Clary was in a world of her own sketching some of the things from her Dreams; demons, angels and runes covered the A3 page. Her sandwich sat half eaten and abandoned on the plate beside her while she focused on her work, so much so that she didn’t hear Anna sit down next to her.
Anna blinked over at her friend and then gave a little chuckle. “Wow, you’re really out of it. What’s up, Clary? Something heavy on your mind?” Anna asked, setting her sandwich on the table in front of her. She unwrapped the thing. It was massive and Anna was starving. The perfect combination.
“Huh?” Looking up, Clary smiled at Anna as she sat down. “Oh, sorry, yeah...I get kind of carried away,” she admitted, putting her pencil down and taking a sip of her drink. “You ok? That’s a helluva sandwich, have you eaten in the last week?” she joked.
“I have. I can really pack it away.” Anna said, grinning. She lifted the gargantuan sandwich and dug in, completely forgetting her manners as she spoke with her mouth full. “How’ve you been? What’s got you all distracted today?”
Clary laughed at Anna as she watched her munch on the sandwich for a second. “Just the usual Dreams. You know, angels, demons, vampires, werewolves, that sort of thing. I just need to sketch it all out sometimes, kind of like therapy I guess,” she gave a little laugh as she shrugged.
“Your Dreams sound so much more interesting than mine,” Anna said with a sigh, between chewing mouthfuls of food. She was grinning softly. Of course, demons, vampires, and werewolves had the potential for being terrifying, but Anna knew that Clary was stronger than that. “I’ve never thought of sketching as therapy, but that sounds great. How’s it work?”
“They’re all interesting in their own way, do you want to tell me about them?” Clary offered with a kind smile. “I just draw what I’ve been Dreaming of really. I start off roughly sketching outlines of things I remember and then I get down to the details. That can take some time, but I find it really therapeutic,” she explained, flipping over her sketchpad to an earlier page to show Anna a detailed sketch of a werewolf, fangs, scars, coarse hair and all.
“I haven’t Dreamed anything in a really long time. My story’s been told. I mean, I haven’t Dreamed anything new in… ages. It was my birthday in my last Dreams, but that felt like an afterthought. Elsa was giving me presents, but she had a head cold.” Anna broke into a grin at the memory. “Yeah? Wow.” Anna turned to look at the picture. “This is… dark! Crazy. I love it!”
Clary quirked a little smile as she looked over the drawings. “Yeah...I guess they are pretty dark. In the Dreams and here I don’t really think about it I just...get on with it, y’know? Your Dreams sound more pleasant though, your birthday sounds better than mine at least,” she joked. “What else happens in your Dreams? I don’t think we’ve ever really talked about it.”
“Well, my… um…” Anna wondered for a moment how to describe it. Then she bit her lip. “Well, I’m a princess. It’s bright and cheerful, and I sing a lot.” She didn’t like bringing it up all the time, because she didn’t want people to think she was a Disney princess. But she was a Disney Princess. She couldn’t help it. “I did almost die once, though.”
“Wow, you sound pretty blase about that,” Clary chuckled lightly and shook her head. “But you said you sing? In the Dreams? Have you sung here too?” she asked, an idea forming in the back of her mind.
Anna chuckled. “Well, it feels like it’s been a really long time. You know? I feel like so much has happened since then. I’ve almost died in my waking hours, too.” That was a long time ago, too. “With all the crazy, I mean.” She blushed a bit and nodded. “I love to sing! I go karaoke as much as I can. It’s hard to bring Wash, though, since I hate taking him to bars.”
“Hang on a sec, who’s this Wash? Is he your new beau?” Clary grinned as she watched her friend blush bright red. “Would you sing for me? So I could sort of...paint your music?” she suggested.
Anna laughed. “Well, yes, I guess so. I mean, we’ve been… sort of together for a long time. Since Memorial Day last year. Though it was really casual at first… we just sort of fell in love.” Anna’s smile probably told the whole story. She was head over heels in love with him.
“I would love to! What would you like me to sing?” She asked. “I sang this song in my dreams about how much I want to meet someone and fall in love. Would you like to hear that one?”
“Go for it! Basically I’m going to sketch whatever your singing inspires me to draw,” Clary told her, getting her coloured chalks and large sketchpad out of her back pack.
“That sounds great!” Anna was excited to see what Clary came up with while she sang. She started in on For the First Time in Forever, and found she really enjoyed singing with her friend.
