What: Random Encounter

This was one of Nora’s favorite cafes. She loved it not only because the coffee was all-you-can-drink so long as you didn’t leave the building, but because it was one of those little, hole-in-the-wall type places without a lot of foot traffic. And they didn’t play loud music, either. Nora had been known to make and post youtube videos from the back room here. No one seemed to care.
She was on her laptop today, clicking around on some other blogs that she followed, and buzzing a little from the caffeine. It felt like a lazy day. Thankfully, there was air conditioning… because it was about a thousand degrees outside. That’s why God invented iced coffee. Nora took another sip, then glanced up when the bell on the door chimed.
School was over, internship was started and all in all? Things were going good! Okay, so Ruby did tend to have a more optimistic outlook on life anyway. But still it was summer and despite the weird singing thing from the start of the month, things were back to normal. Weird dream thing aside that Yang said was normal. She didn’t put too much thought into it thought, they were just part of life. Or something.
For now though, Ruby had free time and a sketchbook for potential project designs, which meant she was going to get iced hot chocolate and sketch (Yes, Yang, she does go out thank you very much). Headphones on and nodding along to her music, the teen slipped into the cafe and put in her order. Once that was done, she looked around before noticing that all the tables were taken.
BUT! There was Nora. So no need to ask a stranger to sit as they at least were familiar with one another. Making her way over, Ruby pulled down her headphones and smiled.
“Hey. Mind if I join you?”
Ruby was one of those people who seemed to be upbeat and optimistic all the time. Nora liked the other girl, even though they weren’t particularly close. Yet. It was always Yet in Nora’s mind. She broke into a smile and sat up straighter at the question. “I might be offended if you didn’t, friend!” Okay, so the friend might have been a bit much, but it was a lot less awkward than saying something like potential friend.
“How’s it going?” She added, trying to bypass the awkward by pushing out the chair for Ruby and changing the subject. All she knew about the other was that she was a student of some kind, and she doodled a lot. Or sketched. Or something. Something artsy. “School’s over?”
“And I wouldn’t want to do that. Thanks!” Ruby did tend to be socially awkward and not know how to properly interact with people and missed social cues, but she wasn’t completely helpless at it. Still, she did smile brighter at the friend comment. Yes, they were really just coffee buddies of the needing a table to sit at variety. But it was still nice to hear even if she was working on the friend thing.
It was comfortable and familiar, and that was important.
Taking the chair and sitting down, Ruby took a sip of her drink before answering.
“It’s going! I started a new internship which is super exciting! How about you? How is the bloggering?” She wasn’t quite sure the purpose of blogs and the like, but to each their own! And it made Nora happy. And okay so she probably used the wrong term but that was Ruby for you.
“That’s great!” Nora was truly happy for her friend. An internship sounded really good! Though, Nora didn’t know what Ruby was studying. Still, internships were good. That was a step in the direction of a career, for what she could tell. “Where is the internship? What will you be doing there? Something fun, I hope. Will they have a cafeteria?”
Then Nora sighed softly and closed her computer. “For some reason I’m having a hard time finding new followers. I feel like my material is all dated. It’s just a phase, and I’m sure I’ll get through it. I just need to shake it off!” And she gave her hands and face a little shake.
“Future Industries in research and development for mechanical engineering. So definitely fun. Or… fun for me anyway.” Which was typical. Ruby’s definition of ‘fun’ tended to be different from most people because of her own interests. But she was excited about the internship and to her? It was definitely fun. “And yep! There’s a cafeteria.”
Nodding some, Ruby considered what Nora said. It wasn’t like she really understood blogging in the first place and even though she was on the network where people talked about their dreams (which were really weird if hers were anything to go off of), it was still something Nora did and was important to her.
“You’ll definitely get through it. I think everyone has times like that in what they do when it seems nothing works.” She knew that she did when she was working on some projects, they just never seemed to want to work.
“I have no idea what that all means, but it sounds great!” Nora’s eyes sparkled for her friend. Her new friend. She sat up a little straighter. “I want to work in a place that has a cafeteria! I’d probably eat pancakes all day long. I’d probably get big as a house!” She held out her hands over her stomach as if she was pregnant with a pancakes baby. Which sounded to her like the best kind of baby to have.
“So long as I keep going. Sure enough, things always come along when I keep up with it. It’s not an easy living to make, but it works for me. It helps, too, that I share the rent. I wouldn’t be able to keep things up on my own. Not here.” Prices in California were absolutely insane.
“It’s okay, a lot of people don’t.” She was used to it. “But it is! It’ll be a great experience.” With a possibility of staying on after she graduated, which was even better. Giggling some, Ruby nodded and took a sip of her drink, “That’s a lot of pancakes. They might have to put a limit on it so you’d do your work.” Ruby couldn’t fathom having a baby. Any kind of baby. Or relationships in general, but that was neither here nor there.
“Exactly. And rent sharing is super important.” Ruby well knew that she was lucky that she was still living with her dad. She couldn’t fathom trying to make it on her own. She’d figure it out soon enough, for now she was going to focus on school since she had the ability to do so. “But you get to do something you really like as well, which is also important.”
“Gooooood point. I’m sure I could figure out some kind of a balance. Eventually. After a lot of pancakes.” Nora nodded as if that settled the matter.
“You’d better believe it.” Nora smiled at the thought of her roommate. It was one of those tender smiles, one with a hint of nostalgia. The kind of smile a girl didn’t realize she was making. “Yes, that’s true. I do love what I do. I’ve been wondering if I should explore other things, too, though. You know? Maybe I have a calling in life I never considered.” Then again, maybe the “calling” was just Nora’s stomach asking for a chocolate chip muffin.
And the matter was settled. Still, Ruby was smiling and in good company so why wouldn’t she be? Nora wasn’t the only one who didn’t realize the type of smile she was making. Then again, Ruby tended to be oblivious to such things or not understand them and didn’t have a real interest to.
“It doesn’t hurt to try! I know I’m considered weird because I’ve always had an idea on what I want to do that didn’t change all the time. So you never know, there could be something else that you really like and just haven’t tried yet.”
Of course, even with her shyness, Ruby was the type who always tried at least once even if she wasn’t sure… like the stupid heels that her dad and uncle had tricked her into wearing before Yang mentioned fancy flats. She had still tried.
Nora nodded, pondering that for a moment. It was a serious subject, really, changing her profession. (If one could call blogging and YouTubeing a “profession”...) The idea that she might not have any income at all for the time it took to change vocations was a little daunting. She’d had no income for a good chunk of her life, and she really didn’t like it. It might also put a lot of stress on Ren. That was also a no-go. She had more pondering to do, but not while she had good company!
“So, how’s your sister?” Nora asked, reaching for her coffee cup. The creamy goodness was just about the perfect temperature to chug. Nora had to hold back. She didn’t want to go super sonic with the caffeine.
Ruby wasn’t quite sure on all the dynamics but when a lot of things relied on the computer and internet that could be done at the same time, she figured it would probably be doable. But then again, each person was different. But the topic changed to Yang and Ruby smiled.
“She’s doing well.” Or as well as Yang would ever let herself appear before her. She knew that her sister wouldn’t show her if she wasn’t okay and despite the random singing thing that had happened where she suddenly made Yang cry even if she was told it was okay…. Well. Yang was doing well.
“That’s good! I’m sure you’re supporting her the best you can. You’re that kind of girl.” Nora didn’t know that much about Ruby, but she could tell that the other was a really good sister. The kind of girl who takes care of people. Nora tried to be, too, but there was only so much she could do. She tried to take care of Ren, but sometimes she thought he did more to take care of her than vice versa.
Ruby would try and save the world if given the opportunity. In the dreams she wanted to be like the heroes from stories, saving people and making things better because they weren't always great. Here she wanted to create things with her degree that would help people who needed it.
“Yep!” Even though she knew Yang wouldn't tell her how she really was and that it was upsetting as it was both an attempt to protect Ruby and just the feeling like her sister didn't trust her, Ruby just smiled because she did everything she could to help and at least Yang wasn't avoiding her anymore.
Nora’s phone chimed. She’d been about to say something, but the sound coming from her phone caught her attention. “Oh, shoot! I have to go!” She started packing her things--laptop, notebook, phone--into her shoulderbag. “I’ve got to catch the bus so I can make it home in time. We should talk more soon! Here.” Then she dug out a little card with her name, phone number, blog address, and email address on it. It was hand-written. Nora made her own business cards. Cute, right? “Send me a message and we’ll hang out. Okay?” Bright smile. “Gotta dash!”
As Nora’s phone chimed, Ruby blinked and then nodded with a smile.
“Okay! See you around!” And then she was being given a card with all of Nora’s information. Honestly it was probably something she should have had already, yet given the fact she was pretty bad at the putting herself out there thing, it wasn’t so shocking so instead she smiled more. “I will!” If she remembered but she was working on that. “Bye!” Waving as Nora left, Ruby pulled out her sketchbook to get some work done before heading back home for the day.
