Despite being in a secure relationship with a very good job Capable still had a fortnightly meeting with her counsellor, apparently growing up in and then escaping from a cult was something that required continued support. And Capable couldn’t say she minded, it was nice to have someone who knew everything and who she could open up to. She didn’t always like to unload everything onto Furiosa, though she knew her girlfriend would do what she could to help and listen.
She was waiting for a prescription to be prepared, sitting in the waiting room when somebody else walked in and she moved her bag so that he would have a seat to sit in.
***
Thor was limping as he came from dropping off his prescription paper, and to the sitting room, just having spent an hour and a half with his physical therapist. Freshly showered, he dropped his bag as gently as he could on the floor in front of him as he tried to not fall into the chair.
He kept his groan to just a grunt as he sat, and nodded to the woman who had moved her bag.
“Thank you, miss.” His voice was a deep rumble, and right now, a very tired, deep rumble. His face, which had adorned many a calendar and television set above a famous uniform, was now haggard and worn. Working a muscle back from an injury was hard. When you had two? It was harder.
***
“You’re welcome” Capable said, a look of concern on her face as he sat, “Are you okay? Is there anything I can get for you? There’s a coffee machine” she added in explanation gesturing to the other side of the room.
He looked very tired and was obviously struggling with an injury, had Capable been up to date on sports news she may well have recognised him but as such though he seemed vaguely familiar there was no real recognition there.
***
“Hmm? No, but thank you. I’m staying off the stuff for now, during physical therapy. Doctor’s orders.” He cleared his throat and sat up a little more straight, smiling that warm smile that had graced news coverage and magazine covers.
“I appreciate it, and I’ll be okay, I promise. Working back from the injuries that sidelined me is harder than I thought it would be. Harder than getting into shape the first time was, frankly. But I will be okay.”
He was tired, and hurting, but that was what the painkillers were for.
***
Capable nodded, “Oh I’m sorry to hear that. You seem to have a positive attitude though, which I am sure will help a lot” she said with a smile of her own.
“I’ve found things are harder to push through if you focus on the bad things” she added softly. He was obviously a strong man and she thought it must be hard for him to have suddenly found himself with what she assumed was a serious injury.
***
“I do my best. Not always easy, but I do my best.” With his injury, it could easily spell the end of his career, which he was still not sure of. And not ready for. And so he worked and pushed himself hard, and hoped. He hoped a lot.
“True. Focusing on what is bad only leads you to not being able to see the good.” He smiled to her, a boyish grin, and nodded approval at her attitude.
“These days, it is just one day at a time, and a slow work to recover.” He didn’t like being out but he might well be out for the whole season. He had no idea. He was going to try to get better as he could though.
“One step at a time.”
Then he shook his head. “And what brings you here, miss? I hope you are not suffering.” There was sincerity in his voice and gaze as he looked across her.
***
“The best is all we can do and I am sure it will do well for you” Capable told him with a smile in return. She tried to always look for the good in things, it was the best way to live in her mind.
“You are not afraid of hard work which means you will succeed” she told him reassuringly, “Just be sure to take your time, one step at a time is a good thing to remind yourself of” she knew what it was like to try and push yourself too quickly, it hardly ever ended well.
“No, thank you. I just have an ongoing appointment with a therapist, I grew up in a strange situation” she explained, still not overly comfortable explaining the cult, “It means I sometimes need to use sleeping aids which is why I am here” She tried not to take the pills often but sometimes she needed to.
***
“I’ve never been afraid of a little hard work, or a lot.” Which was true. He loved pushing himself and this was another form of that. A harder one, but still. He smiled at her, nodding, She was right. He could do this.
“Ah, good. We all need a little help sometimes. I’m glad you have found the strength you need to get it.” He reached down into his bag and lifted out his meds. “I’ve been on antidepressants since high school. I know how hard it is to admit to needing help sometimes.”
***
“I think sometimes people mistake needing help for admitting weakness and it really is nothing like that” Capable said, “Everybody needs help sometimes and we all need it in different ways. I am glad you have found the right medication to aid you” Capable had been put on antidepressants when she had first gotten free but they hadn’t suited her. That didn’t mean she didn’t appreciate the good they could do for others though.
***
“Exactly. You are rather a smart person, ahead of the curve of many I’ve seen in these halls.” He smiled to her, nodding. He was glad to hear her attitude, and her words. It was not often he heard it from someone of her apparent age.
“It took some time to find the right kind, and as I’ve grown and changed, so has my prescription, but yes. I would not be nearly so alive if it were not for these.”
He smiled softly, sitting back again.
“Its nice to sit down. Physical therapy every few days makes for a very tired Thor.”
***
Capable blushed, “Thank you” she said with a sweet smile, it was kind of him to say so. She didn’t feel smart all the time but it made her feel good to hear such praise.
“Will you get to relax for the rest of the day?” she asked him before adding, “Is Thor your name?” It wasn’t often she met somebody with an unusual name. It was like finding kinship when she did.
***
“I will. Home for a soak, then hopefully loafing around cooking and watching some of my shows.” he grinned, and nodded. He liked being able to rest, sometimes, hated it the rest of the time. But he did his best to follow the doctor’s orders.
And he was wiped out.
“Yes, ma’am. Thor Odinson, at your service.” He gave her a sitting bow, with the east of someone who had been made to practice it endlessly as a kid.
***
“That sounds like the best plan” Capable smiled, she was heading into work but she was on a shorter shift today so it wasn’t so bad. A good soak in the bath sounded good though.
“Pleased to meet you, I’m Capable” she said holding out her hand to him.
***
“A pleasure to meet you, Capable. That is an awesome name.” He shook her hand and planted a chaste kiss on it.
“I hope things work out for you.” he nodded again.
His name was called and he rose. “Looks like I am ready. It was nice meeting you. Maybe we’ll talk again, sometime?” He nodded to her as he moved to pay for his medicine.
***
“Thank you” she replied with a grin finding it oddly fitting for him that he kissed her hand, he seemed like an honest to goodness gentlemen which only went to endear him to her.
“You too” she said with a nod, “I hope so. It’s been lovely to meet you” she told him honestly.
***
“And you, miss. I hope you have a good day.” He retrieved his medicine and headed out, giving her a wave and smiling. It was nice to meet and talk to someone else who understood.
