There was a lot that had been going on. Okay, there was always a lot going on for Freya. It was basically her default setting. Still, between the normal upheaval at work because of the administration and global events, then her mother’s attempts at setting her up on a date under the guise of a business dinner, to moving into a new house, and then Dahlia showing up and knowing that Elijah and Klaus had done something as she’d been sent to Finn’s the day before, all on top of Klaus transitioning, finding out she couldn’t die, then being there for Finn after his Dream about Henrick dying and being turned into a vampire….. It was a lot to deal with in a month’s time.
But right now? Right now there some form of quiet. And so she had invited Evie over to see the new house now that she was apparently allowed back after whatever Klaus had wanted to keep her away from. Okay, so it had been gotten through compulsion but it was still a new place. Much more space and there was an attic which Freya had converted and sanctified in order to do magic. The glass coffin turned bookcase of sorts was to one side, filled with books and supplies. Then the set up of different candles, a table with more supplies. Basically it had more space and was better set for use of magic which would undoubtedly be useful in this place.
“So, how have you been lately?”
The new house was nice, and made Evie wonder about getting a bigger place, perhaps something with a yard, for her dog. But Eden had seemed to take to apartment life easily enough. Of course, Evie made certain to take her for long walks and jogs at least twice a day. Having a dog was a responsibility, but Evie liked the companionship. But it was also nice to get human companionship sometimes as well, and she liked spending time with Freya.
“I’ve been doing well. Work is crazy, but that’s how it always is.” Though perhaps it was a little more crazy these days thanks to certain people in power being morons, but counter-terrorism was never a dull area. “Eden’s settling into her new home. She really likes the snow, so I’m afraid of what she’ll think when this snow goes away.”
It would go away, right?
“How about you? Your new house is really nice, though probably an adjustment?” She asked as she looked over the attic, obviously set up for Freya’s magic. Evie didn’t touch anything, knowing better than to touch things she didn’t know anything about.
“That sounds about right with work. Another day ending in ‘y’ and all. But that’s good that Eden is adjusting.”
Freya was all too familiar with how hectic work could be. Thanks to the Supreme Court, once again there was concern with an idiotic ‘travel’ ban - which had major impacts on her work with refugees. Then there was helping Vincent with his own magic and family drama and Dahlia and well… hectic was just the way of life. Still, it was always important to get a break now and then and do something that was just relaxing. Besides, who didn’t want to show off a new house?
Admittedly the means of getting it were less than legal, but that was irrelevant. There really hadn’t been room for Klaus’ sudden art collection or Freya’s growing magic collection.
“All things considered? Yeah. I’m good. And it is a bit of an adjustment, but it was also necessary.” Dream gifts could be quite cumbersome after all.
“Pretty much. As much as I prefer to be working, Eden is a good reason to not constantly be in the office.” It also allowed Evie more time to work on her plan regarding Niger. She was more than thankful for her Eagle Vision as an Assassin. It allowed her to write in an ink that only she could see. So all her notes and plans regarding her extracurricular activities would never be found by her superiors.
“I’m glad to hear you’re doing well, considering. Though I understand the need for a bigger place. With all the articles of clothing and weapons I get from my dreams, I’m going to need a couple more closets at this rate.” Plus it would be nice to have an actual yard for Eden. “Though I see you’ve made the attic rather cozy. It must be nice to have an area to work your magic in?” Evie said with a smile, again taking the look of the attic in.
To be honest, the attic looked like something that Charles Dickens would find intriguing. After all, he had that whole Ghost Club thing. And Evie had helped in figuring out some mysteries in connection with it.
“Shockingly enough, sometimes it’s a good thing not to always be at the office. Blasphemy, I know. Still, that’s good that Eden gives you a reason to not constantly be there.” There were always things that superiors at work didn’t need to know. Like Freya’s abilities and what she might do if she felt it necessary. Perhaps that was a dangerous way of thinking, but no matter.
“Klaus suddenly has a rather impressive art collection which made the move necessary.” Trying to get around the apartment had been interesting to say the least while trying to maneuver around the sudden art appearance. “But that makes sense. The dreams certainly don’t account for space.”
And why would they? They didn’t account for much really. Even so, Freya did smile some. “It is. While I can do my magic anywhere, having a sanctified space is important.” With that, she flicked her wrist and made feathers start to float and dance around Evie. It was a simple spell, as if nothing more than a blink of the eye in comparison to what she could do in the Dreams and even with what she’d done here without the centuries of practice. But why not show off a little when it wasn’t some life and death situation like fighting the Grimm.
“Blasphemy indeed,” Evie said with a little laugh. “Still even workaholics like you and me need to get out of the office and see what the rest of the world holds. And, you know, spend time with friends.” Evie teased a bit. She always did enjoy spending time with Freya.
“Is this house going to be big enough for his art collection? Or does he have other plans for it?” Evie was curious about it, after all. Everyone seemed to get dream gifts in some respect. Some were just larger than others and took up far more space.
When Freya made feathers float and dance around her, Evie couldn’t help but to smile as she watched them. It was awe-inspiring, and she’d always had a liking of the occult. She believed in ghosts, and she found magic to be fascinating to her. Magic didn’t exist in her dream world outside of the Pieces of Eden, but those weren’t even really magic. They were just objects with powers attached to them. “That’s amazing. Are you able to do any kind of spells you want or are you only able to use certain ones?”
“This is very true. And spending time with friends is always important, no matter how busy our schedules may become.” Because it was. Freya would probably go mad if she didn’t have that break from work and her family. Oh she would always love her siblings, but god did she sometimes need a break from all the Mikaelson family drama. She’d drop everything in a second for them, but breaks were still important.
“Hopefully? But I know he also plans to put some of it up in the gallery he’s opening.” At least the artwork would be appreciated. Both by Klaus as he would always seem to have that affinity for art no matter the world, and also the public at large.
As for what sort of magic she could do? Letting the feathers return to place, the blonde shrugged.
“It depends on the spell, really. If it’s an extremely powerful one, I need to ground myself with a great source of power,” such as an Original vampire or hybrid, “too much magic or too powerful a spell can put a strain on the body otherwise.” Not like that would stop Freya if she needed to save one of her siblings and she had no other choice but to go such a spell alone of course.
“But for the most part, I haven’t really been limited to any sort of magic. Not in the Dreams. Here I’m still learning, obviously.” A few months versus centuries would do that after all.
“Exactly. All of us need that break now and then regardless of anything else.” Taking a break was essential to recharge and regain proper focus. There was such a thing as being overworked, after all. Even if sometimes Evie wouldn’t admit that it did.
Evie listened as Freya explained about her magic. It was something she wanted to understand a bit better. After all, if there was something that she could ever do to help Freya when it came to magic, she would do it if asked. Better to go into with some sort of understanding of how Freya’s magic worked.
“That’s actually pretty cool, and no doubt comes in handy at times now that you know how to control it better than when you first got your magic here.” Of course, such things could be said about any abilities people received from their dreams that they didn’t have here. She moved a little closer to Freya. “Do you have to cast spells from a sanctified place, or can you do them anywhere? Assuming you have the grounding you need for certain spells, of course.” Okay so she was really curious and hoped that Freya didn’t mind the questions.
And then she started to feel the need to kiss Freya that seemed to come out of nowhere, but she tried to ignore it.
“Precisely.” Because no matter what Freya said, she knew she needed to take breaks as well. It was why she sometimes would go stay with Elijah or Finn on her own volition. Or why she would meet up for drinks with people. Or yoga. Or just hanging out with Evie. She knew that she needed to recharge from all the work she did on her different projects.
As for minding the questions? Not at all. It was nice to be able to talk to someone about all of this who wasn’t her siblings. They didn’t quite understand as they had turned into vampires instead. Yes they had grown up with Esther who had been a witch but with all the complicated feelings there…. There was also Vincent. But it was a part of her.
“I can do spells anywhere, it’s just better when I have a place that is sanctified, especially for the more powerful ones.” After all, she’d been able to fight off Grimm in an unsanctified place, could travel as needed.
Evie wasn’t the only one feeling the sudden need to kiss though. It wasn’t that Evie wasn’t attractive. She was. But between all of Freya’s Dahlia related trauma which had been heightened since the woman had shown up, knowing that Evie had been struggling to get over her last relationship and just life in general, let alone the fact Evie looked like Hayley… well, Freya hadn’t put thought into anything other than friendship with the other woman and wasn’t exactly looking to ruin what they had.
Of course, she hadn’t realized just how close Evie had gotten to her so when she looked up, it was as if their faces were inches apart and eyes locked. Freya could definitely feel a sort of energy between them and subconsciously licked her lips that suddenly felt very dry, completely oblivious to the mistletoe that was right above them.
Evie couldn’t claim that she’d ever completely understand magic since she herself didn’t have the ability to use it. But that would never keep her from learning about Freya’s magic and what she could do with it. All power came with responsibility, but even with that Evie wondered just how limitless Freya’s magic could be. She would no doubt have plenty of other questions as time went on as well.
But whatever other questions were on the tip of her tongue got lost as she realized just how close she and Freya were. Now, Evie wasn’t blind. She had noticed that Freya was attractive, but after what had happened with Yang and in her dreams, Evie had willingly shut off any thoughts of relationships. Freya being attractive hadn’t gone any deeper than a realization she’d had, then pushed it aside and focused on their friendship.
Yet when Freya licked her lips, Evie wanted to throw caution to the wind, something she very rarely did, and take a leap. For once, she didn’t try to think or over-analyze the moment. She instead just felt and lived in the moment. She closed the remaining distance between them and kissed Freya.
Sometimes caution did need to be thrown to the wind. Like right now when there was persistent mistletoe overhead. Still, the second she felt Evie’s lips touch hers? Well, any vestiges of holding out on that urge were gone and Freya returned the kiss passionately. The need was still there and her fingers seemed to hold onto the loopholes of Evie’s pants to bring her closer to her.
No thinking. No fretting. Just doing. Sometimes that was needed as well.
There was passion behind her own kiss, and for once she was happy to simply act first instead of think first. Except once the moment would pass, Evie would undoubtedly be horrified to some extent. Horrified on her own part, not anything regarding Freya. Evie still had emotional issues, in part thanks to her dreams, and in part due to how her previous relationship had ended.
Her hands rested on the blonde’s shoulders, and Evie wasn’t wanting to pull back. At least until she felt that driving need to kiss Freya dissipate. She didn’t stop the kiss immediately, it was one of those somewhat slow revelations that something was happening that was odd. Finally, Evie did break the kiss and it started to dawn on her that she’d kissed Freya.
Why would she kiss Freya? Freya was her friend, she didn’t just go around kissing her friends like that. Evie blinked, then something caught her eye and she glanced up. Was that mistletoe? Had that been there before? Now some confusion set in and she looked back at Freya and she was starting to panic internally. She didn’t even really have words at the moment, but stepped back from Freya. She really tried to find words, but she was finding it difficult to do so with the rising panic over what had just happened.
That was when she’d caught sight of the window. An escape route. Sure, she could’ve just run back down the stairs and out the door like a relatively normal person, but Evie wasn’t a normal person. She was emotionally stupid and panicking. So of course the window seemed like a very good exit strategy.
And like very mature, rational adult that Evie prided herself in being, she ran for that window and crashed through it, ignoring the cuts from the shards of glass as she spread her arms out to the side and did a swan dive. The Leap of Faith. But as she was going to hit the ground, Evie rolled out of it, came up on her feet unharmed and booked it out of there.
It took a moment for Freya to realize what was happening. She’d been caught up in the kiss and it was only as it went on that she began to piece that something was strange. Like...why they were kissing in the first place. It was really only after Evie broke the kiss that it all really started to come to her. The strangeness of the situation. What it meant. Any of it.
She knew that Evie had her issues with relationships. Freya had her own issues. Especially right now with the ever looming presence of Dahlia in the back of her mind. But did it have to be a bad thing? Did she want it not to be?
Well… Freya didn’t want it to ruin their friendship, no matter what the good or bad of it was. Still she noticed the mistletoe and while trying to make sense of everything Evie was…. Suddenly out the window, leaving Freya to stand in the middle of attic, hand on hip as she ran her fingers through her hair with her other hand. Yeah, that hurt more than it probably should have.
“What the hell just happened…?”
