It was a little strange being back in a city after all those months in the wilderness, not least because now that Tyler was acutely aware of the pulse beating in the people around him, but luckily for him, controlling his bloodlust wasn't much more difficult than controlling his anger, a skill that he had been practicing ever since he found out he was a werewolf over a year ago. He dates his hunger with the occasional snatch and erase, and other than that he was mostly enjoying his time back in the Orange County. He'd gone to see Blossom first thing when he'd come back, and was happy that he hadn't screwed things up as badly as he had first thought, and today he was going to to out and begin the long, arduous task of finding a job with his degree.
But not first without a coffee. He added his milk to the paper cup the barista had given him, and was turning to leave when he caught sight of the last face he had expected, or wanted to see. A burning feeling of hate and rage welled up from his stomach, and he started, struggling not to rip the heart out of the man who had ruined everything good he'd ever had in his dreams.
Niklaus had spent the previous night drinking with his sister. He had yet to contact the rest of his siblings, although he was planning on stopping by Elijah’s office to surprise his brother. But first, coffee.
Klaus was standing at the counter waiting for his espresso when he noticed someone staring at him, eyes full of anger. Klaus didn’t alway rub people the right way, but he couldn’t for the life of him place this man or think of why he would glare at him with such hate. “Can I help you?”
Tyler forced some of the more homicidal thoughts running through his head back down. He had to force himself to remember that the Klaus standing in front of him had never killed him, turned him into a vampire, got him to nearly kill his girlfriend just so Klaus could save her, kill Tyler’s mother, and then sleep with said girlfriend.
“Uh, sorry,” he said, wondering how long exactly Klaus had been in the Orange County. Had he started dreaming yet, or was he ever going to? “I must have thought you were someone else.”
Well that was odd. “Clearly someone you aren’t happy with.” Klaus commented stating his observation. “I’d hate to be that guy,” he smirked. See, he could do small talk. And for some reason people thought he was unlikable.
Tyler knew that he should just nod and leave, maybe fill Stefan in on the OCs newest arrival. But he had to admit that he was compelled. Damon was still a dick, but he wasn’t a psycho like he was in the dreams. Anyway, it would probably be better to take stock about what this Klaus was like before he told much of anyone.
“Yeah, you could say that. I’m Tyler,” he shifted his coffee to his left hand and offered his hand to the man. “You from around here?”
“Niklaus,” he replied shaking the man’s hand just as the barista called out Nik, which was also him. He was a man of many names. He grabbed his drink before answering Tyler’s question. “In a way,” he shrugged taking a sip of his drink. “It’s been about ten years.” He considered New Orleans his home way more than Orange County ever was. But he couldn’t go back there, for now.
Tyler’s relief almost showed on his face. Not that a name was really something to get relieved about, but it would be a whole lot easier to separate the Klaus from his dreams from the one in front of him if he could call him a different name. “Oh yeah, just stopping by to visit family or something?” Tyler asked. He was well aware that there were a few of the Mikaelsons in the county. Maybe if he was lucky Klaus - or rather, Nik - would be gone in just a few days.
Niklaus also went by Klaus. That just wasn’t the name he gave to baristas considering they never got it right. Granted they also spelled Nik with a c in it but it was at least a more common name. “Something like that.” Visit family, regroup, perhaps stay awhile. He did have a niece now and one of his sisters was apparently getting married. Not to mention that the other was also in town and Klaus didn’t get to see Freya nearly enough.
“And you?” He assumed Tyler was not from here given how he seemed shocked to see the man Klaus apparently looked like. If they were both from the area it wouldn’t be a shock.
Tyler actually smiled at that. Good, let Klaus see his family and take off, never to be heard from again. Maybe he’d leave without ever having experiencing one of the dreams. “I’m from here. I’ve been out of town the last few months, but I’m back now.”
“And this person you dislike is from out of town?” Klaus wasn’t exactly why he was so curious about the man, but he was. Perhaps it had to do with they way Tyler had been staring at him. Yeah, that had to be it.
“Yeah,” Tyler said. “He comes from Norway or something like that. Slept with my girlfriend.” Which was kind of true, even if he and Caroline had never had much more than a fling back in high school in real life. But that was definitely the easier explanation to swallow. He couldn’t really say ‘he forced me to nearly kill my girlfriend just so he could save her, murdered my mother, and then slept with said girlfriend, all in a series of dreams I had.’
“Sounds like a real asshole,” Klaus commented. Although he wasn’t entirely beyond sleeping with other people’s girlfriends. If they wanted to cheat that was their choice. He didn’t really give a fuck.
Tyler’s smile widened just a little, if only for irony’s sake. “Yeah, he really is. Well, Nik,” the name seemed kind of weird in Tyler’s mouth, but he was sure he’d get used to it soon enough. “How long are you planning on staying in town for?”
“You can call me Klaus,” it was the name he usually went by anyway. As for his next question Klaus wasn’t entirely sure what to think. Why did this guy care how long he was staying in town. They had just met and would probably never see each other again, no matter how long he stayed in town for. “As long as I feel like.”
“Right, Klaus,” Tyler muttered, not entirely happy with the idea, but it wasn’t like he could insist on calling someone he just met by a different name. He probably shouldn’t have expected Klaus to give him a straight answer. Whether he was a homicidal maniac or not, it wasn’t like Klaus would ever actually be friendly. “Fair enough, I guess. But I should probably take off. Maybe I’ll see you around sometime.”
“Perhaps,” Klaus replied although he highly doubted it. Orange County wasn’t exactly a small place. “Hope you don’t run into that guy,” he added before exiting the coffee shop himself. It was time to go surprise his brother.
