If it wasn’t for Freya and his niece Klaus might have left Orange County already. He couldn’t stand being so close to his parents, even if he had successfully avoided them so far. There was also the fact that Rebekah was due back any day now. It would be nice to see his little sister too. But mostly it was Freya. With her being off in Europe and him being in New Orleans he didn’t often get to see her. Her visits were quick and usually remained in Orange County where the majority of the family was. So yes, Klaus was monopolizing as much of her time as he could.
Klaus was currently nursing a bourbon. His intake of alcohol had gone up quite a bit recently. With the loss of his gallery and being in the same area of his parents, he needed a drink… often. “Do you plan on returning to Kiev?” he asked his sister curiously. Both for the fact that he did want to know how long she would be around, and also because her work took her to such different places, he was interested to hear where she would be next.
Freya was still trying to wrap her head around what Elijah had told her and what she had pieced together. Somehow knowing she was dead in these mythical dreams was harder to accept than her brother being a vampire. Still, she wasn’t letting it get her down, there was too much to focus on and at the end of the day? There wasn’t anything she could do about what she had learned. So best to just focus on other things. Nor did she mind Klaus monopolizing her time. It had been a long time since she’d seen him for more than a few days. Any of her siblings really but with Klaus in New Orleans it had always been a bit harder.
Drink of choice that night was a red wine.
“I’m not sure. Mostly I’m just looking to see what’s out there and see where it takes me.” It was rare Freya ever took two jobs in the same location, especially one after the other. Sometimes she returned to locations but never so soon. “It’s actually weird not having a job lined up right away, I’m not quite sure what to do with myself. Probably why I agreed to help Percy with his non-profit.”
Not even in town a week and she had already signed on to a project. Yes it was to help a friend, but it was typical Freya in always needing something to do.
“Ah yes, the non-profit you learned about on that dream network?” There were other things on that network, like Freya had mentioned it was good for recommendations and it was apparently giving her a reason for sticking around a bit. “What exactly is this non-profit?” Klaus asked taking a sip of his drink. When Freya first mentioned it Klaus had been more curious about the network to ask too many questions. But now? Of course he wanted to know what his sister was up to. As tough as Klaus acted he truly did care about his siblings.
If Freya had known then what she did now about the network and the dreams, she wouldn’t have mentioned it. However, it was too late for that and all she could do was hope that Klaus wouldn’t have to deal with the dreams. Then again since as far as she knew he was only there for a visit as well, she figured he’d be okay. Hopefully.
“It will be to help women and children in the area who need it. Getting away from abuse, provide opportunity and safety. That sort of thing.”
So right up the alley of work Freya did when she was working with UN Women or Vital Voices.
Niklaus admired the work his sister did. Especially when it came to abuse, specifically child abuse. Although he never talked about that part of his life, the things Mikael did to him, his family knew. They had witnessed it. He didn’t blame them for not doing much back then. Mikael was terrifying. And Klaus would take the beatings if it meant keeping the rest of his siblings from harm. However, the fact that now it was one of Freya’s main passions? Well, it meant a lot to him. Even if he would never admit it.
“An honorable cause,” was all he said on the matter with a slight nod of his head.
Freya had done her best back then, often learning after the fact but trying to use her place as Mikael’s favorite to try and make him see logic. It was never enough, something she always felt with all of her siblings, but she had tried. They all had in their own ways. But it was one of the things she focused on, it seemed that despite being close to Mikael, all the work she did was the complete antithesis to what he stood for. Which was fine by her, it was important work and someone had to do it.
“That it is. Timing seemed to work out that Percy would need help on it.” Taking a sip of her wine, Freya looked over to Klaus, “What about you? How’s the gallery doing?”
It was rather strange in the week they’d been able to see one another, not once had the gallery come up even though it was something that always came up on their calls when she was overseas. Freya did have to wonder if that was tied into what she had picked up the first time they ran into one another, though she supposed she was about to find out.
Klaus’s face darkened. It was a subject he’d been avoiding. Something he didn’t want to talk about, or even think about. His pride had kept him from telling anyone. And he would probably come up with some lie to tell the rest of his family. But Freya had always supported him, never judged. Truth be told he needed to confide in someone.
“It’s no longer mine,” he practically growled picking up his drink and finishing it off in one long swallow.
And she was right. Something had happened with the gallery that tied into Klaus’ sudden arrival and what he’d been keeping from her that first time they’d run into one another. But Freya was still shocked by what Klaus just said.
“What? How does that work?” She was pretty sure that both Klaus and his business partner had gone into the gallery together. Yes, she knew how her brother was and often chided him that just because he didn’t come up with an idea didn’t necessarily make it a bad idea. But nowhere in their conversations had she picked up on something that would cause Klaus to lose the gallery. Nothing like drop in revenue or anything of that nature.
Klaus signaled for another drink. He was going to need it if he was going to keep on with this conversation. “He stole it,” Klaus spat referring to his business partner of course. “Turned everyone against me. The artists, the clients. It’s his now.” You could hear the anger in his voice, rage even. One day Klaus would ruin him, but first he had to build himself back up again. Something he was certainly capable of doing.
That would explain Klaus’ sudden return to Orange County, but Freya was still shocked by what she was hearing. In some ways she couldn’t be completely surprised that his partner would feel frustrated if Klaus had continued to ignore his ideas, but they had also seemed close - or as close as anyone could be when it came to Klaus.
“Wow.”
Because really, there wasn’t much to say right now. It seemed that this was a week for all sorts of revelations she didn’t know how to respond to.
It was fine Freya didn’t have much to say about it. Klaus didn’t exactly want to elaborate. In Klaus’s mind he was always right, his ideas were better. His partner’s betrayal was in no way his fault. He deserved to be belittled, to have little say in the gallery and Niklaus certainly didn’t deserve to have it taken from him. It was because of him that it was a success, not his business partner he once thought of as a brother.
“It’s fine,” Klaus said as the next drink was put in front of him. That was clearly a lie, but he did have his pride. Freya may have gotten a glimpse of him defeated but Niklaus certainly wouldn’t stay that way for long. “It was time for me to move on anyway. Start a new gallery elsewhere.” A better gallery.
He was a Mikaelson, they were resilient, no matter what obstacle was thrown at them. That much was certain. So it was a setback, and a betrayal for someone who had enough issues trusting others as it were. And that was why Freya wasn’t completely convinced that it was fine as Klaus had put it.
“And that’s why you were seeking opinions on the network about art.”
Not a question. Freya knew Klaus, and it seemed to make more sense now that he’d ask. It wasn’t like her brother was known for his small talk. So picking a variety of minds for an art gallery that he would start up.
“Well, we can’t always stay in one place forever I guess.” Said the woman who was never in one area for over a year and a half.
Freya knew him well. There was no need to respond to her first statement since she already knew the answer to it. “You would certainly know that better than anyone,” Klaus commented smirk back on his face. While most of their family remained in Orange County, Freya seemed to always be traveling, for work. And Klaus? He may have gotten out but he stayed in the same place for the last eight years.
Picking up his glass he raised it in a mock toast. “To new beginnings.”
