It was really weird to be back in Orange county. Sharon had arrived late last night, hopped into a hotel, and crashed. First thing in the morning, she’d sent a text to her friend Veronica. The pair hadn’t seen each other since Sharon left for England, and Sharon couldn’t wait to catch up with Veronica’s beautiful, baby boy. They made plans to meet up for coffee later in the day.
Unfortunately, Sharon’s homecoming was a little earlier than expected, so there was someone still subletting her apartment. Coming home early wasn’t costing her that much, though, as the amount she was getting in rent more than covered the cost for her storage unit and hotel. It just meant that she wasn’t going to get to “go home” for another week.
She headed to the cafe after a shower and change of clothes, feeling really good.
Going out was still a bit of a chore for Veronica. There was so much to pack up and bring with her. But it was good for Liam and coffee was definitely a necessity. Plus she couldn’t exactly pass up seeing Sharon. Especially when she had been gone for weeks.
Veronica arrived at the cafe with Liam and his diaper bag in tow. Liam was strapped to her chest in one of those baby carriers, something Veronica was still shocked at herself that she actually, let alone wore. It made things easier though. She spotted Sharon right away and made her way over to her friend. “Hey,” she greeted with a smile.
Sharon had been sitting at a table near the pick-up counter when Veronica came into the cafe. She jumped up to her feet, grinning brightly, and stepped forward to wrap her arms around her friend. (Gently, though, around both Veronica and Liam.) “Hey!” She released her friend, and stepped back so they could sit at the table. “How are you? And how’s my big boy?” She added, turning to the baby.
She returned Sharon’s hug. It had been way too long, before taking a seat. She did need coffee but she would wait until the line was a bit shorter. “We are both good. Exhausted but good,” Veronica replied honestly. “Nothing too exciting here just lots of shit,” literally. “I’ve slowly been taking a few cases.” Mostly ones she could do from home. “But I want to hear about you. Tell me about London.”
“Aww, I’m so glad things are good! Hopefully you’ll both be sleeping through the night.” Sharon leaned over to run her fingertips very gently over her Godson’s cheek. “Oh… Well, there isn’t much to tell, I’m afraid.” She led the way into the living room area so the pair could sit comfortably on the sofa. “Peggy’s doing very well. We got to do quite a bit of sight-seeing while i was there. Honestly, I felt a little foolish wandering around the pubs and streets of London when I should have been here with you guys.”
“It was a little ridiculous,” Veronica commented with a smirk. “I mean I had a baby.” She was mostly teasing. Sharon had been there for the birth. It wasn’t like there was much she could do after. Veronica barely let anyone else hold Liam.
Sharon would have been around more, but her family called for her to come and visit. And Veronica and Liam really just needed to stay home together, sleep, eat, shit, and bond. They didn’t need Sharon for that. The more important stuff was coming up, and Sharon would definitely be around for it now. “I know, it was very selfish of me to go.” She grinned. “How are you really? Surviving?”
“I don’t know how you can live with yourself after that,” she joked. “Surviving on very little sleep, but surviving.” Liam was worth it though. She smiled down at her little boy. The fact that she was a mom was still such a strange concept for her, but she was enjoying it more than she thought. “I’ve started taking on a few cases.” Slowly getting back into work.
“I figured my two options were harikari and return home to beg forgiveness.” Sharon grinned again, but then her eyes went slightly wide. “Wow, you’ve gone back to work already?” Then again, it shouldn’t have been such a surprise. Veronica was the kind that would absolutely get her life back to some semblance of normalcy as fast as possible after the birth of her child. “I mean, that’s amazing! ...How are you doing childcare? Or do you take him with you to work?”
“Well this is the better option,” Veronica commented back with a smirk. “I’ve just been taking a few cases. Mostly stuff I can do from home.” A lot of PI work could be done a computer or with a few phone calls. You just had to have the right skill set. “When I’ve had to go on a stakeout,” or set a trap, “Logan has been home.” It was working out. Keith was always around too. He was so excited about being a grandpa.
“That’s great! I’m just… I’m really in awe. I knew you were absolutely amazing, but I had no idea how strong you are.” Sharon couldn’t imagine going back to work--almost any kind of work--so soon after having a baby. Then again, Veronica was one of the most willful and determined people she’d ever met, so it shouldn’t have been that much of a surprise. “You two make quite a team.” She was impressed. Pleased. Happy for Veronica and Logan and their little Liam. It was wonderful to see.
“Thanks.” It was weird for her to be complemented. She didn’t usually take them well. Even weirder for them to be about her parenting skills. “I don’t think I could do it without coffee,” she joked. But speaking of, the line looked shorter now. “Which I need to go get.”
“Oh, yes. Coffee.” Sharon said, smiling. She lifted her own, half-empty cup as if in a toast. “I’ll be right here when you get back.” The pick-up counter was right beside them, so Veronica could simply wait at the table for the barista to make her drink.
Veronica got in line, Liam still on her chest, ordering herself a latte with an extra shot of espresso. Once that was taken care of she sat back down at the table. “How’s it feel to be back?” She asked, finally taking Liam out of the carrier.
“I gotta admit, it’s really weird.” Sharon watched Veronica pulled the baby out of the carrier with warmth. It was so nice to see her friend so happy. Maternal was a good look for Veronica. “But it’s a good kind of weird. I loved spending time with Peggy, and now I’m back to normal. Whatever normal is.”
“I don’t think normal exists in this place,” Veronica admitted with a smirk. Now that she had Liam, maybe Orange County wasn’t the best place for her. But she didn’t think she could imagine living anywhere else. Besides, it would get boring.
“That’s a very good point.” Sharon agreed. After the things she’d seen, she wasn’t sure that she could live anywhere else. Staying in London wasn’t doing it for her, that was for sure. She missed this place like she couldn’t put into words.
“I’m back now. Back for good, I think.” Sharon added with a grin. “So I’m around if you need me to babysit.”
