So far, their holiday was going well. It was nice to get away from Orange County for a little while, though Cosima hoped her dreams didn’t turn dramatic or anything while they were here. It would just ruin the entire holiday. She’d packed appropriate clothing, both for weather and the Bat Mitzvah. Cosima had taken the advice both Jemma and Kitty had given her to heart in that respect.
But today was a day reserved for something completely different. Jemma had gotten them a tour of the BBSRC, which Cosima had been stoked for. The place lived up to her expectations, and Cosima’s science geek was coming out hardcore the entire time. But she was also a little nervous because, well, she planned to propose here. She had the ring in her pocket.
“How did Stark ever lure you away from here?” Cosima asked, glancing at Jemma. She wasn’t completely sure where she was going to propose, but she wasn’t as nervous knowing that Jemma had already basically said yes when they’d discussed the subject previously.
As soon as Jemma had known that they would be going to England, the biochemist had reached out to her previous boss at the BBSRC to see if they were still there, and if so, if she could get a tour for Cosima. It honestly had been one of the first things she had done. It was an hour train ride from London, so it wasn’t like it was even out of the way between the Bat Mitzvah and just regular tourist-y things that were planned. If they were going to go on holiday, they would do it right.
Of course, Jemma also had no idea what Cosima had planned. They had discussed the possibility of marriage in their future, their plans for the future in general and how it did work out. But actual proposals and the like? That wasn’t really something really on Jemma’s radar at the moment. Admittedly it had been a bit hectic even getting to England with concern that the trip would be cut short. But it wasn’t and things were going just as planned.
“Well… I admit I was a bit bored. I’d been here for a few years and wanted a change and new challenge. So when I got the offer, I decided to take it. New thrilling adventure and all.”
Still, in the two plus years Jemma had been away, there was a new building with labs and so the tour was as much of interest for her as it was for Cosima who had never been there.
Cosima chuckled a bit. “I can see that. Not bad working for Stark Industries. He does have a lot of amazing things happening there.” Not that Cosima had ever been to Stark Industries in Orange County, she was just operating off of what she knew from both the Marvel movies and comics in regards to Tony Stark. “To be honest, I’d probably have gone to work for him too, if I’d been given the opportunity.”
She grinned, then went back to taking in the BBSRC. It would’ve been amazing to have been able to work here. As it was, Cosima was happy with her position at the Agency. Working with advanced technology and analyzing samples of the various things that invaded Orange County was work that she loved digging into. Especially with her specific area of biology.
“He does and to be in R&D for a company like that? Well… it was quite the honour to be offered a job there.” Of course for Jemma, she hadn’t realized that she would end up having a dreamscape where Tony Stark was such a prominent figure, as an Avenger nonetheless. Yet that was exactly what had happened. The dreams were like that, though. “I wouldn’t blame you for that. It would have been fun to poach you from Stark just as I was.”
There seemed to be a slight rivalry of sorts with the Agency and Stark. Mostly in that they liked to take his people and the whole Avengers thing for those who shared that dreamspace.
“Either way, it all worked out.” Despite the constant trauma from the dreams.
Cosima chuckled. “That would have been amusing if the Agency recruited me from him as well. One would think he’d be more than a little miffed to lose you to the Agency.” She smiled, walking beside Jemma.
“But you’re right, it all worked out. Besides, I think both of us are perfectly happy where we are.” Cosima slipped a hand into her pocket, her fingers wrapping around the ring she had in there. She glanced at Jemma, readying herself for an actual proposal. “So I take it that there are some changes here from when you worked here?” She would wait just another minute or two longer before making her proposal.
“Oh, he’s jokingly called me a traitor for leaving.” It had been awhile since she’d seen Mr. Stark now that she thought about it. Though they were both busy and whenever she went to use his labs for verifying tests he seemed to be busy or out and he hadn’t tried to break into the Agency recently as far as she was aware.
Jemma of course was completely unaware that Cosima had brought a ring with her or what she was planning to do. Instead, she just leaned on the railing of the overwalk they were standing on, watching the workers down below.
“I like to think we are. But yes, there’s the new building we were shown. That wasn’t there when I left. Different projects, workers. The world of science never sleeps after all.”
Cosima laughed a bit. That sounded like Tony from what she’d seen in those movies and read in comics. “At least he’s got a sense of humor about it.” Cosima did like the work they did at the Agency. Researching the various artifacts and life forms that invaded Orange County were things she enjoyed doing very much.
Plus, it allowed her and Jemma more time together by working together. And she enjoyed working alongside her girlfriend.
Speaking of which, she looked at Jemma as she leaned on the railing. And, well, she felt that this was the right time and place.
“Indeed it doesn’t, and I love being able to explore the mysteries of science with you. But I’d also like to explore the mysteries of life in general with you.” Cosima moved to take Jemma’s hand in her free hand, and when Jemma was looking at her, Cosima got down on one knee and pulled the ring out of her pocket. The ring was the perfect ratio, like the tattoo she had on the inside of her wrist, and there were little diamonds lining the spiral of it. It wasn’t ostentatious or gaudy, it was simple elegance. “I just want to make crazy science with you for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?”
Jemma laughed some and nodded, “Yes, Mr. Stark does seem to always have that sense of humour to him.” Mostly. In the Dreams it was more complicated, a mask of sorts. But from what she had seen here? That wasn’t the case. Besides, like Cosima, Jemma knew that the way things had worked out allowed them to work together.
Now, Jemma would be the first to say she was obtuse when it came to relationships and missing things. Hello, she had completely blanked on the fact that by inviting Cosima to the Bat Mitzvah, she was in essence asking her to meet her family. But even she could tell that something was happening by the way her girlfriend had said she wanted to explore the mysteries of life with her in general.
Still, she blinked as she turned to face Cosima, though her eyes widened as she saw her girlfriend get on her knee. They had discussed the possibility of marriage recently - actually discussed it and not just throw away lines from things that had happened in the dreams. So it really shouldn’t have been that shocking. Even so, Jemma was surprised and could only look at the ring and Cosima. Was this really happening?
“Yes. Of course I’ll marry you and make crazy science with you.”
It had been a long while since she had smiled so freely. Yes, Cosima could make her smile anyway but all the constant stresses from Dreams and work… well, for the first time in a very long time, Jemma felt free of all those stresses.
Even with the fact that they’d discussed marriage, Cosima had hoped for the element of surprise. While she wasn’t always traditional when it came some things, she still liked the idea of surprising Jemma with a proposal and getting down on one knee. It was important to Cosima to do a proper proposal with a ring and all.
Seeing the smile on Jemma’s face and hearing her answer (even though she already knew the answer from their earlier conversation on the topic), made Cosima smile just as widely and happily. She slid the ring onto the proper finger before she got back up to her feet. Pulling Jemma close, she kissed her happily, barely stifling a little laugh into the kiss.
After several moments, she broke the kiss, the grin still on her face. “I love you,” she said, feeling like a giddy school girl in some ways.
Cosima had always been better at the romantic gestures things. Jemma’s way of showing her feelings was less conventional and she probably would have botched a proper proposal. So instead she was more than happy to let her girlfriend, scratch that, fiance take that particular role.
Smiling brightly as the ring was slid on, she was oblivious to anyone who might have seen what had just happened and returned the kiss.
“I love you, too.”
