Audrey was outside, around the garage, staring down at the air conditioning unit. It was one of her days off, and she was struggling with the heat. Thankfully, both Ben and Bea were down for their naps, so she had a few minutes to head outside and try to figure out what was wrong with the thing. Normally she’d try to repair it with magic, but that could be dangerous if she couldn’t figure out what was wrong in the first place. She frowned, folding her arms across her chest. It was just so hot.
Coming home early from work Merlin went looking for Audrey when he realised the kids were down and she was most likely using the time to get some jobs done. Entering the garage he smiled, “Here you are. Everything okay?” he asked her, conjuring a fresh cool breeze to blow through the warm space.
The cool breeze definitely helped. Audrey’s shoulders visibly relaxed at the chill and the sound of her husband’s voice. She turned to look at him, a little frustrated and a little helpless. “This Air Conditioning unit’s on the fritz. I could fix it if I knew what was wrong.”
“Want me to take a look?” he asked, “I promise if I figure it out I’ll let you fix it” he added with a smile moving closer and dropping a kiss on her forehead.
Audrey let out a soft chuckle--relief of the frustration she felt that she couldn’t figure it out. Thank God for Merlin. What would she have done without her husband? She grinned at the kiss to her forehead. “I’d love it. Thank you.”
“Anytime” he said, sometimes he did find it amusing that his whole life he’d been good with computers and engineering and that kind of stuff yet had discovered all this magic when he moved here. It didn’t seem like a natural mix. But he tried to use his magic only for things he couldn’t do without it, like creating a breeze where there wasn’t one. Things like this, fixing a machine, he liked to do the old fashioned way.
Audrey moved back into the garage to grab a couple of cold drinks from the fridge they kept out there. (A woman who cooked like Audrey did needed more than one fridge.) She brought them back out to offer him one. “Was work okay?”
“Yeah fairly quiet day. Just the usual, turn it off and on again stuff. Nothing major, though I think we might need to replace a couple of servers soon. But Tony likes to keep everything updated anyway and my budget is pretty impressive” he grinned as he accepted the drink, “You?” he asked, as was their way.
Audrey nodded. It seemed sort of a given that the budget of almost every department at Stark would be impressive. The company had a lot of money to throw around, didn’t it? She smirked a little, leaning against the side of the building while he worked on the AC Unit. “It was fine. We’re designing these new shapes for cookies that are absolutely adorable.” The cookies were going to taste just as good as they looked, too.
It probably did seem a given but even with a large budget Merlin wasn’t the sort to spend frivolously so his team almost always came in under budget at the end of the year. Something it had done ever since Merlin took over. “You know I’m always available as a taste tester right?” he winked at her before there was the sound of scraping metal then he stepped back from the unit, holding up a long screw, “I think this might have been causing a problem” he said before letting Audrey take over.
Audrey snorted softly into her drink. “I have no idea how you’ve been married to me for so long and yet you’re still skinny as a rail. I wish I had your metabolism.” She sipped again, then set the thing on the fence railing so she could move in closer and take a look at the screw. “Is that all? I can’t believe I got so frustrated.” She took the screw from him, and drew out her wand to put the AC back together again.
Merlin laughed, “Well you know I run warm, maybe my body just uses all the food to keep me toasty” he grinned at her, though he was waiting for the day when he started piling on the pounds and had to start saying no to cakes and cookies. It would be a sad day. “It was pretty deep in there, I’m not surprised it was difficult to find”
“Maybe. I wonder what kind of magic that is.” She finished fixing the Air Conditioning unit with a little wave of her wand. The screw screwed itself into place, and the thing turned on immediately. Audrey gave a little sigh and grinned. She put her wand away and dusted her hands off--a job well done. “I would never have found it without you.” And with that she held out both hands to him, beckoning him to come to her embrace.
“Man magic” Merlin shrugged with a grin, he usually only heard women complaining about the cold so maybe it was just another difference between the sexes. “Always here to help” he replied, stepping into her arms easily and wrapping his own around her, “Can’t have you overheating” he smiled before kissing her.
Audrey grinned as she wrapped her arms around him and returned his kiss. Definitely couldn’t have her overheating. And she certainly liked his man magic. “The kids should be out for another twenty minutes. Maybe longer.” She whispered, turning to nuzzle her nose into his neck.
“In that case let’s make the most of those twenty minutes” he told her with a smile while his hands slid to the zipper of her dress.
