Once again Orange County was under attack. She really should consider moving herself, Liam, and Logan the hell out of this place. But for today she needed to fight. To protect her county. Keith had Liam for the time being. He was safer in Malibu. Outside of the county. Today her partner in crime, or rather against crime, was Leon.
“What do you think brought these fuckers?” she asked her friend, although she suddenly felt a bit more than friend vibes for him. Definitely out of the ordinary considering she was very much in love with her baby daddy.
“Why the hell are you asking me?” Leon asked. Frankly, he had no idea what was going on anymore. Weird movie zombies one month, these fuckers the next. Strange men randomly teleporting into his apartment. Alecto going on and on about magic. If he wasn’t such a practical guy he’d almost think that there was something supernatural happening in his state.
He glanced over at Veronica, and suddenly found himself a little tongue-tied. When did Veronica get so hot? He shook his head. Logan was his best friend, and he had no right thinking of his girlfriend as anything other than ‘not hideous.’ “You got any ideas?” he asked, the bite gone from his voice.
Unlike Leon, Veronica was well aware of the odd shit that happened in Orange County. That the supernatural was possible. But why the hell these mercenaries were showing up she had no idea. Usually she would say something like ‘no you idiot that’s why I asked you’ but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Instead she found herself just staring at Leon, almost the same thoughts running through her own head. When the hell did he get so damn attractive? She had a strong urge to rip his clothes off and have her way with him, in the middle of the freakin’ streets of Anaheim. Something she wouldn’t even do with her very serious boyfriend.
“No,” Veronica finally replied. “I just know we need to get them the hell out of here.” Her taser wouldn’t do much good. But with all the crazy that happened around here, she had gotten a gun and even gone to the shooting range with Garrus a few times. It was her weapon of choice for the day.
“Yeah, and then you and I should get out of here,” he said. I really hadn’t meant for the suggestive tone to come across in his voice. He had to fix this before she thought he was flirting with him. “And get a drink.” That… probably just made it worse. “Back at my place.”
He swallowed, face growing increasingly red. He cocked his gun, and got ready to move before he could find a way to shove his foot deeper down his throat. “Just stay behind me.”
Was Leon hitting on her? Did Veronica actually want him to be? It wasn’t like drinking with Leon was all that unusual. They had done it numerous times before. With and without Logan. But this offer just felt different. And somehow Veronica found herself agreeing. “Your place,” she agreed in the same suggestive tone.
While Veronica wouldn’t mind the view of staying behind Leon. How had she never noticed that ass before? She was still perfectly capable of taking care of herself thank you very much. “I can handle a gun,” Veronica replied. Well, okay, that sounded a bit wrong.
“Oh yeah? You could show me over that drink later,” he said, and then shook his head as if to get these images of Veronica out of his head. It was way too distracting having her this close. Besides, they were supposed to be doing something. Something that definitely didn’t involve Leon pulling Veronica into one of these alleys and seeing just how much of a gunslinger she really was. “But Logan would kill me if I let anything happen to you, so for now you’ll let me cover you.” He had hoped bringing up Logan would help get Veronica’s lips out of his head, but instead it just made him feel guilty about it.
Right, Logan. Veronica swallowed pushing thoughts of Leon and his ass aside. Logan’s ass was the one that should be in her mind. Besides that, Veronica didn’t need to be covered. Logan was the same way, always trying to protect her when she didn’t need it. “Or,” Veronica said pulling her gun out of her bag. “I can show you right now.” Without any hesitation she shot one of the mercenaries right in the head. “Told you I could handle a gun,” Veronica smirked.
Leon winced. He’d already discovered that the only way to stop these guys was to kill them, but it still felt wrong that he wasn’t locking them up and throwing them in a cell someplace. He shot three shots, hitting three of the armoured guys in the kneecaps. If cops were opening fire, they were supposed to aim for big spots, like the torso, but Leon had been shooting since he was a kid specifically so he could incapacitate a suspect with minimal damage.
The armoured guys looked as though they were about to open fire on the two of them, so Leon grabbed Veronica around the waist and pulled her back behind cover with him. Maybe Veronica had proven she could handle a gun, but Leon wasn’t about to wait to find out if also knew how to keep herself safe from return fire.
She was suddenly very close to Leon. Her breath caught in her throat as he held her against the wall. Before she could stop herself her hands were on that ass of his. The fact that there were mercenaries shooting at them was far from her brain. Her lips crashed into Leon’s, lust taking over. It wasn’t until her tongue tried to part his lips that she realized just what she was doing.
Just as fast as it had started, Veronica pulled away, taking a few steps back from Leon. “I love Logan,” she snapped at him. Like it was Leon’s fault she had just assaulted him with her lips.
Leon had been surprised at first, but had started to return the kiss when Veronica broke away. A wave of disappointment overtook him, and then a sharp anger when she mentioned Logan. Why was she thinking of him, when Leon was right here? Then came the guilt, as he remembered that Logan was his best friend and that just yesterday, there is no way he would have even considered kissing Veronica. And then the panic. What would they tell Logan? Would they tell him anyway? Should they tell him before or after they banged?
His arms were still wrapped around Veronica, and he dropped them to his sides quickly before that last thought could get anymore traction. “Chris left the oven on!” he exclaimed stupidly, and then turned to leave the alley. He’d rather face armoured mercenaries than Veronica and his own libido right now.
