Lately, Elsa got the feeling like she was being followed, especially when she came into work. And after some of the latest gossip, she knew she wasn’t the only one. It made her a little paranoid, but like she’d told Lena, she could probably take care of any cameras. She sounded more confident than she actually felt, but walking into Future Industries was sometimes a dangerous proposition.
But she was supposed to pick up Ruby for lunch, and she looked around for suspicious people with cameras.
Ruby was…. Well, she didn’t really know. Trying to take Yang’s advice and just continue on with her life, be herself, and not let concerns about gossip magazines get to her. But she did still worry that she’d end up dragging her friends into this mess when they had enough to worry about. The trick was not isolating herself to protect them as that seemed to be the wrong answer.
For now though, it was one of the days she was at Future Industries and not school and the teen had been finishing up a project when she noticed the time. One more adjustment and...done! Grinning, Ruby grabbed her stuff and headed to the lobby to head out when she noticed Elsa. She recognized her from the network.
“Hi, can I help you?”
Elsa smiled at her. For some reason she reminded her heavily of her sister. That wasn’t a bad thing. At least she could handle her sister. In small doses.
“I was wondering if I could steal you for a little lunch,” Elsa said. “.. I probably should have messaged you first.”
Now, with everything that was going on and the whole socially awkward thing, the logical response would be to try and bow out. After all, what if Elsa was part of the woman’s plans for getting pictures? Just because she recognized her from the network wouldn’t mean that wasn’t possible. But that wasn’t Ruby’s nature. For all of her social anxiety and stumbling over words, she believed the best in people and was genuinely friendly if awkward.
“Sure. And it’s fine, I was just confused. Which...well, it’s not that hard to do.”
This was painfully awkward, but Elsa was still remembering how to People, herself, and it was a learning experience. She tucked some hair behind her ear. “What kind of food do you like?”
Definitely painfully awkward. But Ruby tended to not notice it as much. Was she confused? Yes. But she was just rolling with it because of the whole seeing the best in people thing. “Um, I like most anything really. And I’m always up for trying something new. You?” Because again, she had no idea why Elsa had decided to have lunch with her, so she was just going to follow her lead for now.
“I lived in London for seven years. If there’s a city in the world that’s varied in cuisine, it will be that one. Does curry sound good?” While Elsa was getting better at the whole touching people thing, that was reserved for family and close friends, so she maintained a polite distance between her and Ruby.
Still, she looked around, trying to spot anyone who might have a camera.
“Sure! Curry sounds good!” It wasn’t something Ruby had actually had before, but it sounded like it would be good. At any rate, she was more than happy to try it. “What was it like? Living in London, I mean.” And just like that, her attention was drawn as her curiosity was piqued. She’d never left Orange County after all, so living abroad? It sounded really exciting.
“Can you handle spices?” Elsa led the way to her waiting taxi, but smiled at the question. “I enjoyed it. There were all kinds of people and things to see, besides all the landmarks. Once I let myself, anyway. I had a friendly room mate that helped.”
“Yep, I’m good to go with spices!” Following after Elsa, Ruby listened as she answered the question and nodded some. To what? Who really knew, it wasn’t like she was being asked anything but she could see how it would be really enjoyable because of the landmarks and things to see. “That’s awesome.”
Elsa thought she heard some clicking, and turned her head, “Really?”
She waved her finger, and the paparazzi's camera lens frosted over, the film ruined by frost. The she got into the cab. “Is there any food you really like?”
Blinking as Elsa turned her attention and seemed agitated, Ruby followed her gaze and sighed. Right. Them. Though she was rather confused by the finger waving. Note to self, ask about that later. Instead she got into cab and shrugged.
“I really like Japchae, but honestly I can’t think of much food I don’t like. I really like chocolate cookies and hot chocolate though.” Even if hot chocolate really only did well in the area in December and sometimes when it was cooler out.
“Chocolate?” Elsa asked, raising her eyebrows and looking at Ruby like she was now Elsa’s favorite person, ever. “I still have a stash of chocolate I brought with me from London, it’s… amazing, especially compared to stuff in America. I’ll share some sometime.”
“Ohmigod, really?! That would be so awesome if you would share. I mean obviously you don’t have to because it’s your chocolate, but I’ve heard so much about how chocolate is different there than here and well...anywhere because each country has their own chocolate making processes but I’ve always been curious!”
If there was one thing that could universally bond people (usually), it was chocolate.
“I want to,” Elsa assured her. “And it really is different. I think maybe it’s the ingredients? And how it’s prepared. I never really bothered to check but it’s just… so good.”
Ruby’s grin brightened as Elsa assured her that she wanted to share the chocolate. Because really. The chance to try chocolate from London?
That was just way too exciting to pass up. Instead though she managed to focus on the conversation at hand. “It probably is, or even just recipe.
Some countries use more sugar, or things like that. There are a lot of ways it can be different. Like how people who have been to New York say the bagels are different even on the borough you’re in because of the water that is used.”
Even if she was a mechanical engineer (in training and schooling), Ruby had heard that about bagels and pizza in New York and understood the principle of the argument.
“Maybe all that corn syrup changes things too.” Elsa couldn’t see how it wouldn’t. It was simple chemistry, and while her expertise was geometry and structural things, she still had to have chemistry training too.
“We should pick up something at the store and do a proper comparison!”
“Most likely.” It made sense. And then there was talk of comparisons and Ruby perked up, “Oh definitely! I also have Korean and Chinese snacks and chocolates we can add to the list for comparing as well!” After all, might as well go all out with what they had available to them.
“I think you’re my new best friend,” Elsa joked. It sounded like a chocolate friend date, which was something that was definitely up her alley. “I’m free tomorrow if you want? It would give me time to hit up a couple of shops.”
Ruby thought nothing of the comment and just grinned brightly. “I have classes in the morning but will be done by afternoon if that works for you!”
“I’ll be off early, so that works perfectly.”
Elsa paused, thinking she saw someone, and frowned. She twirled her finger in the air, and a gust of frigid air knocked someone into a bush, making him drop his camera. “Can’t even have lunch in peace.”
Okay, Ruby definitely saw that this time and her eyes widened.
“You can do magic?” Because clearly that was the more pressing thing than the fact that there were apparently photographers following them. Oh, that thought would soon come up and bother her. But right now? Ruby was more interested in the magic.
“Uhm, yes. I’m sorry.” Elsa looked a little sheepish. “I dreamed I was born with the power of ice and snow.” She looked around, then created a little miniature ice statue of Ruby. It wasn’t her best work, but she was still getting the hang of it. “I’m better in my dreams.”
“Why would you apologize?” But then Elsa was creating a miniature ice statue, and Ruby’s eyes widened in awe, “That is so cool! We fight Grimm in mine and train and fight with weapons and dust, like ice dust, but I haven’t heard anything really about magic.” Okay. Besides her eyes. But that was something Ruby didn’t really want to think about because of what it tied back to and so she was mostly just trying to ignore the Silver Eyed Warrior thing.
“Not everyone reacts well to the whole magic thing.” She offered the mini-ruby to Ruby. “It won’t melt. At least as long as I’m alive, I guess.” She didn’t know what would happen if she died, and chose not to think about it. “I made this huge, beautiful palace in my dreams.”
Ruby nodded some. She supposed that made sense. It could be a lot to take in when people weren’t used to it. Ruby just happened to be one of those people who saw the best in people and so someone able to use magic? That was just amazing to her. But she took the miniature-her and nodded.
Usually a good thing not to think about dying, Ruby was a fan of that. “Ohhhh, was that the drawing you posted about? Because it was gorgeous.”
“It was, thank you. It inspired some of my work for L-Corp. But we probably shouldn’t talk about that.” She winked. “I hope I can recreate it for real.
Maybe when I dream more, it feels like my powers are stronger the longer I dream.”
And now knowing her sister was safe? Was a huge weight off of her chest.
Part of her wanted to adopt Ruby.
“Oh. Right. Because of the photographers.” Ruby’s mood darkened briefly because really…. It was frustrating and even if she was doing her best not to let them stop her from living her life, she was still worried about inadvertently getting her friends involved and wanting to avoid that. But the conversation moved on and so did Ruby. “That would be really cool. And I think that makes sense. I feel more confident in my fighting the more I’ve dreamt. I mean, I train here as well but I notice that some things are coming more easily in terms of reflexes and the like.”
“I meant, competition,” Elsa clarified, but honestly it wasn’t that far of a leap so she could agree with that. “Don’t worry about those guys. I’ve been freezing their lenses and ruining their film every time I see one. I also looked online and there are other ways that are kind of rude, but if you flick them off they can’t use the photos.”
She got the door for Ruby, which would probably make tongues wag, “You must be really skilled by now.”
It probably spoke to Ruby’s general nature and seeing the best in people and all that she didn’t even consider the competition between the two companies. While she had flailed when Lena had wanted her to join L-Corp even though she was already at Future Industries, she hadn’t known what to do. But that was over and everything was fine, so competition between the two? Something the teen hadn’t even thought of.
“That’s neat that you can do that. But I guess there’s that as well.” Though Ruby couldn’t really imagine herself flicking anyone off. Either way, she stepped inside and nodded. “My entire team is. But there’s always more that can be learned. I’ve been working to incorporate my speed into my fighting more as I usually used it before to get out of situations.” She wouldn’t be too slow again. If she had used her speed correctly, then maybe….
But no time to worry about that right now. There was curry to be had!
Elsa thought about that for a moment, as she took a seat. “I could see how that would be useful in a fight. Appear behind someone, or use it to close the distance. If you were fast enough, you could look like you were in two places at once, which I’m sure would give you a brief advantage.”
Ruby nodded, “I don’t know if I can look like I’m in two places at once. When I use my semblance, or speed, I turn into a burst of rose petals.” The weeks following the Grimm invasion of Orange County, it sometimes felt like she’d been choking on the rose petals but she never had mentioned it because there was too much going on and that had at least stopped. The headaches hadn’t but she could deal with those. “But it also helps with momentum as well.”
“That sounds like it’s very pretty,” Elsa decided. Like her own snowflakes, but red and… rosey. “And suiting to your name.”
Ruby gave a small shrug, “I guess? I wouldn’t know since I’m in the midst of them. But it does seem fitting, doesn’t it?”
Elsa smiled, leaning her hand on her chin. “I think it’s just perfect.”
Blushing some, Ruby quickly ducked her head. She always did get flustered easily given she usually just wanted to do her own thing and not really be seen as anything special. Silver Eyes that made no sense and meant things she didn’t want to acknowledge made that difficult. So instead it was suddenly being very interested in the menu to see the different kinds of curry that were available.
“Order whatever you want, I’ll pay,” Elsa suggested, hoping to change the subject and defluster the poor girl, as cute as it was. “You can cover it next time.”
They could both probably stand to get out more anyway.
Ruby nodded some. “Sounds like a plan!” Well at least she hadn’t made a complete fool of herself if Elsa was talking about them getting lunch again. It was always nice to make friends, even when she sometimes failed at reading social cues and being content to bury herself in work. She was at least getting better at the socializing thing.
