Damon might not need medics, but they were there, along with police who had gotten there first. Among them was Alex. Upon hearing where the place was, he was caught between annoyed and concerned, all overshadowed by the job they had to do.
Before their arrival, dispatch gave a brief description of the victim. The description didn't sound like Damon, but Alex prepared himself anyway. Where violence and attempted murder or even murder were concerned, it was always diving into the fire, sending Alex's heart racing. He gripped his medic pack and climbed down from the rig when they arrived on scene. He was observant, but also on autopilot. A woman was in the back of a police cruiser and a man showed them to their victim.
Alex held his breath until he saw it wasn't Damon. He got to work quickly, noting Damon there, but concentrating on what he was supposed to do. A quick assessment showed that the man had a nice, high GCS rating. He held his stomach where they focused on the most. Alex cut the man's shirt open to assess the wound. The man reached for the knife, but Alex stopped in. "No, no, no, leave that alone," he urged. It didn't look that deep, but the man had definitely earned a trip to the hospital.
Alex shone a light in the man's eyes, checking his pupils, his gloved hands moving swiftly. "We're going to take you to the hospital, alright, bud?" The man nodded. The man wasn't bleeding out so no action was taken there. Their job now would be to keep an eye on him and cover him in blankets so he wouldn't go into shock before reaching the hospital. Alex wrapped a dressing around the knife still lodged in the man's belly. When the stretcher was brought out, Alex urged the man not to sit up on his own. With the help of his crew, Alex got the man onto the stretcher. He was given an oxygen mask.
Finally, Alex spared a glance toward Damon, a look of relief in the greens of his eyes. Damon's face was splashed with rotating red and white from the lights of the rig. Alex blinked slowly, then turned and hurried back to the rig with their patient. No time for chit chat. Maybe he'd text Damon later after all.
