When: recent
Where: A cafe
rating: PG-13

Jessica knew she probably should have reached out to Doug’s friend Kitty to try and meet the other woman before now but she’d been a little scared to. She hadn’t been serious with anybody in a while before Doug and even then it had been people she’d known a while, hung out with the same people before dating then. So she was in almost new territory here. But she’d finally broken down and done it, sending her a message over the net asking if they could meet for coffee or something. In a weird way she felt like she’d never have met Doug if it hadn’t been for Kitty living in the area.
Kitty drove down to the appointed meeting place on the back of a motorcycle that was almost eerily silent. She hopped off of it and headed inside, looking for Jessica. It was a nice little cafe, the kind where you sat down to order, and she hadn’t been here yet. She hoped the coffee was pretty good.
She wondered if the chicken fingers were.
Jess had only been here a few times so she knew that it was a nice quiet cafe, good for a conversation over lunch. And the reuben was pretty good. She had grabbed a table that she could see the door from and was watching for Kitty, having seen her picture on the network and she smiled when she saw the dark haired woman come through the door. “Kitty? Over here,” she said, waving and letting out a small breath to calm her nerves.
“Hey!” Kitty waved back at her, bouncing over and taking the seat across from her. She kept an easy, reassuring smile on her face. She liked to set people at ease and having been a teacher and headmaster, she liked to think she’d gotten good at that.
“Nice to meet you officially.”
“Nice to meet you too,” Jess said, relaxing a little more. There was something about Kitty that just made her comfortable. “Did you have any trouble finding the place? I know it’s a little out of the way but they make probably the best reuben I’ve ever had.”
“Nope! Google maps.” Kitty winked, settling back in her seat and flashing another bright smile. “I want to try the chicken tenders but if you say the rueben is good I should try it.”
“I’ve never tried the chicken tenders here. One of my coworkers swears they’re great though. I just know what I like here I guess.” Jess said smiling back at her. “And I can also personally attest to the pie. It even transports well. I’ve taken it back to work with me a few times.”
“...chicken tenders and some pie it is.” She really was sold at pie. There were only a few things she didn’t like in general, and pie was definitely one of the things that she liked. Besides, one couldn’t go wrong when it came to chicken tenders and pie.
Kitty was definitely her type of woman with the way she reacted to the mention of pie. “I love the apple here. And there are very few places that I like apple pie from. I’m partial to my mom’s after all.” Jess said, catching a waitress’ eye and nodding her head to let her know they were ready to order.
“And lunch is on me since I asked you to meet me okay?”
“Apple is good. Apple is best, except for pumpkin. My dad makes amazing pumpkin pie.” She tried not to think about her mom at all, especially near Hanukkah and a few other holidays. Not that she was dead or anything, she just hadn’t taken her dating women near as well as her dad did.
“If you want to treat me, I get to treat you some other time.”
“Oh God pumpkin pie. I could probably eat my weight in pumpkin pie. I’ve toying with the idea of making one with a chocolate crust one of these days just to see how it would turn out taste wise.” It would be a risk she knew but she thought it might turn out not completely awful.
“I can live with that compromise.”
“That sounds like it would either be awesome or awful,” Kitty replied. She leaned towards the second, but then there were some things that just didn’t go with chocolate for her. She didn’t like reese’s pieces, which was a crime she knew.
“That’s probably why I haven’t made it before now. I’ll get either Doug or my best friend Regulus to taste it with me. That way if it’s horrible - I don’t suffer alone.” Jess told her with a half shrug and a wink.
“That’s what best friends are for,” Kitty quipped. “And boyfriends too. Doug is a lucky dog, if I do say so myself.”
Jess grinned at her. “I feel pretty lucky myself getting to be with him. I have to admit my motives for wanting to meet you were entirely selfish. You’re important to him and I was hoping we’d at least get along and not hate each other.”
“I like you fine so far,” Kitty said, then added. “Unless you’re an axe murderer or worse, then we might have a problem.”
Jess thought about making a joke about being an axe murderer but decided against it. “The only thing I’ve ever killed is a 6-pack of beer with my best friend or my dad. Or those bugs that have way too many legs but love to come into my house. God only knows how they get in there.” There was also that time she’d eaten an entire pizza by herself but it had been a margherita thin crust so she didn’t think it was all that bad.
“Those are good kills,” Kitty agreed. “Especially the beer. I’m not huge into beer myself, I prefer harder stuff, but I get it.”
She’d also get the entire pizza by yourself thing if it ever came up.
“Some days you just need a drink or three. The harder stuff is good too - there’s generally a bottle of rum or whiskey hiding behind my beer. I just don’t reach for it as often.” That was for when her day had really been shit.
“And when that doesn’t help - Saturdays at the gun range.” And talking to Doug but she figured that went without saying.
“Really don’t recommend beer and whiskey at the same time,” Kitty rubbed her forehead at the memory. “Mythbusters proved that made for the worse hangover and I thought ‘hey I should try that too’ and regrets. So many regrets.”
She raised her eyebrow. “Gunrange?”
Jess couldn’t help but laugh a little at Kitty’s comment about mixing beer and whiskey. “Yeah. I learned in college not to mix my alcohols that way. Although apparently I really amused some of my hallmates that night. But it was so not worth it for the hangover I had the next day.”
“Yeah. My stepdad is a cop and he taught me how to shoot. Makes sure I stay up on my permits and everything and we go shooting together once or twice a month.”
“I can mix you up a couple of nice drinks. I used to do bartending.” She winked. “Well, in my dreams, but that totally counts.”
Jess grinned at her new friend. Well, hopefully a new friend. “It definitely counts. And it’ll be a nice change for me because my mix drink knowledge is pretty much limited to rum and coke or those premade mixes they sell in the grocery store.”
“Oh, we’ve gotta fix that for you,” Kitty promised. “I can name a whole bunch of drinks that would blow your mind! And half of them have dirty, dirty names.”
Jess laughed and shook her head at the waiters expression when they dropped off their food. It was still nice to see that not everyone was completely immune to being shocked. Especially over something like that. “We definitely have to get together one night so that I can try those. Maybe on a night Doug can join us so that we can use him as another guinea pig.” She paused for a moment before continuing. “And you know if you’re dating someone they could definitely come to hang out too.”
Kitty grinned back, then pulled out her phone to show Jess her girlfriend. “Somehow I think she’ll be the only one not drunk off her butt.”
“Just promise me that she’s not going to make up stories about what the rest of us got up to drunk?” Jess said as she looked up from the picture to Kitty.
Kitty winked “Promise. She’s what I like to call a cinnamon roll.”
