After the last couple of days, Martha was ready for a vacation or at least a reprieve from the crazy shit that happened in Orange County. Earlier in the summer her and Clara had brought up the idea of taking a trip and including River as well, but no real planning had happened yet. Now however, seemed like a good time to do that. She was planning on sending, both, Clara and River a message soon about said vacation, but for tonight, she was going to have a couple of drinks.
Sure, it was the middle of the week, but she had spent most of the last couple of days with River, helping anyone without the path of the zombies and demons then at the Agency, helping anyone who had been more seriously injured that she hadn’t been able to do much in the field. It had been a very long couple of days, so once she’d gotten home, she changed and headed to her favorite bar, not too far from her apartment.
Jemma wasn’t the type to normally go out drinking, especially alone. However, today she was making an exception. With everything that had gone on with the latest round of insanity (so juggling her duties at the Agency as well as doing in field type medical care) and then the latest round of dreams? Well. Sometimes a break in routine was a good thing. With Cosima having plans that night, it was up to Jemma to find somewhere to go.
Of course once she arrived at said bar, the biochemist was wondering if she had made a mistake as she felt awkward just… going to a bar by herself. Or she could spot Martha going in. Well, that saved her the feeling of awkwardness.
“Martha! Hello.” And jogging up to her to join her. Well, assuming she wasn’t meeting anyone. But if she was, then she could just go off on her own.
Martha was used to running into people she knew at this particular bar so hearing Jemma’s voice wasn’t a huge surprise, “Hey, Jemma. Is Cosima with you?” She was used to seeing the two women at work and gone out with them on occasion as well.
Okay, so far it didn’t seem like she was interrupting anything, that was a relief. But Jemma would still be prepared to go away if Martha were just early and waiting still. For now though, she would talk with Martha and see what happened.
“Not tonight. She had other plans.”
Martha definitely wasn’t waiting for anyone and was happy to see her friend, “Then you should join me. I think after the week or so we just had we could both use a couple of drinks,” She gestured towards the door of the bar, “First round is on me.”
And that answered her question and Jemma just smiled brightly at the offer.
“I think you are onto something there.” Because it really had been quite the week with the past invasion. Not like that was anything particularly new, but it had still been a mess and stressful. Who didn’t need a drink after that? Then add in the normal stressors of life? Exactly. “I can work with that.”
“Great. Let's go.” Martha turned to the door and pushed it open, making sure that Jemma was following her before she started towards the bar, “So how’ve things been in your department this past week? I can’t imagine any department had an easy week.” While the Science department might not have had as much to do during the initial invasion besides stay alive, she was sure that they had had plenty to do afterwards as far as obtaining samples to experiment on went. At least that’s what Martha assumed.
Heading towards the bar, Jemma shrugged at the question.
“Oh you know, dealing with any samples that came in. I got roped into emergency medical.” Which was all too common in her dreams and here. So while she sometimes wanted to say she wasn’t that type of doctor, the truth was she had the basic training and it came in use. And since she’d been at the Agency itself while most of medical had been out in the field, a lot fell to her.
“Now it’s clean up.”
“I was doing medical in the field as well. I went out with someone else from my dreams,” In all the time Martha had lived in Orange County, this had been the first time she had actually gone out in the field during an invasion of that magnitude and helped those who were unable to get to a hospital. Almost all of the other events of this nature, she had been working at the hospital and had helped them as they had come in, but this time she couldn’t just sit around and wait to be needed.
Reaching the bar, she waited till a bartender looked their way then she ordered her drink and waited for Jemma to order her own.
This was one of those times where Jemma knew not to fangirl over Doctor Who what with it being Martha’s dreams and that was just awkward. But she did have to wonder who it was that she had gone out into the field with as she knew there were a few people from Doctor Who in Orange County.
“Yeah? How was that? I mean besides the whole chaos of everything that was going on.”
Because you really couldn’t escape that. Orange County and all. And there was the bartender and Jemma put in her order before turning her attention back to Martha.
“Just as crazy as I assumed it would be,” Martha paid the bartender as he placed their drinks on the bar top then turned back to Jemma, “Reminded me of some of the crazy things that happened in my dreams, in a way,” Martha didn’t do too much medical stuff in the field, in her dreams, but she had seen enough alien invasions and crazy things in general, that she had been somewhat desensitized to the chaos and mayhem going on around them while her and River had helped people.
Taking a sip of her drink, Jemma nodded.
“If I weren’t in the lab and helping in medical at the Agency, I imagine I would feel similar. The chaos is not something that is exactly new for me in the dreams, let alone here. Though I suppose that tends to be the way given where we work.”
It was true that there was a wide variety of Dreamers. However, it seemed those that got pulled into the Agency tended to be have Dreams where dealing with invasions and aliens and more intense things was more normal than it might be for others.
“Maybe the next time something happens we won’t be dragged into it,” Martha wasn’t naive enough to think that there wouldn’t be another incident, but she could only hope that the next time something did happen, there wouldn’t be any threat to civilians. It was one thing for the threat to be to Dreamers, because for the most part they were expecting these things, but normal citizens weren’t expecting it. Well, most weren’t. She was sure there were some who didn’t exactly believe the coverups. “Maybe we’ll get a break next time.”
Jemma bit back a laugh at the maybe they’d get a break next time. It was true, sometimes things happened that the Agency didn’t need to be involved in. Like the random compulsive singing. Nothing more than awkwardness and bruised egos and potentially opening up about things through song. No injuries, no invasions. But she also was all too familiar with the fact that when you hoped for something, or said something about so long as X didn’t happen… well that was a sure fire way for it to happen. Orange County strangeness and all. Still, all she could do was raise her glass in mock toast.
“To a chance to breathe in the midst of Orange County.”
