruby could get lost in the work if left to her own devices.
Yang’s smile turned into a cocky smirk. She leaned down a bit to let Zwei slobber all over her hand as she tried to blindly pet him without looking away from her sister. “Then I arrived just in time. You’d probably lose your own head if you didn’t need it to work.”
Ruby rolled her eyes at the comment of losing her head if she didn’t need it to work. Honestly she wasn’t that bad and didn’t leave things behind. She just got caught up in her work and would lose track of time. Difference! So instead she just took the food and smoothie from her sister to get the food set up with plates as she sipped the smoothie.
“Yeah yeah yeah.”
“How’s dad doing?” Yang asked, trying to remember where the plates were even kept. She found them, luckily, feeling the craziest sense of relief. More things had stayed the same than had changed, even with the dreams. But she wanted to wait until they were settled before bringing anything up.
“He seems to be doing okay.” At least as far as Ruby could tell. There had been the apparent panic about her seeing not!Summer and everything with Uncle Qrow but that had resolved itself once Dr. Simmons had come to help and she and her dad had talked it out. As she had told Jaune, she didn’t know if Taiyang had actually started dreaming yet or not, though t was only a matter of them.
Food set up for putting on plates, Ruby waited until Yang had gotten them before making up her plate and heading to the table.
She worried sometimes about their dad. In both places he’d kind of gone through a period that had meant that Yang had done a lot of the heavy lifting, though she’d be the first to say it hadn’t been as bad in the OC as in the dreams.
Either way, it made her really protective of Ruby. A conflicting feeling with her sudden desire to bury herself under a rock, “That’s good. Cuz I uhm… I actually don’t know how to bring this up…but I might need to move back in. If you’re okay with that, that is.”
There was always going to be concern for their dad Ruby figured. She knew one of the things she most worried about was him losing Raven and Summer all over again. It was one of the main reasons she hadn’t wanted to mention not!Summer to him, because of who it was. But he seemed to be doing okay, no signs of him shutting down again so she went with it.
Of course she hadn’t been expecting what Yang was going to say either.
“Really? Of course I’m okay with it!” And if there was one thing that could be said for Ruby, it was that she didn’t lie. Bury and suppress? Sure. But she was quite fine with the idea of Yang moving back in and it was evident in her face and voice. “I mean if it’s what you want. I’m sure dad will be on board with it too!” Since it wasn’t like Ruby actually got final say on it or anything.
But honestly, why wouldn’t she be okay with Yang moving back in?
“I want it,” Yang said, seeming to brighten up almost immediately. “I really miss you guys, and like...the apartment is really lonely and I don’t want roommates that aren’t like...you or Blake, or Weiss, or JNPR. So like … yeah!” She all but squeezed Ruby to death a gigantic hug.
Nodding some, Ruby was about to reply since she did get it even if she’d had her own reasons for not wanting to move in November just as Blake had her own reasons for not wanting to move in when she was suddenly being hugged to death and she would have flailed if not for said hug. “Can’t...breathe….”
Breathing was for chumps, so Yang hugged her just a little bit longer, then put her down. “Sorry. I’m just so excited! I can’t even explain why cuz I don’t entirely know, you know? It’s just.. Feelings.”
Breathing was also important for staying alive. But Ruby was used to it and so she just smiled and nodded at Yang’s comment. She definitely knew how that was, feeling things she didn’t exactly understand or know why she felt it. Just that she did.
“Yeah, I know. Feelings are weird.”
“So. Wanna eat and then I can kick your butt at Mario Kart?” Yang asked, eyes flashing.
“Oh, it is on!”
