It was nice to be back in the Orange County, and even nicer to to be able to see his old friends. Izzy had been one of the ones he’d missed the most, and she was glad that she’d agreed to come out for dinner and a couple of drinks with him.
“So, dinner’s on me, by the way. I just got a sweet new raise, so I’ve got cash to spare.” He’d been able to live kind of comfortably on his old wage. He had no idea what he was going to do with a 16% raise, but giving his friends food and booze seemed like a good first step.
Izzy had been extremely excited when Katou returned to Orange County, she’d missed him a lot and hadn’t been able to stop herself giving him an enthusiastic hug when she’d first seen him.
“Oh get you” she teased, but was obviously happy for him, “Careful I might get used to being treated” she grinned.
Katou snorted. “Oh, I wouldn't get used to it if I was you. My generous and benevolent spirit only makes an appearance once in a while.” He winked at her, opened his menu, and scanned it absentmindedly. “So, how the hell’ve you been since I left? You still seeing that boyfriend of yours?”
Izzy laughed, “Still with Simon” she nodded, “We’re sickeningly happy. Oh, Audrey and I applied to be on television for the bakery. I don’t suppose you’ve ever seen the show Cake Wars have you?” she asked him.
“Yeah, I bet you are,” Katou said. “Just so long as I don’t gotta see it, we’re cool.” Though, he did want to meet Simon at some point. He and Izzy had been together for a while, but Katou still had to make sure he was good enough for her. “But yeah, Cake Wars is totally a show I’d watch,” Katou said, rolling his eyes.
“No PDA in front of you, I’ll try to remember that” Izzy said with a laugh, though she too would like them to meet. Just because Katou was an important friend and she wanted all the people she loved to get along. She leaned over and smacked him on the arm, “Alright alright, I should have known. But it could have been a secret guilty pleasure” she replied, “Basically it’s a cookery show where bakeries compete in a series of challenges to come out as the winner. We’re very excited”
“Well, maybe I’ll give it a shot if you’re gonna be on the show,” Katou said. He sighed dramatically. “Though, it’s too bad I quit. Seems a downright tragedy that this face ain’t gonna be on TV.”
Not that he was sure his face would have been on TV. It wasn’t like he was one of the guys who’d made the cakes.
“It’s true, can you imagine with both of us on there? We’d be breaking hearts all over the country” Izzy said with a smile.
Izzy would have made sure he’d been part of their team, he was fun to have around and he was better with customer service than he’d thought he was.
“We’d have all the guys swoo-” he cut off sharply as he realized the waitress was approaching. He ordered his food and a beer, showing his fake ID when he was asked. Now that Caleb had gotten himself thrown in prison, Izzy was the only person who knew Katou wasn’t entirely straight, and right now, he wanted to keep it that way.
Izzy placed her order and waited until the waitress was gone before reaching over to squeeze Katou’s hand, “We definitely would” she told him, wanting him to know she was always here, if he needed to talk or anything really. “So tell me about you. How are you doing? Obviously doing well at your job with that new raise”
“Yeah, pretty good,” Katou said. “Getting back into the swing of the OC craziness. Gotta wonder just how much weirder things got since I left if I’m getting a raise just for showing up.” Not that Katou minded weird. When he was dealing with Agency weirdness, it just meant that he didn’t have much time to think about other things. “I don’t wanna say London was boring, but it wasn’t like anything terribly exciting happened. At least, not like here. Gotta hang out with Jack and Wendy, which was nice. Drank a lot of Scrumpy Jack’s over by the Camden Lock. But they’re sorely lacking in demon invasions over there. But what did I miss over here?”
“Things are still pretty weird” Izzy said, thinking back on what had happened recently, “Oh we had people spontaneously bursting into song for a while, stormtroopers invading, some weird zombie things - have to admit they were super fun to kill” she grinned, “So yeah, you know usual stuff for this place”
“What, like, Mary Poppins style?” Katou asked, his raising both his eyebrows. He’d heard about the zombie things that had shown up just before Katou had decided to move back, and he still chafed at it. “I can’t decide if that’d be awesome or not.” He didn’t hate singing, though he really was more of a guitar guy. But random musical numbers could be a lot of fun.
“All kinds. Some people made up their own, some people did it like karaoke, it was pretty funny” Izzy said, “Thankfully I escaped having to sing, but it was definitely entertaining. And you know, less dangerous than zombies” she grinned.
“Aw, too bad. I’d love to hear you sing.” He had no idea if she was any good or not, but laughing at his friends terrible singing voices was almost more fun than hearing them perform well. “We should totally do karaoke after this.”
Izzy laughed, “It’s your ears you’re risking” she warned him, in truth she wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t something she did in public. Izzy wasn’t a shy person but there were some things she was better at, like kicking ass. “I bet you have a great singing voice, right?” she grinned.
Katou shrugged. “Depends on what your definition of ‘great’ is,” he said. “I ain’t gonna be winning no opera contests or nothing any time soon, but if you dig Rancid or like, Dropkick and shit like that, you’ll probably get a kick out of it.” If he wanted to, he probably could actually sing, but it wasn’t like he had any inspiration to be a pop star and hadn’t bothered to train his voice in such a way. “But hey, I’d risk my ears to see you embarrass yourself any day of the week.”
“Honestly I have no idea who Rancid or Dropkick are” Izzy admitted, “Makes me very uncool right?” she grinned. “Well if you want to go do karaoke after this then I will embarrass myself for you”
“Seriously?” Katou deadpanned. He’d specifically named two of the most well-known punk bands he could think of, and she still didn’t know who they were? “Looks like I’m gonna have to introduce you to a whole new world of music, girlie.” He leaned back in his chair as their food was delivered. “You ain’t gonna know what hit you.”
