Everything had gone so well. Even though Kitty had been utterly speechless seeing Diana in that dress. And she’d tripped like three times, and was scarlet for at least half the dinner. Diana was just so beautiful. Stunning. Wonderful. Amazing. So many adjectives!
She thought she’d looked hot too, but nothing like Diana.
Especially after they’d gotten back to Diana’s place and that dress had hit the floor with that sound and Kitty had never lusted after someone so much in her life.
Her dreams were normal, no mutant deportations or any of the other crap they routinely threw at her. She woke up first, and rolled over to spoon Diana. Or jetpack. In this case she was the jetpack. (she was a little spoon mostly, but right now she just wanted to fold herself around the other woman)
Diana had thought Kitty looked amazing in her dress, though she also had not pulled any punches in teasing Kitty or being flirtatious. Which had undoubtedly helped what had come after they’d gotten back to her place.
What Diana had not been prepared for was what would come after she fell into slumber. She’d been worried as her last dream had left off in the midst of a battle on the beach when that strange man that she’d pulled out of the water had arrived with soldiers right behind him trying to kill him.
While she’d been in shock at first and hadn’t leapt into the fight initially, Diana had taken to fighting this time. The men had strange weapons that fired projectiles. She’d seen one go right by her and kill one of her fellow Amazons. Somewhere in the middle of the fight, Diana had a grazing wound to her left arm that bled, but she’d left her back open. And, well, she’d turned in time to see the soldier aiming his weapon at her.
Then she heard it. Antiope’s cry before she threw herself between them, taking the shot. Diana cried out, running to her aunt’s side as the battle finally came to a halt. Antiope died in her arms, and Diana didn’t know how to handle it. She’d never experienced death before.
Diana cried out as she jerked awake. She was overcome with intense emotion as she sat up, tears streaming down her face and the wound on her left arm was bleeding, but she didn’t even notice it. She was too distraught to notice anything other than the fact her aunt had just died.
Kitty jerked out of her warm haze, hands in fists as if ready or a fight. She remembered where she was and turned to Diana. The first thing she was was the blood, and the second the tears. Oh.
She went into crisis mode, rolling over to grab -okay it was a stocking, that would do - then wrapping it around Diana’s arm. “Okay. Okay. You’re not dreaming. You’re awake. You’re here. Nothing bad is happening here.”
When Kitty wrapped the stocking around her arm, Diana jerked a bit, looking down at it, suddenly realizing that wound had crossed over. She then looked back up at Kitty, some recognition that she wasn’t on that beach on Themyscira but was instead in her home in Orange County with Kitty. But even that didn’t stop a sob coming out of her as tears were streaming down her face.
“It should have been me,” she managed to say, voice cracking with a sob and emotion.
Wrapping her arms around Diana, Kitty pulled her close and smoothed her hand over her hair. Somehow, the fact it was Diana on the verge of sobbing made it even worse. She wasn’t used to that kind of emotion on her face. Her jaw tensed and her throat bobbed, and she didn’t have to guess the meaning of her words. They were clear enough, even without seeing the movie. “I’m sorry.”
Diana hugged Kitty back, pressing her face into her shoulder as she cried. Even if it had just been a dream, it had felt so real. When she was calmer later, she’d call her aunt just to ensure that she was fine here. Even if she logically knew her mother would have blown up her phone with calls and messages by now if something had actually happened. But for the time being, she could only cling to Kitty and cry. And perhaps she was holding onto Kitty just a little too tightly. Diana didn’t really know her own strength just yet.
It did feel a little like she was being crushed and Kitty swore she heard her ribs creaking. But she couldn’t bring herself to make Diana stop, and just rubbed her back and stroked her hair and let her cry. She rocked her a little, remembering what it was like to wake up alone after a dream like that. It wasn’t a feeling she wanted Diana to know.
It definitely wasn’t a good feeling, and Diana just let herself cry it out. She managed to not crush Kitty in her arms as she cried. But finally, after a while, she managed to calm down enough to talk and she took a couple slow, deep breaths as she sniffed. “Antiope died in my arms. She took a shot that was meant for me.”
Breathing, breathing was good. Kitty took a deep breath, turning her head to kiss Diana’s cheek, then leaned back to wipe at her tears. “I’m so sorry.” And she was. She knew that pain. Her dad. Her friends. So many. “You should call her. It’ll help to hear her voice.”
Diana glanced at the clock, taking in the time, and then calculated what time it was back in Greece. “Yes, I should call her before it gets to be too much later.” With that, she let go of Kitty and reached for her phone. She took a few moments to gather herself enough before calling her aunt, who thankfully answered. She spoke to her in Greek for a few minutes before hanging up. She’d managed to play off sounding upset as being from a bad dream. Which wasn’t a lie, she did have a bad dream. “That is better.”
Kitty shifted behind her, rubbing her upper back and shoulders, trying to knead the tension out of them while she talked to her aunt. When Diana hung up, Kitty dropped her arms to around Diana’s waist and hugged her from behind. “Good.”
She kissed her shoulder and sighed heavily. “I was hoping your dreams would be all paradise and fun.”
The shoulder and upper back rub definitely felt good, and it helped a bit. After setting her phone aside, Diana leaned back against Kitty, setting her hands over Kitty’s. “So did I, though being an Amazon meant war would come eventually. And it has.” It was confusing, especially when they knew nothing of the outside world any longer.
“Tell me what happened. Maybe focusing on the… rest of it will make it easier to deal with.” Kitty kissed her shoulder again (really, she loved shoulders). “We can talk through and you know, figure it out.”
“You remember when I mentioned I pulled a man out of the water and then others came behind him and a battle broke out?” It had probably been a couple days since the dream of that battle beginning. “I just dreamt the rest of the battle. I finally picked up a bow and shot some of the attackers. One of them raised his weapon and pointed it at me. I turned too slowly, something Antiope saw, and she cried out and ran in between us, taking the shot. She...she died in my arms.” Her voice cracked again and her eyes welled up with tears again. “It should have been me.”
Kitty nodded against Diana's back at the man in the water, but she didn't say anything, letting her lover continue without interruption. She could visualize the battle. It had been epic to watch on the screen, but she knew how living it could be so different. "She was a hero, and she would have done that for you no matter what. To her, you were worth it. And I’d have done the same.”
“She was the fiercest and best warrior of all of us. She trained me to be the best warrior, and I spent half the battle simply watching, unable to take up arms and fight like I’d been trained to do.” Diana sniffed, closing her eyes.
"Your first fight is always one of the hardest. I froze the first time too. First couple of times." It wasn't an easy lesson to learn. That inaction could lead to people dying or getting hurt. But it had been one reason Kitty had wanted to act when faced with injustice.
"What did she say do you? Was she able to say anything?"
“She told me that the time had come. She said that I must, which she didn’t finish the sentence of. Then she said god killer and that I must go. Then, she died.” Diana sniffed and closed her eyes again, pressing her lips together as she felt more tears coming. “She must be telling me that I must take the Godkiller sword and leave, that perhaps Ares is behind this.”
“If there’s a big war, and soldiers were chasing that man… You said it was a prop plane? Do you remember if it was a biplane or single wing? There’s only two wars it could be and both were pretty big.” Part of Kitty was screaming at her to tell her everything, but even if she wanted to she couldn’t. It was like something was blocking her from being able to do so. It wasn’t the first time Kitty had experienced that and it always frustrated her. “But she might be right.”
“Single wing. Though in my knowledge from this world, the plane and the uniforms the soldiers wore looked to be from World War I. That would be my guess, though I suppose I will learn more as I dream.” Getting any sense of what year it was in her dreams was virtually impossible. All Diana could go on was how long Themyscira had been protected from the outside world, but even then dates could be off. Luckily from her waking life, Diana had some perspective on those soldiers that had arrived on Themyscira’s shores.
The only comfort Kitty could think of, was that at least Diana would have a pretty chronologically straight narrative. She squeezed her hands and nuzzled her back. “If you’re really going out to war, it’s not going to be pretty. If I’m not in bed with you, I’m always a phone call away. Maybe it wasn’t a world war, but I’ve dreamed of wars.”
She took a breath and leaned into Kitty a bit more. “Thank you. I don’t anticipate it being easy or simple. My dream self may have other expectations.” Though it wasn’t through any fault of Diana’s. War wasn’t pretty, but in her dreams, she had a more simplistic view of it. Ares was the bad guy, and kill him and that would be that. But it was to be expected when Diana didn’t have much to compare it to.
“Think she’s a little naive?” Kitty asked. “You grew up in paradise, the real world isn’t going to be kind.” It didn’t deserve Diana. Sometimes Kitty thought it didn’t deserve any help at all.
“I think so, but she was raised in a bubble. I suppose that is also a literal bubble considering the magic or whatever that shields Themyscira from the rest of the world.” Diana wanted to save the world, but there was only so much that she could do.
“There’s not enough innocence in the world.” Kitty kissed Diana, right at the back of her neck. “Maybe it would be better to keep all that locked in the bubble. Kind of like hope in Pandora’s box.” Diana as hope. It was something she could see.
“No, there is not. Though one should fight to ensure what little innocence is left is able to be protected.” And that was innocence in all forms, not just children.
“That’s something I’d expect you to say.” Kitty unwrapped herself from Diana, crawling around on the bed until she was in front of her. “And a reason why I like you so much. You’re kind of a person who’s eternally hopeful in the face of everything.”
Looking at Kitty when she moved in front of her, Diana had to smile a little bit. “I always have been that kind of person. I know the world is cruel, but I feel that someone needs to maintain hope. Otherwise there is no hope in the world at all. And that would be far worse than only having a little hope.”
“I’ve been there. The no hope thing. And it’s funny because I was always the optimistic one.” She’d gotten beaten down over and over again. “But I like to try to remain optimistic. I think… seeing you has really helped remind me of that.”
“I’ve been told I have hope to spare, so if you find yourself needing some, don’t hesitate to come here to find it.” Diana said. She reached up and caressed Kitty’s cheek with her hand. “I will give you as much hope as you want.”
“As long as you keep some for yourself, Diana.” She nuzzled Diana’s hand, much like a cat would, then turned her face to kiss Diana’s palm. She had an extremely fond and infatuated look on her face. “Do you want me to make you some breakfast?”
“I will,” she responded with a little smile. She kept her hand against Kitty’s cheek, liking the nuzzling and the kiss to her palm. “That would be lovely if you did.” After all, might as well let Kitty return the favor now and then! Diana didn’t mind cooking, but sometimes the favor did need to be returned.
“Okay. Luckily I can make breakfast. You don’t want me making dinner.” She leaned in, kissing Diana and letting it linger, before she slipped out of bed and padded nude through the door. She forgot to open it. And forgot she had forgotten to show Diana her abilities.
Oops.
“I will keep that in mind,” she responded, then returned the kiss. Diana smiled, watching Kitty as she headed out of the room. Except. Wait. She didn’t use the door. Diana blinked, completely perplexed.
“Kitty?” She asked, deeply confused at what she’d just seen. Diana knew that Kitty had some sort of abilities, she’d said as much once. She just hadn’t seen them yet.
Kitty’s head popped back through the door. “Yeah?”
Wait. “Crap.” She stepped fully back into the bedroom. “Surprise?”
Diana blinked and got up, walking over to the door. “This is your power?” She asked. She also had to touch the door, to see if it was still solid.
"...Yes." She ran her hand through her hair, which was still messed up from sleeping and other activities. "I can reverse the polarity of my molecules and become less dense than other objects. Even air."
She floated up until she matched Diana's height.
Diana tilted her head, listening to Kitty’s explanation. She then looked her over when she floated up to match Diana’s height. “That is amazing. So you can move through solid objects, hover. Are you able to fly then, as well? Or is that not how your ability works?” She was genuinely intrigued and not fearful of the ability. It was strange, but Diana could adjust to it easily.
“I can’t fly. It’s more like… floating. Or walking on air.” Kitty spun around, like she was dancing, then grabbed Diana’s hand and pulled her up with her. “Or dance.”
“That is amazing. So you are able to reverse the polarity of other people’s molecules as well?” This was certainly quite the experience. But she was taking it quite well!
“Yes! That takes more concentration.” Kitty kissed Diana’s jaw, and snuggled in against her. “It’s actually kind of my default state. Being ghost like. I always have to concentrate to keep myself from drifting apart.”
It hadn’t always been that way, but Kitty wasn’t going to bother Diana with that trauma today. Not after Antiope. “I don’t even notice that anymore. It’s been a part of me for so long now that I don’t think I could be any other way.”
She wrapped her arms around Kitty. And then a little devious thought entered her mind. “What happens if you’re floating and you lose concentration? Do you drift apart or do you just fall to the ground like a sack of potatoes?” It was an important question in Diana’s mind.
“It’s happened a few times.” Kitty frowned. “I think I just float down. In one of my dreams I came down from orbit. I’ve always been a little more worried about getting stuck inside something.” She let go of Diana, feeling a sudden phantom pain in her arm, from the one dream where she’d lost it taking down a feral Logan.
“Though that kind of happened once.” She balled up her right fist, and a metal claw slid out from between the knuckles of her middle and ring finger. “I ended up with this.”
After Xi’an had died, she’d experimented with a bone claw, phasing it in and out of her arm like one of Logan’s claws. It had worked but hadn’t been very sustainable.
Diana frowned a little. “I can see why you would be worried about that.” And frankly, Diana didn’t want Kitty to get stuck inside anything. That would not be a good experience at all.
The metal claw was unexpected. Diana looked at it curiously, then lifted her gaze back to Kitty’s face. “A cat must have her claw,” she said, though she quickly turned serious again. “That couldn’t have been an easy experience in getting stuck in something.”
It would probably be fatal. Kitty smiled at Diana, appreciating the pun. The claw retracted and she couldn't quite hide an expression of pain.
"I was lucky that time." Kitty floated them back down and wrapped her arms around Diana. "But lets talk about good things. Your morning sucked."
Seeing that expression of pain, Diana pressed a hand against Kitty’s cheek, gently caressing it, an expression of sympathy on her own face. She then wrapped her other arm around Kitty and held her close. “Perhaps we could talk about what you were going to make for breakfast?”
And as if on cue, Diana heard some mewling. “And it seems the little ones are awake and wanting breakfast as well.” She laughed lightly.
“You take care of the babies,” Kitty said, staring at Diana’s face. “And I’ll make omelettes.”
She bit her lip and sheepishly added. “It’s the only thing I know how to make really.”
It was a good thing Diana knew how to cook, though Kitty didn’t follow that train of thought. As it was she was having a hard time controlling her emotions whenever she looked at her. Kitty was falling in love with Diana and she didn’t know if that was as good as she wanted it to be.
“I am fine with omelettes.” Diana said with a reassuring smile. Perhaps she’d teach Kitty some simple recipes as time went on. Cooking was an artform, but it never hurt to be able to cook a couple different things! She gazed at Kitty for some moments before she leaned in and kissed her again. The only thing interrupting the kiss lingering longer was the growling of Diana’s stomach, which seemed to be echoed by the kittens.
Kitty leaned up into the kiss, and was still on her tippy toes, face tilted up, when Diana broke it. Her eyes fluttered open, and she blushed as she rolled back onto her heels. “I love y--omelletes.”
Too soon! Too soon! Kitty hurried out of the bedroom and facepalmed on the other side of the door.
Kitty catching herself caught Diana’s attention, but she wasn’t going to call her on it. Perhaps she could understand what, exactly, Kitty had started to say, but now wasn’t the time to prod it. She just smiled and shook her head before exiting the bedroom a few moments later to go take care of the kittens while Kitty made breakfast.
