Who: Freya and Liv What: First meeting When: Thursday, October 5th Where: Random bar Warnings: None! Status: Log | Complete
Sometimes after a day in the morgue Liv liked to stop on her way home and have a drink. It wasn’t an everyday occurrence, unless of course she had consumed the brain of an alcoholic. But tonight was a night where a drink sounded pretty damn good. Especially after her recent dreams. She would normally stop in at The Double Tap, but it was closed still thanks to the storm that had happened a little over a week ago. Liv ended up at a bar she hadn’t been to before. But as long as they had jalapeño margaritas she was good.
She made her way over to the bar spotting the only empty stool next to a blonde. “Anyone sitting here?” Liv asked hoping the answer was no. It didn’t look like there was, but still it didn’t hurt to check.
Freya was… well, she wasn’t sure. After everything with her parents (and Klaus’ subsequent overprotective measures), she had just needed to get out. Oh she was sure her brother was undoubtedly somewhere nearby. She loved him and knew he worried but she wasn’t about to drop dead or anything like that. Pesky overprotective younger brothers. No matter, she at least was able to still work and now she was out.
So of course with the realization about the magic and the dreams (would she ever be free of Dahlia? Honestly dreaming about being in a spelled coma but stuck with her aunt even as she ran from her was draining), going out for a drink or two was just what she needed. Drink ordered, Freya was waiting for it when she heard a voice and turn to look at the woman.
“No, it’s open.”
“Thanks,” Liv said taking a seat on the stool. She flagged the bartender down ordering her usual jalapeño margarita. Heavy in the jalapeños. Luckily they had it, but liv had some hot sauce in her purse just in case it needed a little extra spice. Liv never went anywhere without hot sauce these days.
Once her drink was ordered she turned her attention back to the woman next to her. It looked as though she was here alone given the fact that she let Liv have the seat next to her and she didn’t seem to be talking to the guy on the other side. “I’m Liv.” She was always up for meeting new people, or at the very least making conversation while she had a drink.
When Liv had given her order, Freya had to admit that she was mildly intrigued by the notion. Then again, Peppered Horilka was very popular in Ukraine so it wasn’t like she hadn’t had spicy drinks herself. She just hadn’t heard of jalapeno margaritas before. With her own drink delivered, Freya took a sip before turning her attention back to Liv as she introduced herself.
“I’m Freya. Do you usually drink spicy drinks?”
It wasn’t something she saw often so it had gotten her attention. And if Liv was looking for suggestions, well, there was Peppered Horilka though she wasn’t sure how available it would be in the area. Didn’t hurt to suggest it though if she was interested.
“I do. I have a thing for spicy.” As in it was the only thing she could taste. But that was a little too much information to give someone she just met. Hell most of the people in her life didn’t even know that about her. Sure they knew she liked spicy foods and drinks, but they didn’t know it was all she could taste. “Ever tried one?”
“Well, spicy foods and the like have been noted for their health benefits, so nothing wrong with that.” It helped with traveling and boosting the immune system, that much was certain. Still she shook her head at the question about the drink. “No, I can’t say I’ve had a jalapeno margarita before. Though I have had Pepper Horilka while I was working in Kiev.” Freya did have to admit that there were some pretty inventive drinks out there and she even without having heard of jalapeno margaritas before, she couldn’t say she was surprised to learn about them in general.
A drink Liv had never heard of before. “Now I want to go to Kiev just to try that,” Liv commented with a laugh. But after her last trip overseas she was done for awhile. “What were you doing for work there?” Of course Liv was curious. It wasn’t everyday someone talked about working in the Ukraine.
“I’m sure you can find it at BevMo or something.” Not that she had actually tried looking. But there tended to be specialty stores, so it was possible to find a bottle. As for what she did? “I was contracted with UN Women to work with programs that were combating domestic violence.”
“I’ll have to look for it.” Not that Liv didn’t love her jalapeño margaritas, but she was always looking for new spicy drinks. Her palate was so limited, she had to change it up whenever she could.
“Wow,” Liv commented as her drink was finally delivered. That was some intense and impressive work. Admirable even. “How’d you get into that?”
“You should.” Freya of course had no idea about Liv’s limited palate when it came to drinks. Just that if someone liked spicy drinks, then the Peppered Horilka would be something they might like to try.
“While I was in grad school, there was an internship with the United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights that I did. After I graduated, I started taking contract positions with them, Amnesty International, International Rescue Committee and the like.” It had been luck of a the draw, and then her need to always be on the move so it had worked out.
“What about you? What sort of work do you do?”
“So it’s something you’ve always been interested in,” Liv commented taking a sip of her drink. Again admirable. Not everyone could do that work. “We need more people like you.” Liv herself had worked a few domestic violence cases, had the visions that went along with them. It killed her that people had to go through that.
“I’m a medical examiner,” Liv replied. It wasn’t quite a noble, but she did her best to bring justice to those who could not longer get it for themselves.
“Something like that.” There were a lot of complicated factors involved, and she usually went wherever she was needed. Which did tend to be mostly with women and children and refugees and focusing on international human rights issues. Still, she did have that passion so while the work might be exhausting and never quite the same, she couldn’t see herself in a different sort of work setting.
“Always a necessary profession.” One that could be difficult for a lot of people given that they were dealing with dead bodies all the time. “And not an easy one.”
“Neither is yours,” Liv commented. As for her own profession? The dead bodies didn’t bother her. Hell she needed them to survive but that wasn’t information she shared easily.
“So what brings you out tonight?”
“Touche.” It was long and exhausting work, but that was the way of it and it had been her choice. Though at least she didn’t have a need to survive off it the way Liv did. Not that she knew.
“Been cooped up for a bit and wanted to get out.” That was the nice way of saying she finally convinced her overprotective paranoid brother that she was fine now after everything from the previous weekend was dealt with and she didn’t need to stay inside to rest. “You?”
“Avoiding the county?” Liv could understand that considering she wanted to do the same sometimes. Not to mention it wasn’t that long ago that they were having insane weather and mercenaries running around.
“I haven’t had the best dreams,” she shrugged. Liv had gone without dreams for such a long time. It was a nice break. But now that she had them again she needed to see what was next. Get answers from Drake.
“More like health issues.” Still, the comment about the county could be taken as either one of the people who lived there with no true grasp of what was happening, or someone on the network. It was the second comment that really solidified that it was more a network comment. Why else mention dreams?
“Seems to be going around.” At least from Freya’s understanding from the dreams and what she had either seen mentioned on the network, or just from conversation with her brothers and Evie’s warnings.
Health issues? That didn’t sound good. Obviously. Because when did health issues every sound good? “But it’s okay for you to be out now?” Liv asked with genuine concern in her tone. Not that she knew the woman all that well, but still Liv wouldn’t wish health issues on anyone. Plus someone who could recommend a new spicy drink was already on her good side.
“Yeah, I’m fine now.” Freya wasn’t quite sure what would happen if she got rid of the amulet which managed to act as an anchor and ground her, but she wasn’t about to find out. Really it was nothing to worry about. Finishing off her drink, Freya shrugged. “Nothing to worry about on that front.”
“That’s good to hear,” she paused as she sipped her drink. “Er, that you’re okay now. Not that you had health issues,” she clarified. Freya looked healthy as well. And Liv did have some expertise in that area.
Freya laughed some and nodded, “I understood what you meant, don’t worry.” It wasn’t that hard to figure out. And Freya had practice given she had six younger siblings. Sentences coming out differently from their intended meaning? Came with the territory.
Well that was a relief. Liv raised her glass holding it up for a cheers. “To good health, new friends and new drinks,” she grinned. Liv was definitely going to make sure she got her hands on some Pepper Horilka now.
