Merlin wasn’t hopeless in the kitchen but he definitely wasn’t as good as his wife, but then not many people could claim that. She was impressive and not just with baking. However he was an expert at following instructions and so cooking together was something they tried to do on a semi-regular basis. Just like their date nights it was nice to spend time together, watching movies was great but there wasn’t much chance to talk then. Cooking however gave them plenty of chances.
Cooking together was pretty amazing. Audrey was glad that she’d found a life partner who was interested in the things she was interested in. For the most part. She’d brought home some risotto, some mushrooms from the farmer’s market, and a nice bottle of wine they could sip while they cooked. It was nice that they had time after the kids were in bed to spend together--more that they made time together.
She refilled the wine glasses while the risotto was slowly cooking on the stove. “Should we eat something green, too?”
“I think we have some spinach in the fridge, could we throw that in?” Merlin suggested, risotto wasn’t really something you could eat with salad but throwing in something green could work. Spinach or asparagus worked the best, in Merlin’s opinion anyway.
“Oh, that’s a wonderful idea!” They’d already put onions and mushrooms in the risotto, but it could go for more veggies. And Audrey was already planning a quick dessert for after the main course. They had Crème fraîche in the fridge, along with fresh berries and ladyfingers… she could make a little trifle out of them. And there was some booze she could drizzle on, too.
“Would you mind grabbing it?” She asked, stirring the rice.
The fact that Audrey had planned out a dessert already went to show how much of a cooks mind she had. It would never have occurred to Merlin that they could do a quick trifle, that’s the kind of thing he’d have to plan.
“Sure” he nodded, moving to do just that, washing it under the tap.
Audrey would argue that it was all a matter of having the right ingredients in the house, all at a cook’s fingertips. Well, that and knowing what flavors went well together. But the fact was that she enjoyed cooking. She enjoyed experimenting. Hopefully tonight would be a good experiment.
“Thanks, babe.” She gave him a smile over her shoulder as he worked at the kitchen sink. “Can you get out the berries from the fridge, too? They should be rinsed. For dessert.”
“You got it” he said, retrieving the greens and berries. “Have you heard from the tv network yet?” he asked her, they’d be mad to turn them down in his opinion. Audrey was an engaging friendly woman and Izzy was as confident and capable too. They’d outshine anybody if given a chance.
“Not yet. Soon, I hope,” Audrey said, turning back to the risotto. She stirred, then put the lid on, letting it cook slowly. It looked and smelled absolutely amazing. Onions sweet, mushrooms savory, with just enough seasoning to bring out the richness of the flavors. She turned around and dusted her hands on a cloth, watching Merlin at the sink. “Izzy and I are planning on practicing a bit this weekend. We’ve got to make sure we’re prepared for anything they throw at us.”
“I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you. Though I am sure it won’t be long before they’re on the phone” Merlin assured her. “Good idea, you girls will be amazing. It actually makes me look forward to watching the show” he teased her with a grin. Turning off the tap and passing over the greens. She knew he didn’t really mind watching the cookery shows she liked, especially with her added commentary. It rather amused him.
Audrey grinned softly. “I hope you’re right.” She loved how proud her husband was of her. “I know it’ll be such a chore to have to watch one silly episode.” She teased him, leaning in close against him again. She accepted the greens, then leaned over and pressed a kiss against the side of his neck. Then, quick as a wink, she headed back across the kitchen to dry the greens and drop them into the risotto.
Merlin chuckled, “One episode that we’ll make everybody watch when they come to visit” he amended, giving her a bum swat as she walked by.
Audrey snorted. “I’d better not get flour in my hair, or anything.” She gave a little laugh at the swat to her backside, and skipped a bit in the kitchen. The risotto was smelling so good, Audrey’s stomach gave an audible growl.
“Hungry?” Merlin asked her, winking when his own stomach growled in response, “Me too” he added with a laugh. It wasn’t an unusual sound in their home, the smells from the kitchen were too good and Merlin would bet anybody they wouldn’t be able to stop their tummy’s from rumbling.
With a little laugh, Audrey nodded. “Is it that obvious?” But then his stomach grumbled, too! It made her laugh again. “Well, aren’t we quite the pair? I think it’s ready, anyway.” She pulled a couple of plates out so she could dish up the deliciousness. “You want to pour some drinks?”
“I can definitely do that” he said with a smile, moving to grab them some cool drinks to enjoy with their meal. Their teamwork was obvious to any observers as they moved around the kitchen, moving around each other almost like a dance.
Audrey stopped by the table so she could wrap her husband in her arms and kiss him. It was the perfect evening for them to spend together.
