Even though fall classes didn’t start until the end of September, Ruby was using one of her days off from her internship to get some of her textbooks, as well as to talk with her academic advisor as she had already started her internship and needed to turn in her papers and convince her advisor that she would be fine with her workload as there was always some form of concern given the fact she was the youngest in her class. Which was nice but really not all the necessary according to Ruby, she had it all under control.
So what if the books she had needed to buy because there weren’t cheaper alternatives on Chegg or Amazon currently were heavy and blocking her vision? That was just books. And she could go bother Uncle Qrow to see about getting a ride home because of said books. She was pretty sure he would be in his office. Hopefully?
Of course in typical Ruby fashion as she was trying to juggle her books, she instead tripped over her own feet on her walk towards the history building.
Becoming a TA hadn’t actually been something Blossom expected to do, but with Professor Constantine’s class, she was more than willing to launch herself into it. It also meant on campus housing, which Blossom hadn’t thought she’d need but ended up taking anyway. The single dorm would be perfect for her really, and she was excited for the new class year.
She didn’t even mind being on campus early to move in and get the last of her paperwork processed before she could start working on the coming year. Wandering across the campus, enjoying the day, Blossom was only a little to the side when she spotted the other girl starting to trip. Books were about to hit the deck, and those suckers could be expensive.
Since she wasn’t going to be able to help the tripping girl without her abilities causing a little bit of a ruckus, Blossom opted to catch the falling textbooks, hoping the girl didn’t hurt herself too much instead.
Stupid tall books that blocked the view and were heavy. But that came with being a mechanical engineering student in their last year. At least Weiss wasn’t here to make some comment about how she was a complete klutz. She was hoping things would mellow out between them but she wasn’t sure how and that would just make it worse right now.
Still, it seemed some of the Huntress training was already kicking in. Even if she had still fallen, she managed to somehow salvage it with a roll so that there wasn’t any damage done to her knees, stopping and pushing herself up seemingly shocked she had managed the move.
“Woah, cool…”
The comment was murmured to herself before the nineteen year old realized that she hadn’t saved her books and looked around to start catching them only to notice Blossom with them.
“Hi! Thank you so much. I’m so sorry.” Because speaking quickly and on one breath was the normal thing to do, really. It was for Ruby at any rate.
The tumble into a stand was pretty cool, and Blossom counted it as a win that the girl knew how to stop herself from getting too badly hurt, while Blossom rescued the books. Teamwork without thinking on it. That was cool.
“Hey, don’t worry about it.” Blossom’s reflexes and strength meant it was barely anything to think about, no harm done to anyone or anything, thank goodness. “I’m glad you managed to roll there, skint knees are no fun at all.” Not that Blossom had to worry about those anymore. She could get knocked into a building and come out with just a squint headband.
“Are you definitely okay?”
Apparently Ruby was good at the teamwork thing in the Dreams even if she had always been more comfortable working alone, she had been named team leader for Team RWBY after all and had managed to coordinate a group attack on the spot. So unexpected teamwork with someone when it came to saving books? Maybe not so strange. She certainly wasn’t thinking too much about it.
“They really aren’t. But yep, definitely okay!” She was going to figure out how she had managed to act on reflex as if she’d actually gone to Signal Academy and trained with her uncle and dad to be a Huntress later.
“Sorry if my books are heavy, I can take them back now.” Because she didn’t want anyone to strain or anything like that on her account.
“Oh, sure, but they’re not any problem at all.” Super strength had the added benefit of not letting Blossom care about a single thing when it came to weights, she’d lifted her own car once to get dropped keys. But she didn’t want to boggart the other girl’s books.
“I take it you’re signing up for classes?” It was usually a safe bet to assume someone was at least attending college if they were wandering the campus with books.
“Are you sure?” Because it wasn’t like Ruby couldn’t handle the books on her own. Now she just felt awkward which admittedly was a default reaction for her when talking with new people. Sometimes it worked out fine, like with Blake. Other times? It really didn’t turn out fine. But that was life.
“Nope, I’m already signed up for my classes, I needed to drop off paperwork for my internship since it’s my last year so I figured I’d get my books while I was here and then go see if my uncle was in his office.”
True, Ruby didn’t look like she should be of graduating age, she was closer to an incoming freshman. But it was what it was.
“How about we half it? And I can walk you over?” Sharing the load seemed like the best solution in Blossom’s mind. She was just the sort to change her plans at a moments notice just to help someone else out, even if just for a while.
“Oh, the books are always the important part, but it can be so tedious getting them. One of my classes this year thankfully has an eBook for the course work.” Super strength or not, she went through a few backpacks a year because of her textbooks. “What internship are you doing?” Blossom might’ve been fooled by the other girl’s appearance, but she wasn’t about to make a fuss out of her looking so young. Because some people were smarter than others, and sometimes ages weren’t the matter in class either.
“I’m Blossom, by the way, and I’ll totally walk you to your building for meeting your uncle if you want?” Boundaries, Blossom was learning what they were too.
“That sounds great! Thanks!” Smiling, Ruby took half of the books. If Blossom was okay with it, then she wouldn’t put up too much a fuss. All she wanted was to be treated like normal people despite being the youngest in her class and the nonsense that sometimes came with that which at least she was usually good at ignoring.
“They really are. And that’s good! I’ve been lucky finding books to rent on Chegg and everything but sometimes you just need to buy them from the bookstore.” Usually for the special editions that a particular professor wanted. But she’d long since figured out how to manage finding books for the cheapest solution. “I’m interning at Future Industries.” Which still seemed shocking to Ruby even though she’d been there since the end of the previous school year since she’d met Asami at the awards for the engineering department.
“It’s nice meeting you, Blossom, I’m Ruby! And yep, that’s fine by me!” Despite her social awkwardness, Ruby was generally friendly and upbeat once she got over the initial internal flailing that was normal for her.
Heading in the direction Ruby had previously been going in, Blossom had strategically managed to get the heavier of the books, since it didn’t bother her at all. “Future Industries sounds amazing, I hear that the CEO there is a really awesome woman.” And Blossom was a fan of powerful women in places of power without it going to their heads.
Someone not like Sedusa really.
“So, you’re an engineer?” She didn’t want to trivialise it, or make it seem like she was just guessing, but the assumption came based on Future Industries and internships. Blossom hadn’t snooped at the book titles just yet after all.
Ruby was completely oblivious to the way Blossom had managed the books and instead nodded excitedly. “It is, she’s really great. I mean especially since she focuses on women in STEM.” After all, there was still a lot of sexism in the industry. Even with students she got crap from some of her male peers because she did better than them in classes. Which wasn’t her fault.
“Yep, mechanical engineer to be exact.” There were the different areas of study in the engineering program after all. But all were important. She just liked to build things, add in the dreams where she was really into weapons and how they were constructed. “What about you?”
There was definitely a good strong focus in the area for women in both business and science in the area, and Blossom was oh so glad of it too. Because Future Industries and Stark Enterprises were so good about employing local and not being gender bias. It did give Blossom a good feeling for when she eventually decided on what she wanted to do with her life.
“That’s really cool! I’ll bet that you’ll have so much to do and learn at Future Industries.” An internship there was probably the coolest too. “I’m a biomolecular engineering student, but I’m TA-ing with my Occult Studies class.” Because she was hoping, one day, to merge magic and science. Somehow.
Ruby was happy to see companies becoming more welcoming of female engineers. So many things remained so gender split up that it could be frustrating to deal with. Even so, she found a way to keep going despite it all and look forward to building things and making things better for people.
“I’m excited. It’s been great so far and I’m sure it will continue to be.” And another engineering student! Different branch but that didn’t mean much. Ruby just thought it was cool that they both were involved in engineering in some capacity. “Wow, that’s a very broad range but it sounds really neat too.”
“My dad’s a physicist and chemist, so it seemed logical to go into sciences,” and she’d been very aware of medical science and the need for furthering the biomolecular branch of research. And it seemed like a good balance for her and the Professor. “But the Occult Studies class here is really amazing, and… you know with Orange County.” Blossom just shrugged a little, because it made sense to want to understand what was going on around here, and Professor Constantine was just an amazingly engaging teacher, even with his grumpy demeanour.
Blossom liked the steady mix, it kept her engaged, stopped her from shooting on ahead and then getting sidetracked, she sometimes needed the little something to focus on after all.
“That makes sense. I think that’s why my sister got into fighting and martial arts before her accident, since it’s what our dad does.” More now though he did still have those days but Ruby didn’t think much about those days. When they happened, she was there for him and she worried but it was just part of life. Still, she had never taken Occult Studies so she could just nod some at the comment about Orange County. She was getting a better grasp of it, the things she had never paid much attention to but now seemed like they meant more.
“I get that.” She’d like to be fully prepared for things but Ruby also was the type who would run head first into conflict to help people even without all the information. So for her, it was more along she could understand the theory behind the reasoning, as when the time came she would just jump head first into anything.
“I think this place is a really great mix of a whole bunch of people, and it’s really fun to figure things out, you know? Like a proper mishmash of everything.” And in some ways, Orange County really needed to be like that. With all the dreamers, and all the strange things that happened. It was important that a lot of people could buddy together with different skill sets and work together.
With their joint destination coming up, Blossom shuffled the books again, hoping that Ruby would be okay for the last little bit herself.
“Yeah, I can definitely see that.” She might feel awkward talking to people, but she could definitely see how it would fun to figure out all the things that happened and the different things people dreamt might play into it. Not so much her particular focus as she mostly just liked helping people and wanted to make the world a better place, but she definitely could see the appeal.
As she was given the rest of her books, Ruby smiled and shifted to maintain the balance.
“Thanks for your help, Blossom!”
And with that she headed towards Qrow’s office, humming happily to herself.
