Who: Mikaelson bros (Klaus and Elijah) What: Klaus surprises his brother When: Today! (afternoon) Where: Elijah's office Rating/Warnings: Low Status: Complete
Now that Niklaus was back in Orange County it was inevitable that he would see his family. He had already bumped into Freya the previous evening. That was a definite surprise given not only had he been waiting to contact his siblings, he also assumed she was still in Kiev. It was only a matter of time before the rest of his family learned of his return. He might as well surprise them while he still had a chance.
Lucky for him when Nik entered the museum Elijah worked at his brother was distracted, overseeing a new collection that Niklaus was easily able to sneak into his office without being seen. Once inside he took a seat at his brother’s desk waiting for him to return. A smirk crossed his face as he heard the door open, but he remained silent waiting for Elijah to speak first.
With his sister back in town, Elijah had spent the night at Ezio’s place. Not that he had a problem with his sister, but he was doing her a favor by not being wildly inappropriate while she was staying with him. She likely did not want to be privvy to most of the stuff that went on there. Even if she probably wouldn’t have been entirely surprised by the information. He preferred to at least attempt to be polite.
So today, when he’d come into work, he didn’t know anything of Freya and Niklaus running into each other or even the fact that his brother was in town. There were always things to oversee and meetings to attend or people to talk to, so it was easy to be distracted. But things had settled down and Elijah was intending to go on a lunch break, which meant grabbing a few things from his office.
“Niklaus.” Surprises, it seemed, were quite a lot more common than he knew. First Freya, now this. “I didn’t realize you were in town.” Add another person to the list of people that he needed to mention to Ezio...and Katherine. “When did you get here?”
“Try to contain your excitement,” Klaus cracked, a smug smile on his face. “About an hour ago.” Of course he knew Elijah was referring to when he got back to town, but Klaus couldn’t help himself.
“Apparently I’m not the only sibling that’s returned,” he added still a little bitter about the fact no one told him Freya had returned. It didn’t matter that it had been his own choice to separate from his family years ago. There was always going to be that paranoia about being left out.
“My surprise took over.” He gave his brother a smile, trying to let the surprise dissipate. When Klaus responded, he rolled his eyes. “I’m sure you did not arrive in town just an hour ago only to come see me the moment you did. Even if such a reality would be somewhat flattering.” He could play the light and airy card if he wanted, but he was serious in that he didn’t believe his brother would come see him first thing. Something that was proven by his next statement.
“No. You are not the only one. But you are no less welcome. Do you have somewhere to stay?” Because he would open his home to his siblings no matter dream complications held. Even if it would be a little cramped and would definitely involve him texting Ezio so he could sleep over more often.
Niklaus suppressed an eyeroll. Of course Elijah wasn’t in the mood for jokes. It was a rare occasion that his brother ever did take things lightly. “Got to town yesterday,” he answered honestly. Elijah was right though, visiting him first thing wasn’t his top priority. He had needed a moment to adjust before contacting any of his siblings. “Ran into our dear sister at a bar. Would have been nice if someone had bothered to tell me she was back in the states.” Okay so maybe Klaus was still a little bitter about that.
“I have a room.” At a motel, it was about all he could afford at the moment after his business partner basically took everything from him. He wasn’t about to tell Elijah that though, Klaus had his pride after all.
Yesterday. He would have to text Katherine once he knew that Niklaus wasn’t around. “She only just got here herself.” He resisted the urge to remind Niklaus that they all had things going on outside of him. It wouldn’t do to antagonize his brother. “Forgive us for not mentioning it earlier.” He would make a note to be more mindful about telling him things in the future to avoid moments like these. Perhaps.
“All right.” He searched his mind for something to talk about. “Perhaps a couple of us can get together for dinner. If you would be interested.” It would not really do to exclude anyone...except their parents. “Just us siblings.” Later he’d plan something with Ezio and his siblings, but that was for later. Once he was sure if it was going to be a good idea. A pause. “I should probably let you know that Katherine is in town. She has been for a while.” Because while he would warn Katherine about Klaus, he figured letting his brother know would result in less drama later on. “I’m not sure there’s anything else of note. I’ll introduce you to Ezio before too long. I haven’t spoken to Mother and Father in some time, so I have no updates there.”
This was the family dynamic that he did not miss. It wasn’t his siblings that he left, but being away from them for so long it helped with the paranoia of being left out, of being less than. When he was away and shit went down he was detached from it, out of sight out of mind, but now? He was back and so was that paranoia. Still, Klaus replied, “You’re forgiven.” This time he added in his head. He didn’t want to start a fight with his brother, not when he had just returned.
It would have to be just the siblings. Klaus refused to have anything to do with his parents. Although hearing Elijah also hadn’t spoken to them in awhile did bring a small smile to Niklaus’s face. “I could go for a sibling gathering,” he agreed. As for the rest of the news, he didn’t have a comment on Katherine. He appreciated the warning but he was over that fling. As long as Elijah wasn’t fucking her he didn’t give a shit. Which he knew his brother wasn’t given is new boyfriend. “Just how long is too long? I need to meet this man who captured my brother’s heart.”
“Thank you.” Because Klaus was not the only one that didn’t wish to start a fight so early. It would color the rest of his day and he wasn’t sure what to do with the information outside of things he wasn’t sure he wanted to do. At least he didn’t need to worry about that.
Having a boyfriend was not the sort of information that his father had wanted to accept and their mother had simply preferred to pretend it wasn’t what it was. Elijah didn’t need the annoyance. “Then we’ll set something up.” Something where at least three of them would be pretending their food preferences were the same as the other two. He made a mental note to talk with Kol and Rebekah about Klaus as well. No revealing things that didn’t need to be revealed. “I have to talk to him and see when he’s free. It is easier now that he doesn’t have classes, but I believe those will be starting up again soon.” The smile that came when he talked about Ezio was likely very telling of his feelings. “He teaches art history. I’m sure you’ll get along just fine.” If one ignored the stuff from the dreams and he would do his best to make sure Ezio forgot. They didn’t have to be who they were in the dreams, so Klaus deserved that chance, too.
“I like him already,” Klaus smirked. Anyone who was interested in art, Klaus could get along with… probably. As much as Klaus could get along with someone, really. But now that the greeting and pleasantries were settled it was time for some much overdue brotherly bonding. “Let’s get out of here.” He didn’t care if it was the middle of the day and Elijah probably had more work to do. That could wait. “It’s time we tear up this place.”
