Capable wasn’t a particularly loud person she could be quite shy and quiet until she became comfortable with her surroundings and people around her. Which is why she positioned herself at the back of the self defence class, though with a good line of sight to the instructor so she could see everything being demonstrated and copy accordingly. It felt good and she slowly got to know the women around her when they had to practice moves on each other and by the end she already felt more confident in her own abilities.
The self-defense classes were going really well. Kate had a lot of new people in her weekly class, and was considering bringing in a second “teacher.” She didn’t charge for the classes, and therefore didn’t get paid for the program. She couldn’t offer anyone any monetary incentive to come in. But if she could split the group into sections, then the ladies who attended would get more one-on-one training.
Tonight it wasn’t too full. She tried to make contact with every student at least once before the end of the class, but had missed a couple in the back. So right after wrapping things up, while the students were gathering their things to head home, she headed back to there to introduce herself and check in.
“Hey,” Kate said, moving over. “This was your first class, right?”
Smiling and nodding Capable replied, “Hi, yes it was. You’re a wonderful teacher, you make sure we’re all relaxed and I certainly feel more confident already” she told the woman honestly, “Oh I’m Capable by the way, it’s nice to meet you. It’s so good of you to do this” she added because she’d never imagined she’d find a free class, she’d be happy to pay.
“Aww, thanks.” Kate said, giving the new student a grin. She reached forward and shook the woman’s hand, too. Capable. Great name, she thought. “It’s the least I can do. I have had personal experiences I don’t want anyone else to go through. So if I can give other women the means to protect themselves? You’d better believe I’m gonna do it. Actually, I’ve been trying to work out a teenage class, but it’s harder than you’d think.”
“That’s lovely, and very good of you too” Capable said, “Oh, have you tried getting in touch with the local schools? That might be a good way to get to the younger girls” she suggested, she knew Tessa worked with schools with it came to reading lists and things like that so it might work well for Kate too.
“Yeah, I have to have all kinds of licensing and insurance to be able to go this kind of thing at schools. Actually, a lot of places insist that I have insurance.” Kate frowned. “I wonder if there’s another way that I can get in touch with younger girls.”
“Oh that’s such a shame. Hmm maybe community centres or after school groups? You could advertise at those even if you can’t do anything there?” she questioned, “I work at a bookstore and we’d be happy to put up any posters or anything you have”
“Yeah?” Kate asked, breaking into a grin. “Well, that sounds great. I bet there are a lot of local places that would advertise for me. And the community center has been so great about letting us use the space. Maybe if I put out a donation box, we could actually pay the place something for use of the room.”
“I am sure there are” Capable agreed, “There’s a lovely sense of community here, I am sure a donation box would be welcomed. I know I’d certainly pay to attend your classes, you’re an incredible teacher”
Kate flushed. It was really nice to hear that she was doing well, that she was making a difference in people’s lives. She wanted to make sure people were safe, or at the very least that they were doing everything they could to try and protect themselves. “Thank you so much! It means a lot to me to know that you appreciate it.”
“You’re welcome. Thank you for doing it, it’s nice to know there are still good people in the world who want to help and empower others” Capable smiled, very glad she had come along to the class.
