Presto hurried over as soon as he heard from her. He hated that Vanessa, who had so been good to him, was now facing heartbreak. He had come to see her as someone truly precious, someone he loved dearly, and relied on in his life. To hear that she was hurting had struck him hard and sent him immediately to her side.
He found himself wishing that magic could help with this, too, but he knew it could not.Only time could heal this wound. He hurried to her place, and then knocked, hoping she would and could hear.
***
Discovering that Dorian had left had hit Vanessa like a physical blow, she had given so much of herself to him and truly believed that here they would be given a second chance. But it seems the dreams could not leave them be and it had eventually been the reason Dorian had given for leaving. Though his note was vague and somewhat disjointed.
She hadn’t known what to do at first but had contacted Presto who she knew would come to her aid and offer her the company she knew she should have. He was a loyal and caring friend and she could rely on him. When the knock came she moved to answer the door, giving him a smile as she beckoned him inside, “Thank you for coming” she said.
***
Presto moved inside, then turned, and as soon as the door was closed, he hugged her. She was important to him, and hurting, and he could feel it form here. To see her hurt so, he felt like he was hurting himself, and he knew that he had to be here for her. She had been there for him so often, and he wanted to return the favor to this very important woman.
“You know I will come any time, any day, whenever you call. That’s what you do for people who are important to you.” He didn’t quite say people you love, because he was still a little embarrassed to use such words, and also, he was not sure that it wouldn't poke her some, with Dorian gone.
***
The moment he hugged her Vanessa relaxed into it and her own arms wrapped around him gratefully. She appreciated the comfort offered and knowing there was somebody who cared so much about her was something she desperately needed right now.
“Thank you Presto, I do not know what I would do without you” He had become so important to her. As much as she was helping him with his abilities he was helping her too, he was so open and bright that she was learning to be more so. They were a good pair.
***
“You’d get through, but I know what it is like to lose, and be alone, and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy, much less one of the most important people in my life right now.” He smiled and hugged her again, gently, but firmly. It was his way to not hug too hard, even if he knew she would not break.
“I wish I knew how to help more, but I am here, and I will be here as long as you want me here.” For him, it was as easy as that.
***
Vanessa appreciated the contact, she wasn’t an overly tactile person but with those she cared about it certainly became easier and at this current moment she needed it. “You are far too good to me” she told him, but she wasn’t going to say no because she appreciated it a lot.
Normally she would have felt guilty for monopolising his time, but she knew he was currently taking a break to work things out so didn’t feel as bad. “Would you like some tea? I had just put the kettle on” because she was still British after all and that was what you did in any crisis.
***
“I would love some. I might have also brought some with me.” He reached back into his messenger bag and pulled out two fresh packages of tea, holding them out. They just happened to be one of her favorites.
“I was saving these for part of a birthday present, but I thought that, all things considered, now was a better time.”
She was important to him, so of course, he had gone looking once he knew her favorites. She was the reason he was able to think and act straight these days. And he was by god going to return the favor of being there for her.
***
“You are amazing” Vanessa told him, touched that he’d thought to find her favourite and on top of that he had brought it with him. He was a very considerate young man. “Thank you so much Presto, that is incredibly thoughtful of you”
She led the way to the kitchen, though he knew his way around as well as she did by now. He’d been to her home so many times before, though of course now it felt a little emptier. She wasn’t sure she would stay here, though Dorian’s note told her he’d transferred the house to her name. It was too big for just one person.
***
Presto flushed and smiled. “I have been inspired by the best.” He smiled to her, nibbling one lips in his teeth. He was almost shy about it, but he cared about this woman, who so moved him, and his life.
“Thank you, for being so much here, always. And know that, no matter what, I will do whatever you need for as long as you need it done.”
He followed her to the kitchen, falling into a step just behind and to the right, not completely ‘following’ so much as just slightly pacing at her back and side. It had become a habit of his, both to be there for her, and to show respect. Something out of his dreams, really.
***
He really was too kind to her but Vanessa couldn’t say she minded too much, he was a special person and she was glad to have him.
“I know and I really do appreciate it. It helps knowing I have you there for me” Vanessa told him as they reached the kitchen and she moved to fill the kettle to put it on for the tea, “I think I’m going to need you as I decide what I’m going to do”
***
He would disagree. He felt he was just returning the favor. They were connected, she and he, and he liked it. He felt like he would never be unhappy about that, and he would always come when she called.
She had helped him so much. Helped him with his powers, and his life, and his sanity, even.
He listened as she spoke, and he smiled as he gently touched her arm, just once, as if to say, ‘hey, I am here.‘, and smiled at her words. “As long as you want me or need me here, i will not be going anywhere else.”
He would go out for groceries and to see his friends now and then, but she was… she was closer than family, for him, and he would not abandon her.
“Whatever you need, Vanessa. I’m here.” And he would do pretty much anything she asked, without question, because of how much he trusted her.
***
There had never really been a choice to help him, Vanessa had wanted to do whatever she could from the first time they had met. There was a connection there and she knew better than to question it.
She would never want him to stop seeing friends or going about his life but knowing she wouldn’t be alone while she handled everything was important to her. It made her feel stronger and braver somehow.
“Thank you, truly” Vanessa said, “Having you here is helping more than you can know. I don’t feel quite as overwhelmed as I did when I found the letter”
***
There was always a choice and she had made hers, made a difference. Every time he met her, his life only got better, and only go brighter. She made his life more brilliant, and more intense, and more… right.
“You are important.” He knew he would be here for her. She meant a great deal.
“I’m glad I can help, then. “ Impulsively, he hugged her again. He liked hugs, okay?
“How are you feeling?” He wanted to give her a chance to actually vent if she needed to, to talk it out, or whatever felt best.
***
Vanessa would have blushed and been overwhelmed by how much Presto thought of her, she didn’t think she was that special.
Smiling she hugged him back, it was nice even for someone who wasn’t overly huggy.
“Angry, sad, disappointed” she gave him a sad little smile, “It shouldn’t have been a surprise, but it was. I thought we were building a life together, a future and now all I have to show for it is this big empty house” she sighed sadly.
***
She was an amazing person who had changed his life, and he had a great many, sometimes conflicting, feelings for her. Mostly, he kept them quiet, and he hugged her when he could. He was here to support her, after all.
He nodded, his face serious and sympathetic. He knew, a little those feelings, though not for this reason, or in this amount. He hoped he never did.
“It’s never easy to find your life suddenly changed without discussion or any chance to even prepare. I’m so sorry, Vanessa.” If he could prevent this, he would have moved the world to do so. No one deserved that shock, loss and sudden pained feeling that came with this kind of situation.
No one.
“Anything I can do to help at all, please let me know.”
***
Vanessa hoped Presto never felt like this either, she wouldn’t wish it on anybody. He deserved to find happiness with somebody in the forever kind and she hoped he would.
“Thank you” she said, “It isn’t easy but I like to think of myself as a strong person and with time and incredible friends” she smiled at him, “I know I can move on from it. Perhaps learning a thing or two as well” Maybe she was simply meant to remain alone.
***
“You’re welcome. And you are. You are stronger than you know, even.” He was confident she would get past it. “We do learn from all things, yes.”
And no, she deserved such good joy. And love, she deserved love. He knew this.
***
“Well then let’s start by enjoyed tea and maybe a sneaky biscuit or two and then doing something fun. I think we deserve something fun” Vanessa said, as she poured the boiling water into the teapot. Taking their mind off things sounded like the best plan and spending time with Presto doing that was perfect in her mind.
***
“That sounds perfect. We could see a movie, or make cookies, or just play some games, if you like?” He grinned at her. “As long as you are happy, I’m happy.” He nodded. She was the best and he hoped he could help.
***
“I have not been to the movies in a long time. Let’s do that, I am sure there will be something silly and light hearted to watch” she said, “Something that will make both of us happy” Because that was the ideal and would help a lot.
