The last couple of months had meant a lot of late nights for Leon. This was especially true with Chris now living with him. Chris easily spent more time at school or with his babysitter than he did with Leon, which Leon knew wasn’t ideal. So, the off-duty hours he normally spent dedicated to going over evidence or listening again to the witness testimonies for anything he might have missed were now spent playing with his little brother, and the hours he used to dedicate to sleeping were now spent doing the work that he should have been doing when he was with Chris.
Leon glanced at the clock when he heard Chris shuffling around in his bedroom. It was 2 am, and Leon frowned to himself.
“What are you doing up?” he asked Chris when the bleary-eyed boy shuffled out of his bedroom.
Thirsty, Chris signed at him, and made his way to the fridge.
He didn’t look as though he had had a nightmare and was looking for comfort, so Leon turned back to the crime scene photos he had laid out in front of him. “Alright, just make it quick. You’ve got school in the morning,” he reminded him.
I wonder if we have anymore Coke, Leon heard Chris say as he opened the fridge.
“Nah, sorry bud. I drink the last one. I’ll pick some more up after work tomorrow though,” Leon responded, not looking up.
It took a moment for Leon to realize that he hadn’t heard Chris rummaging around in the fridge, and he looked up to see his brother staring wide-eyed at him. Leon stared back, running the interaction they’d just had.
“Did you just say something?” he asked after a moment, a little shocked that he hadn’t realized that his mute brother had actually spoken.
Chris, wide-eyed, shook his head.
Leon blinked, then pinched the bridge of his nose. If he was hearing things, it was probably time for him to go to sleep. Right after he finished going over this file again. “Well, there’s some juice in the fridge. Just pour yourself a glass and get to bed.”
He could hear Chris dig through the fridge for the juice. Orange juice again? I hate orange juice.
This time, Leon’s head snapped up from the file, but Chris wasn’t looking at him, and it sure didn’t seem like he had just said something. “You didn’t just say that you hated orange juice, did you?” Leon asked hesitantly. He had to have been losing his mind.
Chris slowly shook his head, and then stared intently at his older brother as though he was concentrating. No, but I thought it. Can you hear my thoughts?
Leon’s jaw dropped. There was no way he could hear his brother’s thoughts, could he? That was totally insane. But was it more insane than invasions, magical healing, and psychic MEs? Maybe not so much.
Besides, this could always be a dream. He might have fallen asleep at the kitchen table and was now having weirdass dreams. No point in thinking too hard about it. “I guess I can,” he said after a moment.
Chris’s eyes widened, and he ran toward Leon. Leon had time just to get out of his chair before Chris was throwing his arms around his big brother’s legs. Leon bent down to lift up his brother, and Chris instead wrapped his arms around Leon’s neck. “Hey, don’t get too excited,” Leon said. “This might just be a dream Now let’s get you to bed so I don’t have to deal with an angry phone call from your school tomorrow about how you fell asleep in class.”
He carried Chris into the boy’s bedroom and laid him down in bed. “I’ll bring you a glass of water, alright? Now try to get to sleep.” When Chris nodded, Leon smiled, ruffled his hair, and walked out of the room. He made it as far as the door when he heard Chris again.
Good night, big brother.
A small smile tugged at Leon’s lips. “Good night, kiddo.”
