Tony didn’t always wander around the building aimlessly, but when he did, he often found himself swinging by IT to check in with Merlin. It was one of his favorite places to go, actually. He wasn’t in the way, like he might be in Engineering. He didn’t get bored out of his mind, like he might be in marketing or human resources. It was the perfect combination of interesting and inspiring.
He was carrying a large mug of coffee as he wandered through the department, saying hello to random employees and inspiring a whole lot of whispering in his wake.
Merlin didn’t mind Tony’s visits at all, he could understand the need for people sometimes but not any people. Geeky people tended to be the most accepting, though it was amusing how he always knew when Tony had appeared since the chatter died down a little and became a whisper instead.
“Hey boss” he called out from his office, the door like always was open.
Tony broke into a smile at the sight of Merlin standing in his office. Of course he’d noticed how the rest of the employees seemed to quiet when he walked around. It was strange, you’d think they’d never seen him before. Even after all these years, Tony was still getting used to this level of quasi-celebrity.
“Merlin!” He called out in response. “Are you busy?”
“Not too busy for you” he said, glancing at his team until they started chatting and working as normal. “Come on in, how can I help?” he asked.
“I wanted to check in with you about the upgrades.” Tony said, glad that the rest of the IT department was getting back to normal. He sipped from his coffee mug again as he headed into Merlin’s office. “Is everything prepared?”
“Everything is good to go, last delivery was yesterday so I had the team working on a plan to go floor by floor and I’ve been coordinating with the team leaders so we cause as little disruption as possible. Most of them are going to hold a team meeting while we switch up everything” Merlin reported in.
“Hey, that sounds good. I did see on the calendar how many team meetings were scheduled for tomorrow. Looks like,” he drew out his portable device and flicked his hand a few times, generating a small hologram with the building’s schedule on it. “Looks like they’re all staggered. Your team is going to have a really long day going floor by floor. Do you need any additional help?”
“Yeah, I imagine it looks pretty interesting on the schedule” Merlin chuckled before shaking his head, “Actually the team are looking forward to it. We’re nerds, we live for this kind of stuff” And if they started running behind Merlin had a magic trick or two up his sleeves.
“It makes a pretty picture.” Tony swiped his finger over the screen and it went dark, then he slid the device back into his pocket. “Really? I was going to say I could find another couple of hands to help out, but if you’ve got it covered…”
“I think we’re good, but thanks for the offer” Merlin said, it wasn’t the sort of thing they did every month and he knew his team were looking forward to it. It was the kind of thing that happened when you were in IT, the strangest things brought you joy.
“Sounds good. I’ve got a meeting at eleven, but I’ll check in with your lot around lunch time.” Tony sipped from his mug once more, glancing out at the sea of desks and cubicles, where Merlin’s team were stealing glances at the pair of them between hushed conversations and actual work. “Let me know if there’s anything else I can help with.”
“You’ll be the first to know” Merlin promised him, the whole team including Merlin were rather looking forward to it. There was nothing like a deadline computer challenge for a bunch of nerds to get the blood pumping.
Tony lifted his mug as if in a toast, then turned to head out of the IT department. He was pleased things were going so well for the upgrades. It wasn’t an easy job, but Merlin was magic.
