“Morning.” Natasha smiled at Wanda as she took a seat at the table. It was still technically morning, even if they were meeting for lunch. She was in a good mood. No bad reports, good news on the domestic front. There was little for her to worry about. Her responsibilities hadn’t really changed, though she did really need some kind of secretary.
“Morning!” Wanda replied cheerily and smiled up at her friend as she sat down. Pushing a cup of coffee she’d bought at the Bakery towards her using her powers. “I got you a coffee, hope you don’t mind,” she smiled. “Everything ok?”
“Everything is fine. It’s surprising. Usually very few things are fine.” Natasha grinned again. “Though no one ever answers with the truth. Have you noticed that? They ask ‘how are you’ but they don’t ever want to hear when you’re not fine.”
Wanda frowned, confused by the changing directions of Nat’s body language and words. “Are you sure everything is ok? Can I help in any way?” she offered cautiously, watching Nat’s face for any further hints.
Nat raised her eyebrows. “Do I not seem fine? Or is my good mood that offputting? Except needing a secretary at work, everything is fine. More than fine. Waiting for the other shoe to drop good.”
Wanda let a slow smile spread on her face. “Do you have any specific skills or qualifications you are looking for with this secretary?” she asked with a grin on her face.
“Ability to keep a secret, file well, know how to bury bodies, and be able to type 60 words per minute.” Nat kept a straight face as she spoke. “I’m joking about the bodies.”
She smiled. “I handle those myself.”
Wanda chuckled and shook her head. “I am sure you do, but uh...I think I fulfill those other qualities,” she hesitated. “If you wanted that is,” she shrugged.
“We can give it a trial run?” Natasha was interested in the idea. It would keep Wanda closer and she’d also have an easier time when it came to making sure Wanda didn’t get deported. Having a cushy government job could go a long way to that.
“Are you sure?” Wanda asked cautiously, not quite believing that Nat would take her up on the offer as quickly as she did. “I’d love to work more closely with you,” she told her friend.
“If I wasn’t sure, I wouldn’t have agreed to it.” Nat reached over, taking Wanda’s hand. “Besides it might be fun. And it’ll be easier to keep you in the country.”
Wanda grinned broadly and shook Nat’s hand. A job working with her friend and mentor would be a great way to keep her occupied over the next few months and maybe she would pick up on some advice to help out in other ways. “Great! When do you need me to start?”
“How does Monday sound?” Natasha’s smile was wide and teasing. “Give it a chance to really sink in that you’re going to be my minion.”
“Sounds good to me, although you’re not expecting me to turn up on monday painted yellow and wearing dungarees are you?” Wanda joked.
Nat wasn’t sure she got the reference, but she laughed and shook her head. “Just business attire. If you need help getting something, let me know, I’ll cover it as part of the hiring perks.”
“Oh, I hadn’t thought about that,” Wanda considered her wardrobe briefly. Most of it was probably not suitable office attire. “I uh...might need to take you up on that actually,” she admitted shyly.
“It’s an excuse to go shopping, which I always need because I hate shopping.” Nat winked at her. “We’ll find you a few things. Black, and maybe a nice dark red.”
Because Wanda and red just went together.
Looking down at herself quickly, Wanda gave a little smile at her friend and shrugged. She didn’t spend a lot of time shopping or on fashion because she didn’t have the money and would generally rather be studying. “Ok, if you think I would look good in that,” she grinned, willing to trust her friend’s sense of fashion.
“You’ll look fantastic. We might as well get you some evening wear too. Part of the job sometimes involves fancy parties and slinky dresses.” Or maybe that was just Nat’s night job. She did like to groom her proteges.
