Who: Blake and Ruby
What: Reading Picnic! Turned into vague discussion about dreams
When: Late June/Early July (before Ruby and Weiss run into each other)
Where: Park
Warnings: Low
Status: Log | Complete
The dreams were definitely strange and Ruby wasn’t quite sure if she was going to be zomgsupersharing like she saw a lot of people on the Network do. That and with her uncle there, that was a bit awkward. Yes, she could and would basically tell Qrow anything because she was close to him, but the dream thing? That she didn’t know and so for now she had asked Yang about them when she first had one but otherwise, mostly quiet on the dream front as it wasn’t like there was anything super interesting. Though she had a feeling that they had really only just begun.
But for now it was one of her reading picnics with Blake which were super fun in their own right. Because they were in the midst of a heat wave, instead of regular tea, Ruby had made sure that they had iced tea to fit with the weather. No need to die from heat by use of inappropriate drinks.
For now, she was happily munching on a cookie as she turned the page in the book she had brought for that day’s reading picnic.
Blake had also been very silent on the dream front. She’d only spoken to two people about them. One was her shrink, who also dreamt so that made it less awkward to discuss. Blake did sometimes go into detail about her dreams, though she kind of had to to explain where she was coming from. Not to mention that nagging feeling that she felt wrong without her cat ears and night vision.
The other person she’d talked about the dreams with had been Yang, but that had been less in detail, and more an acknowledgement that they shared the same dream world.
Now while Blake knew that Ruby was in her dreams, she didn’t know if Ruby had started dreaming yet or not. Though she had a feeling that if Ruby had dreamt of meeting her, she would have said something about it. Still, she really wanted to know what Ruby would think of her being a faunus. Her dreams had left off with the accidental reveal to Ruby, Weiss and Yang that she was faunus and she’d run off.
Blake set her book down to pour some ice tea. It was definitely needed considering the heat. She’d dressed for the heat as well, wearing a tanktop and shorts with her hair pulled back in a ponytail.
“Ruby,” she said as she picked up her glass of ice tea. “What do you think of people different than you? I mean, race-wise, sexuality-wise, whatever you want to fill in there.” Okay so somewhat awkward, but it was better than outright asking her thoughts on faunus.
Jean shorts, black tank top, flannel button up shirt that had been discarded because of the heat and her hair in braids as she didn’t have the same hairstyle as she did in the dreams. Then again, they were also older here than in the dreams. Perhaps she should tell Blake but since she didn’t know if she was dreaming, she didn’t want to seem even more weird and awkward than usual.
Still, she wasn’t expecting Blake to suddenly speak up and so she looked up from her book in confusion, nearly forgetting the cookie in her hand. But that was a random question. Okay so Ruby tended to just ask random questions in greeting so who was she to really talk about that?
“I don’t think it matters. Or I mean, it matters because it makes you who you are because of what you experience and all, but I mean…. I don’t see why it should or why people are so weird about it. We’re all different and that’s okay. Everyone still has a soul and spirit and squishy insides because we’re all people. That doesn’t change just because you might be a different race or gender or sexuality or religion and people who think it does aren’t that smart.”
Perhaps Blake should have expected that answer from Ruby. Ruby was ever the optimist, the one who didn’t seem to hate anyone in the history of ever. Blake admired that about Ruby, that she could keep such a positive outlook. Blake sometimes wished she could borrow just a small fraction of that for herself. She’d seen and experienced too much in both her dream life and this one to have much of her own left.
“It’s a good way to look at things, that we’re all people. I wish more people understood that.” But of course, people naturally feared anything that was different from themselves. And fear gave way to hate so easily. “I know it’s probably a random question to ask, but I’ve just had a lot on my mind of late.”
Both dream-wise and here. She had good days and bad days. Today was one of the good ones, or at least a better one. It also helped that being around Ruby like this was a calming influence and she could relax more than she otherwise could.
Ruby nodded in understanding. It would be nice if more people didn’t make things weird just because people were different. It shouldn’t matter if people were different, it was their actions that mattered. But Ruby was used to being told she had a different way of looking at things so she wasn’t all that shocked that most people didn’t think like she did.
“It’s okay.”
Pausing for a moment, Ruby shifted so that she was sitting cross legged and tilted her head to the side.
“What type of things? Is it dream related? I mean, only if you want to talk about it and if you haven’t had any weird dreams just forget I said anything because I swear I’m not that weird but yeah.”
Might as well put it out there. Just in case. She didn’t really expect Blake to say much more, she had basically disappeared after telling off the angry Dust Lady and then there was the night and there had almost been a moment but then angry Dust Lady and Blake blowing out the candle.
Blake couldn’t help a little smile at Ruby’s response. Unlike a lot of people in the dreams, Blake had always found Ruby to be endearing with her babbling and social awkwardness. She could relate, though for different reasons. Blake was actively hiding who she actually was from society and kept her distance because of it.
“Yes and no. Possibly moreso real-life things.” It was a white lie. Blake didn’t want to get into her dreams too much, especially when she didn’t know if Ruby had even started dreaming yet. And, well, she’d rather Yang be the first one to break the shared dreamworld thing to Ruby.
“I’m in therapy here because bad things have happened to me. Some days are better than others, but even on my good days I’m always thinking. Both about what my therapist tells me and about the things I’ve been through.” Blake also wouldn’t go into detail about the ex-boyfriend. Details about Scientology? Maybe, if only because the world at large knew so little about it that the average person couldn’t understand just how horrible it actually was. Blake would argue she’d suffered more abuse at the hands of Scientology than she did from her ex-boyfriend.
Ruby nodded some. She didn’t like that Blake had bad things happen to her. Yes she knew it was part of life, but that didn’t mean she had to be okay with it. Even if there was nothing she could do about it since it was the past, Ruby didn’t like those she cared about hurting. Okay so people in general didn’t like that.
“Well. That’s good that you’re getting help and aren’t dealing with the bad things on your own. And I can help however. I mean, I’m not trained or anything but I’ll still be there for you and do what I can so bad things don’t happen again.” Which admittedly had been the theme of the song lyrics she’d been sending at Blake when the singing thing had happened.
Blake didn’t want people to suffer like she had, but she knew the world wasn’t always, or hardly ever, fair. Some people would always have to suffer no matter what anyone did. Injustice happened, and Blake didn’t like it, but she was trying to not let her experience break her. Though some days she felt like it was breaking her, especially with the dreams piled on top of it.
“Thank you,” she responded at Ruby’s statement. Blake was touched, still getting used to this whole having friends thing. “I really appreciate that. I’m not used to having friends like that.” She was grateful to have Ruby and Yang in her life, even if she wasn’t always the best at being around people. Which was a thing she had in common with Ruby, and why she felt comfortable around her.
At least Blake seemed to take the comment in stride and didn’t think her weird. Much like her, Ruby wasn’t all that familiar or used to having friends and she was always worried that she would say something wrong or push them away by accident.
“Anytime, that’s what friends do. But I’m not used to it either, so I totally understand so you don’t need to worry about that with me.”
Did that make sense? Ruby hoped it made sense.
Blake smiled softly. “That’s probably why we get along so well, we both understand the lack of friends.” And she was glad for that. Sometimes Yang could be a little much, a little too socially-geared for Blake to handle, but she was trying. She needed to expand her horizons a little, her therapist had encouraged her in doing that.
Luckily some of her socializing was with Ruby with their reading picnics. It was something quiet and nice, and hey they were still around people and out of their respective living spaces. No one could complain about that!
“Probably!” Ruby liked to think so. She knew that her family worried about her tendencies to stick to herself but it was just how she was. Being around someone who understood that was good because it helped in easing her out of her shell some.
Smiling, she finished her tea and grabbed another cookie. Yep. Reading picnics were the best thing ever.
