Match and Anna were running. Down the alleyway they went and around the corner, ducking into a small alcove against a building to catch their breaths. “This is possibly more annoying than zombies.”
Match had been fighting these things for what seemed like days. Even he was getting tired..
He glanced at Anna. “How are you doing?”
***
It was absolutely insane. Anna knew about Orange County craziness on Halloween, so she hadn’t been planning on going out. Besides, Wash was gone saving Carolina, and Anna was very much happy moping around worrying about him, thankyouverymuch. But there was some last minute photo thing she and Match had to do for the movie premiere… So Anna had gone out to meet up with the producer… and after that meeting, she and Match were on their way back to their cars when… there were monsters. Or aliens? Whatever.
Anna was fast. She wasn’t the fastest, but she could hold her own. She was keeping up pretty well with Match as they made their way away from the parking lot and down an alley.
“I can’t… even…” She shook her head, trying to catch her breath. “I’m okay. I’m okay.” She stood up straight, tucking her hair behind her ears. “You okay?
***
“Yeah. So far so good.” he glanced around the edge of the alleyway and then pulled back. “We seem to have lost them for a second, but we should keep moving. Maybe come back for the cars tomorrow.”
He nodded, not wanting to go out there again. Almost nothing could hurt him, but enough somethings, enough times, well… no one was ever immortal.
***
“All right. They didn’t seem like they were interested in crashing out car windows, so that was a plus,” Anna mused as she leaned over to take a look out the side of the alley. They had a moment of respite. She leaned against the brick wall and sighed, finally catching up with her breath.
“What the heck were those things? Black and white and...red? I’ve never seen anything like it.” She clutched at a stitch in her side. “Is anyone saying anything about it on Valarnet?”
***
“I’m not sure. I lost my phone the first day. I heard some screams, and went out and never got back in. I’ve been going from fight to fight since then. It was pure happenstance I made it to the photo thing at all, but the idea of you being out here on your own… I wasn’t willing to chance that.”
He blew out a long breath. “How are you feeling?”
He groaned, rubbing his head. “I have a headache.” He had taken a lot of blows to the head, been surrounded a few times. And, well, like he had said. He was impervious to a lot, but there were a lot of these things, and they seemed like magic, which he was not immune to.
***
“I’m all right,” Anna said. She didn’t like the way things were going in Orange County, but she still couldn’t fathom leaving. Maybe that was part of the magic--the fact that she couldn’t imagine staying with all the atrocities, but she also couldn’t imagine leaving her home.
“God, I wish I was a better fighter. Or a survivor. Or something. I feel so useless when stuff like this happens!” Anna was normally so strong, so for her to admit this weakness was a break in her character. Ever the optimist, ever the fighter, it was showing how Orange County had worn her down.
“Do you think it’s safe to get into that cafe over there?” There was a spot across the street and down a few doors. Maybe they could find some other people there. Safety in numbers, and all.
***
“We’ll get through this. Just hang on, and we will get out of here.” He helped her moved toward the door. “I think we have to. We need some place defensible. Some place we can hunker down in.”
He nodded. “Lets go.” And he started out with her, hoping they had found a haven ahead. At the door to the cafe, he knocked, then pounded as he heard sounds behind.
“Shit.” Around the corner, some of the things came.
“Get inside, fast.”
Concentrating, he sent shot after shot of heat vision into the things, managing to slow them down, but not stop them completely.
***
Anna nodded. She went along behind him, keeping low and moving quickly. But then he swore. Anna’s head snapped to the side and she saw the creature come lumbering around the corner. Crap!!
She turned to run to whatever door was nearest. Thankfully, they’d made it far enough that the closest door was their destination. She yanked the door open and dashed through, then held it open for him. “Come on!”
***
Match shot in and slammed the door shut, then used his powers to weld it shut. “Alright. Let’s see if we can find some place to just… rest. Hopefully those things will go away, and then we can go home.”
He reached out and hugged her and sighed.
“Another crazy week in the OC, huh?”
***
“Yeah.” Anna said. “Another crazy week.” She hugged him back, then turned to look around at the cafe. There were other people hiding in there. She figured this was a safe place… for now.
“C’mon. Let’s go see what we can do to help.”
