"Well, we have to recognize the changing seasons somehow it Southern
California," Leia said as she picked up her pumpkin flavored muffin
and coffee from the cafe counter. She stepped aside so that Luke
could grab his, as well. It felt like it had been months, rather than
weeks, since she'd seen him last. She smirked at him. "This was a
good idea I had."
Luke took his own muffin and coffee from the counter and followed her to a table. "How else would we know without pumpkins?" He sat down, taking a sip from his coffee. "It was a great idea. I need to get out from behind the wheel a little more often."
And she needed to get out of the garage. "I kind of miss the racing
days, though. I think if I went back to the pit now, I would probably
be overwhelmed, but still, I miss parts of it." She gestured to an
empty table for them to sit.
"There's always a place for you on my team, just say the word, I'd love to have my sister looking out for me."
She sighed, falling neatly into a chair. "It's temping sometimes, but I have a life here. A quieter life, but I'm getting to the point where that isn't a bad thing. And Han couldn't survive without me. He doesn't know where anything is."
Luke smiled. "Sometimes I think a quiet life would be nice, but maybe
not just yet." Life now was good. Busy and exciting and he liked
that. He'd probably go crazy if he stood still too long. "But you're
right. I think Han would be lost without you."
"You know," she began with a sigh. "I..." But Leia bit her tongue. She wasn't sure she should go on. But the interruption lasted only a few seconds. Soon, she found her voice once again. "I half-expected he would propose to me the night of the gala. But... I think might have been reading into things too much."
Luke looked a little surprised. Han hadn't proposed? But he had
shown him the ring and everything. "Maybe." He took a drink of his
coffee. He knew that Leia would be able to read his surprise, but
maybe she would just think he was surprised she thought Han would
propose.
She did catch it, and shot him a bit of a look. "What? What was that face you just made?" She pursed her lips together.
"You and Han have been together for a while. What made you think he
was going to propose now?" Oh she would see through that. He was
never really able to mislead or lie to her.
Leia leaned in. "He said something to you, didn't he?" She bypassed his question, as she sometimes tended to do when she felt she was on to something.
Luke shifted uncomfortably. This was one of those hard parts about
being friends with your sister's boyfriend. Keeping secrets,
especially when you didn't understand them. "Let's just say, I'm as
surprised as you are that he didn't propose."
She pointed her finger. "I knew it!" she exclaimed in a whisper, teeth slightly clenched. She shook her head and sipped her coffee. "I knew it... but then dammit, why didn't he?"
Luke shook his head. There were a lot of times that he didn't
completely understand Han. "I don't know."
Leia would have agreed, but living with him had built up a certain tolerance. She sighed. "But... he was planning it?" Then she sighed again. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't be asking you this. Han probably trusted you to keep it a secret. And you're too good."
Luke sighed. "I could talk to him? I mean, I probably should. I
don't know how much I'd be able to tell you, but I could at least
see."
At this, Leia shrugged. "What does it matter? What would it really change?" But she didn't sound sad. She wanted to get married because she wanted to call Han her husband, rather than her boyfriend, but in actuality it wouldn't affect their lives very much. At least, she told herself that often enough.
Maybe she sounded a little sad.
Luke took her hand. "I'm sorry, sis. I can go beat him up for you,
if you want." It was mostly a joke. Something he always offered
whenever she seemed sad about a boyfriend.
"No, that's okay," she replied. "Knowing Han, I'm sure he's doing that himself already."
Leia sighed and took another sip of her coffee. It was very sweet, but she liked that. "So, let's change the subject," she said. "What else is new with you, in the last few weeks?"
Luke shrugged. "I've been working on my time. There is one racer I
just cannot consistently beat, it's been driving me crazy. She's
really good. Other than that... I need to get out more. I spend way
too much time on the track. I need a hobby. Maybe yoga. I've been
thinking of starting yoga."
Leia tilted her head, trying to picture her brother in a yoga class, surrounded by flexible ladies. She stifled a laugh. "I could see that. I think you might enjoy it."
Luke laughed. "You know, slowing down and taking a breath. I think
it could be good for me, don't you?"
"Sure who couldn't use some more Zen in their...--" Leia's voice faded in her own throat at that peculiar moment. Her eyes had lifted from the table and locked themselves on the cafe door. It was plain to see that someone entering had stolen her attention, and she didn't look at all happy.
He was a middle-aged man, with broad shoulders and a beard; handsome, but not especially well dressed. He was clearly coming in from a job outdoors. Leia scowled. "Crap..."
Luke looked to the door. That wasn't exactly a normal reaction from
Leia. "Who's that?" Luke asked, looking back at Leia, worried.
She didn't answer him exactly, deciding instead to say, "I'd rather get out of here first. That guy was snooping around the garage a little while ago. He makes me nervous." And no one really made Leia nervous.
As for the man himself, he seemed distracted as he walked to the counter to order his coffee. Something was not right.
Luke looked really worried now. "Okay, let's get out of here." He
could always ask her about it later.
Obi-Wan felt like there was something on the back of his neck, like a bug. The hair there kept bristling. His heart was also doing little skips inside his chest. Something--the Force, perhaps--was compelling him to turn around; but he felt anxious about it and he didn't know why.
Leia pushed back her chair, whispering to Luke, "Come on." They were going to make a quick exit.
But Obi-Wan did turn around. And he and Leia locked eyes. And his his widened to the point of popping as they fell upon her brother beside her. His mouth dried up. Leia came to an unexpected halt. She set her jaw. "Well, fancy meeting you here."
Luke gave Obi-Wan a very nice smile. Well, it looked like a nice
smile. He was concerned for his sister and feeling more than a little
protective. "I'm very sorry, but we were actually just about to
leave." He was standing just in front of his sister; while his smile
was nice and his words were polite his body language was protective
and wary.
Typically, Leia didn't let anyone protect her, but Luke was a special case. She didn't think Obi-Wan was a threat. Still, she wanted him to know she didn't care for him.
Obi-Wan, meanwhile, thought he might be on the verge on an aneurysm, the tension in his skull was building so quickly. Still, he put a hand up. "Listen, I really want to apologize for what I did back at the garage."
Leia folded her arms. "Oh, do you have an explanation for that."
"No," Obi-Wan said. "I just want to say I'm sorry for it."
"You were spying on us. You were spying on Han's engine." The volume on her voice was going up.
Luke raised an eyebrow. This was interesting. He wanted to hear what
Obi-Wan had to say. Leia sometimes could blow things out of
proportion, but spying was serious. "Were you spying? Or was there
another reason you were at the garage?"
Obi-Wan considered Luke like he was looking at long-lost missing left sock. And the look itself was as strange on his features at it sounded. He look a quick cleansing breath to clear it away. "Yes I was spying, but not on your engine."
Leia cocked an eyebrow. "Oh, so you were outside my office window just because you're a peeping Tom?"
"No, of course not," Obi-Wan sputtered. He took a step back, and winced from the pain in his leg. The gunshot wound was still tender.
The look that Obi-Wan gave him threw Luke a bit. He'd never seen this
man before, but he looked at him like they knew each other. Luke
looked down at Obi-Wan's leg when he winced. The quick change of
weight to the other leg told him the other man was injured. "So what
were you spying on?"
Leia's arms were still folded as she waited for a reasonable answer.
Obi-Wan, however, had none. "I was..." He sighed a frustrated sigh. "I was just trying to figure out where I knew Leia and Han from. I... dreamed about them."
Leia wrinkled her nose. It wasn't unusual for someone to bring up the mystical dreams in conversation anymore, but about dreams about her? And Han? "Well, I'm certainly not dreaming about you," she said.
Luke looked a little annoyed. He had heard a few people talking about
dreams, but he'd never had one, and it always seemed silly to him.
"Sit down before you hurt yourself," Luke said, gesturing to his leg.
He didn't know how the man got injured, but he couldn't stand seeing
someone hurt standing there just hurting himself more. "Why not just
come into the garage and talk to Han and Leia like a reasonable, and
far less creepy, person?"
Obi-Wan waved off his offer to sit down. "Because back when the dreams started I didn't know what the devil was going on. And since then, Leia, I did try to contact Han, but he really wanted me to stay away. So I did." He let it sit there.
Leia rolled her eyes. "...Well, like we said, we were on our way out."
"Right, well, I wouldn't want Han to get mad at me, so maybe we should
just leave." Luke looked at Leia. It was up to her. He was a little
intrigued by the whole thing, including the way Obi-Wan had looked at
Luke like he knew him. Luke was normally a much more trusting guy,
but if his sister was concerned then he was concerned.
The look she exchanged with him was more of a motion to start walking, which she did. The door opened and closed behind her.
Obi-Wan pressed his lips together, to keep from bursting out and saying something foolish. In his dreams, he saw Luke more often as a baby than an adult. What he wanted to do right now, more than anything in the world, was embrace him. And he never thought much about laying a finger on anyone. Physical contact made him so uncomfortable. But this was like his own child walking away from him. Yet, he knew he had to let him go.
Luke looked back at Obi-Wan before following Leia out the door. The
look on his face almost made him stop. Again, it was like Obi-Wan
knew him. He shook it off and followed his sister. Maybe he would
meet Obi-Wan again. Maybe he would understand this later.
