Who: Xena & Rose
What: Bar Meeting
When: Friday night
Where: The Inferno
Rating: Low
Status: Complete!
After her first meeting with Neena, Rose knew she had found her new watering hole. The atmosphere was just right and it helped that she knew the owner now. How could you go wrong with someone who went out of their way to get the chips just right and bring out the malt vinegar to go with them? Rose found herself frequenting the place a bit more than she probably should, but it was for the chips, really.
Friday night was another story however and she sat at the bar with a pint and a half eaten plate of fries in front of her. One of the busiest nights so she only saw glimpses of Neena as she played hostess, bartender, waitress, etc., but that was fine with her. She knew as soon as she had a free moment, she’d sit down to enjoy the chips with her. She was sure she had already gone through the cup of coffee she had brought and Rose began to wonder if she should start to bring two…
Rose had been keeping to herself for the evening, staving off any unwanted attention by pulling out her phone to play with, pretending to be absorbed by the network if someone started to get a bit too friendly. But this current gentleman was really not getting the picture. Rose turned to him, her smile strained. “Look mate, I just came here to grab a pint and wait for my friend. Didn’t anyone teach you no means no?” She caught the eye of a woman sitting not too far away and her smile grew. “And here she is now! Hey!” She waved her hand, as if calling her over, hopeful the woman would play along with her.
Xena always made a point of checking out a new-to-her place when it was advertised on the network. It was good to go where Dreamers might, and it was also good to have a place to drink that might not end up trashed in violence. Usually Callisto-caused violence, but Xena had both started and ended her share of barfights too.
She sipped at her drink as she studied the bar with practiced ease. Rose’s problem caught her attention, and if there hadn’t been an opening to play along, she would have marched over and snapped his wrist.
Instead, she slid out of her chair and came over, slinging an arm around Rose and planting a kiss on her cheek, dangerously close to her lips. “Hey sweetheart.”
What, she had a thing for blondes.
Well that was certainly a way to deter the annoying gentleman. Rose blinked, glancing at the guy before grinning and, hesitantly, wrapping an arm around the woman’s waist. “Just in time sweetie. This bloke was trying to convince me what a better time I would have in his company. Care to comment?” She glanced at the woman, hoping the look she gave was one that appeared adoring and infatuated.
Oh good, she was playing along. Xena grinned at her, then turned back to the man and gave him a size-you-up type of look. “I don’t think he’d be very convincing. He looks like he’d give you as good of a time as genital warts would.”
Rose couldn’t help but laugh at the comment, a genuine sound as she glanced back over at the guy with a ‘sorry, not sorry’ face. “Sorry mate, looks like you’ll have to find someone else to harass.” The guy gave the two a begrudged stare before moving back around to the far corner of the bar. Rose glanced his way before looking at her rescuer with a thankful head not.
“Thank you,” she said, emphasizing the words and taking a seat once more. “I thought we were in a time where no meant no!”
“A lot of guys haven’t really changed with the times, at least in some places,” Xena said. She shrugged and offered Rose a wink. “I’m Xena and I’m happy to help a damsel in distress.”
Rose gave her a grin and held her glass up. “Cheers Xena! Lemme buy you a round!” Rose never thought of herself as a damsel in distress, but the creep certainly wasn’t taking the hint. “I guess better to fool him then get into a physical fight.” Rose had never been apart of one of those. She glanced around for the bartender, holding up her hand to bring him over.
“Whatever the lady wants,” she said, grinning.
“Free drinks, ain’t gonna complain about that.” Xena nodded at her, leaning back against the bar like she owned the place. “I coulda taken him, easy. But then I might get kicked out and that would be a shame.”
“Yeah, this bar is the best,” she said, emphasizing it. “Have you been here before?” She nodded her head and put some money on the counter as the bartender brought over their drinks. She turned her barstool to face the same way Xena was. “Do you come here often?” Rose didn’t mean for it to sound like a pick up line, but she hadn’t recognized the woman before.
“A few times,” Xena replied. “Ain’t my usual haunt, but it’s nice to change it up once in awhile. Clientele here are a little less rough around the edges.” She glanced around, then back at Rose. “Way less leather, if you catch my drift.”
Rose didn’t really catch her drift but she nodded her head all the same. “Doesn’t surprise me though, seems like you can hold your own when you need to!” Rose was never a very confrontational sort of person, but she also didn’t like seeing people get away with something. Still, Xena seemed the type of woman of action vs a more vocal approach that Rose was use to.
“Best chips in all of the OC!” Rose added that tidbit on as if it were an important mark for the Inferno. “Hungry?”
“That’s one way to put it.” Xena flashed her a grin. If she wasn’t busting heads in a bar, she was busting warlord and god’s heads in her dreams. It seemed to be a pretty common thing for her, even if sometimes the more gentle dreams were preferable.
“Starving, and that’s a good sell.”
Rose grinned, waving the bartender over again and putting in another order of fries and a burger for Xena. “You’ll have to share the chips with me though,” she said with a grin. “But food’s on me! Thanks again for the help earlier.” She glanced back at where the guy had gotten to before seeing he had spent little time in finding a new girl to harass. She rolled her eyes, glancing back at Xena. “That guy’s gonna get punched tonight, I can just feel it!” Good, maybe he’d actually learn a lesson.
“So where’s your usual place?”
“I’ll hit him if someone else does,” Xena promised. She leaned in, winking. “It’s closer to the docks. Kinda rough and tumble. I run with a lot of bikers and we hang out there. There’s a couple other places I like, more upscale, good dancing. I’m a woman of many talents and mysteries.”
Rose couldn’t help but show an impressed face, with a silly grin afterwards, at her last comment. “Many talents and mysteries huh?” She could definitely see her running around with bikers however; she was the type of woman who wouldn’t put up with any kind of nonsense, something Rose could admire in a woman. “I’m not really rough and tumble, but dancing sounds like fun! Sort of fancy waltzing and stuff like that?”
“Many talents and mysteries,” Xena said, though she was getting the impression Rose was either clueless or less-than-sapphic. Which was fine, she wasn’t looking for anything but fun - being hung up on someone from dreams was a quick way to hurt people. “Not fancy waltzes. Clubbing. The kind where bodies spend a lot of time rubbing all up against one another.”
Rose couldn’t help but laugh at her description of clubbing, although she wasn’t really wrong. “Oh, the type of dancing people think make them look so good but they actually look a bit spastic?” She grinned, shaking her head. “Been known to do a few moves myself, but can’t say I’m much of a dancer.” To be honest, she tried to picture Xena dancing in that way and couldn’t find herself seeing it. “Still, if there’s an occasion to celebrate, clubbin’s the way to go! Maybe I’ll check it out sometime!”
“Yeah, that kinda dancing, “ Xena replied, grinning at Rose. “I’m sure you’re a lot better than a spastic awkward dancer. I’ll forward you an address if you want. Don’t go there much any more, but I’ve got some memories.”
She did seem to fit Neena’s bar or a rough and rowdy bar better, but when Xena wanted to clean up, she could really clean up.
“Cheers mate!” Rose took a sip of her drink before pulling her phone out and handing it to Xena. “Sometimes you just wanna dance, ya know? Hopefully we can meet up there! We can be each other’s wingwoman!”
“I’ll break a few hands when you need them,” Xena promised.
