What: Kitty introduces Diana to only the best pizza in the history of ever
When: Late June
Where: A pizza place and then Disneyland
Status: Complete
Rating: PG
The past few days had been a little bit of a roller coaster for Kitty. With the kids in town, some incidents better left forgotten, and a few new bruises on her stomach and back from dealing with said incidents, she was more than ready for a break. The kids were spending the weekend with friends, which meant she definitely had time to introduce only the best pizza ever to a rather remarkable and attractive lady.
She just had to not … trip over every other word, and everything would be fine.
Settling in was a little more difficult than some liked to think. America was completely different from Greece. Everything was so much louder, so much less...rooted in history, if that could be a thing. Diana tended to miss the ruins of temples and amphitheaters that were commonplace in Greece and mixed in with modernization. She missed the feel of history being all around her.
The heat, however, was something else entirely. It wasn’t nearly as hot as it was a little further east, but it was enough that Diana opted for a tanktop today. Her dark hair was in a ponytail to keep it off her neck. Still not quite accustomed to driving in America, she’d taken a cab here. Stepping out of it, she looked at the place, tilting her head as she studied the store front. It certainly was intriguing.
Stepping inside, she slid her sunglasses up to rest on top of her head as she looked around for Kitty. The aroma of the food in the restaurant was rather enticing.
The history of America presented differently. It was in how food tasted, in how immigrants integrated and adapted while still maintaining their identity. It was in the underground railroad, or old records of the Chicago fire. It was the memory of old hollywood, and the older memory of Mexico California. There was history, but it was newer.
Kitty had struggled with what to wear, but with the weather she’d had to wear a tank top as well. That didn’t mean she got one look at Diana and how elegant she looked and didn’t have a gay panic attack. Swallowing her nerves, she waved Diana over. “Hey!”
Uncovering the history of America would be something Diana would enjoy. It was a melting pot of the world in many respects. Immigrants from the world over left their marks as time passed. Then there were the Native Americans, people that Diana would love to learn more about.
Seeing Kitty wave at her, Diana smiled and walked over to her. “Hello, I hope that I am not late,” she said as she took the seat across from Kitty. She was, in fact, on time, but she sort of felt like she was late.
“I’m a little early,” Kitty assured her, tucking some hair back behind her ear. She didn’t know what it was, but Diana was just so… unsettling. Not a bad unsettle, a good unsettle and unsettle was probably the wrong word for it. It was probably a good idea not to stare at her arms, but her eyes were so friendly and enrapturing.
“And you’re right on time.”
Diana possibly had that effect on people, unsettling them. She was also used to people staring. She didn’t mind the staring. Sometimes she felt the staring was for her height rather than her looks, which was probably true.
“Oh good, I do not like to be late and try to avoid it as much as possible.” She smiled. “I recall you saying that you are originally from Chicago. How long have you lived here in California?”
The height wasn’t a problem. Kitty had mostly gotten over that from her dreams, anyway. It wasn’t like Kitty was short. Just compared to some other women… “Six years now, give or take. Maybe seven. Moved out here when I was nineteen. After those years in Japan and London.”
Her youth and naivete had gotten her into some interesting trouble in London, but that was then.
Noting Kitty’s age, Diana just smiled. She was only a year or two older than Kitty. Well, maybe more like a couple years since her birthday was approaching. But that was besides the point. “Japan and London sound like they would be amazing places to visit. I would like to see them one day.”
Kitty almost answered that she could take her. With the Blackbird they could go anywhere in the world for an afternoon, the longest trip not much longer than two hours one way. But she bit her tongue and answered instead, “They’re beautiful, each in a different way. And each city is so old you can almost feel it in your soul. If I had to pick just one I don’t think I’d be able to.”
“I love that feeling when you are in a city and can feel it in your soul. Any city in Greece has that effect on me. New York City also did, just in a different way. It is hard to describe that feeling other than that it makes you feel more alive. Or at least that is how I feel in such places.” Diana said with a smile. She just came alive wherever there was history to learn. Or just new things in general to learn.
Leaning her chin on her hand, Kitty couldn’t help but smile at Diana. There was something so refreshing about her. “Sometimes I have to do something exciting to get that feeling. Jump out an airplane, spar with someone, jump my motorcycle.”
She did like to live dangerously.
Diana grinned. “I see now, you are a thrill seeker? Daredevil, I believe is the correct term?” Sometimes English was hard, and Diana wasn’t always good at finding the correct synonyms. Especially when she tended to think in Greek. Things didn’t always translate easily.
“Daredevil is a good word for it. Adrenaline junkie, too, but that might require some more context.” She ran her hand through her hair. Really, Diana, just keep talking and Kitty would be happy. “Addicted to the rush, and all. I’m probably more proud of that then I should be.”
“So you are one who enjoys living in the moment and tempting fate? It certainly sounds as though you live life to the fullest with that sort of experience.” Diana hadn’t exactly done anything like that. Her mother probably would’ve had a stroke and banned Diana from leaving the house for a prolonged period of time if she’d ever tried that. Her mother was rather overprotective like that.
Kitty laughed. “Yeah, I guess I do like tempting fate. Nothing really stupid mind you.” Most of the time. “But life has taught me it’s too short not to enjoy it when you have the chance. You’ll regret it if you don’t.”
“Do what you love and what makes you happy, in other words.” Diana said, nodding a bit. “There is little point in going through life without enjoying it. It is certainly short, and far too short to do things that you are not invested in.”
Kitty could appreciate Diana’s optimism, and it was an emotion she was in short supply of lately. And it had been lacking for awhile. Everytime she felt like there was reason to be, something beat her back down. A constant state of anger at the current world environment simmered beneath the surface and didn’t help. But she pushed all that aside; Diana had the kind of smile that could make you forget yourself.
She was about to ask what Diana had been up to when their number came up. “One sec. I’ve got to go order. Is there anything you’re allergic to or just really don’t like?”
“I am not fond of anchovies. Other than that, I have no allergies or things that I do like.” Really, Diana could eat just about anything. Though she didn’t expect Kitty to put anything too strange on the pizza. She hadn’t even expected anchovies to even be something Kitty would put on it, but she still responded with it. Maybe it would be good to know for future reference?
“Okay, two supreme slices it is!” Kitty got up and winked, before walking up to the counter to get the slices and pay. She wasn’t sure on drinks, so just went with two waters.
“And voila!” She slid the plate in front of Diana. “It’s messy, you eat with your hands and it’s genuine Chicago Deep Dish, only the best pizza ever.”
Diana smiled, watching Kitty head to the counter to order. She glanced around the restaurant, finally able to take in the decoration. But once Kitty came back, she turned her full attention back to her and the pizza. Diana looked at it curiously.
“That is certainly quite the mound of pizza,” she commented, a bit in awe. She then carefully picked it up, not wanting to dump any of the toppings off if she could help it. Diana took a careful bite, mostly just so she wouldn’t burn her mouth. But it was pure ecstasy! It was the right amount of crunchy crust and melted cheese, along with the toppings. She closed her eyes and made a yummy sound as she chewed the bite in her mouth. “This is exquisite!” She declared before she even swallowed the food in her mouth.
There was a reason it was the best pizza in the world, no matter what a New Yorker might say. Kitty had her slice in her hand and kind of forgot she was holding it at the expression on Diana’s face.
That shouldn’t be attractive, and yet it was. She crossed her legs under the table and took a bite. “Exquisite. I like that!”
Diana finally swallowed the food in her mouth. “My mother would be horrified by me talking with my mouth full, but I could not help it.” She took a drink of water. “You were very right. This pizza is wonderful!” And she took another bite.
Kitty put her pizza down. It was probably rude to stare, so she contented herself with a very long sip of water. Diana was just so cute. “I’m glad it passed the test. If it hadn’t I don’t know if we could have been friends!”
“Well then, I am happy that we are able to be friends, then!” Diana said with a grin that made her dark eyes sparkle. And the corners of her eyes also crinkled with the smile. She took another bite of food. “Though I suppose the next test would be you trying some Greek food.”
“I hope I like it.” Kitty’s grin made her cheeks hurt and her hand was halfway to touching Diana’s when she caught herself. Pretending she was reaching for a napkin instead, she then sat back in her chair. “I don’t see why I wouldn’t. Haven’t met a food I really, really hate.”
“That is fortunate. It allows me to reach deeper into the Greek foods for something for you to try.” Diana liked that. Going with something like a gyro was just too simple, and considering how widespread gyros were, chances were that Kitty had already tried one. No, Diana was going to go for something more than that. She had a couple ideas already.
She’d had a Gyro or two, after some of her dreams, the ones where Avalanche was sort of a good guy and she’d sort of had a crush on him.
“See, now I’m all kinds of excited.”
“Now I will simply have to find if there’s an acceptable Greek restaurant here with an acceptable menu, or if I will just need to cook for you instead.” Diana had noticed that Greek restaurants could be difficult to find here in America. Authentic Greek restaurants owned by Greek families seemed even harder to find.
“I’m sure there are some? But I’d believe that would be easier to find on the East coast. West coast is better for Asian and Mexican cuisine. Just a location thing.” Kitty swore her heart was going to thump out of her chest. “You can cook?”
“Location is key. It may simply be easier to cook it myself.” Once she decided on what to cook. The ingredients would probably be a lot easier to find than a really good Greek restaurant. “Yes, I can. My mother had me learn while growing up. When I was at university, I expanded my cooking skills.” Meaning she didn’t fall into the hole of eating crap food. Of course, her mother had helped in that respect. Her mother had a lot of money, which she used to help Diana along now and then.
Kitty felt some heat reach her face, which was stupid. Diana was just being nice and offering to cook the Meals of Her People. Which was only fair since Kitty had introduced her to Chicago Deep Dish.
It would probably be different if she busted out one of the meals her parents used to make, which would actually be really weird, because she only ever ate anything like that around the holidays. Like when Jemma had invited her over which had been really touching because the alternative had been eating alone.
“Luckily for me, I had some help from my parents, since I was like 16 when I was in college. But when I was in London especially there was a lot of ramen in my diet…”
Diana didn’t mind cooking. Besides, she really only got to cook for herself. Sometimes she also cooked for her mother, but that was about it. It would be good to be able to cook for someone else, especially when that someone else didn’t have much they didn’t like to eat.
“That is definitely nice to have help from your parents, that they would do that. My mother did the same for me. She still would help me if an argument had not drawn lines in the sand about it.” Diana said, taking another bite of her pizza. It had only been one of many fights over various topics with her mother, but the two still held a very close relationship.
“My mother was not in favor of my coming to America. She does not like me being so far away.” Which she understood, she was an only child, and her mother worried over her quite a lot. Still, Diana had offered the olive branch and allowed her mother to help her buy a home here, one with a spare bedroom so visits could happen easily.
“Yeah, I can see how she’d worry. My parents did too, when I was overseas,” Kitty replied. “Not that me and my mom are on speaking terms. We’ve barely exchanged two words with each other in like four years. Not since I came out. Dad embraced it, mom pretends I don’t exist.”
She shrugged. It still stung sometimes, but she was mostly over it. “Jokes on her, she gets to miss out on two wonderful kids.”
“I am sorry that your mother is not supportive of you in that way. Though I am glad that your father is supportive. You are correct, she is missing out on your children. They are very charming, if I may say so.” Diana said with a smile. Especially the young man. She was rather taken by him, she had to say.
“I love them. I never expected them, but my late wife came with a pair of twin little siblings and I’m just trying to do my best for them.” It had meant having them live with her dad for two years, with frequent visits. OC wasn’t exactly safe, but Kitty had realized that had been a mistake. Not one she intended to make again.
Diana was a bit pained to hear about Kitty’s wife having passed away. “I am sorry to hear about your wife. Though I believe you are doing well for them. They seem to love you and you love them. And that is what matters.”
“It was years ago, but thanks” Kitty waved a hand. It would be something she’d never fully be over, but such pain could be set aside and moved on from. Even if she’d screwed up every relationship since. Oops. “They helped me get through it, because they needed me to be there for them. I’m just happy they like me so much.”
Even with that kind of pain being old, it never really went away. Diana didn’t know that from personal experience, but she knew enough people who had lost someone they loved to know it was something that was never completely healed. “It must have helped both you and them to have someone to lean on through that period. I think all three of you came out the stronger for it.”
“Thanks…” Kitty liked to think she had, and that her friends had helped too. Sometimes there were darker moments, that came out especially with the political climate. But she could handle that. She just needed to find the best way to act.
“I don’t always feel that strong. Sometimes I feel a little helpless. But it’s something that can be worked on.”
“For what it is worth, I believe everyone goes through periods of feeling a little helpless. That is part of life. But those are the times when your friends help you out and remind you of your strength.” Endless optimism. Diana had it in spades. She well knew the world was a dark place. She knew the horrors that happened. Yet despite all of that, she could still look at the bright side of it all. Someone needed to, after all. If everyone just looked at the darkness and the bad in the world, the world would be a far darker place than it was.
There was an old saying about looking at someone like they were the sun, because they shone so bright. Kitty didn’t think that quite applied, because it was hard to look away. So perhaps Diana was the moon instead. Someone to stare at in awe and Wonder.
And maybe a little gay panic. “There was a time when I’d be the one making that speech. Maybe that isn’t so far in the past.”
Diana kind of reminded Kitty of Esmeralda in a few ways, too. And that was a rabbit hole she shouldn’t go down. As if she could ever control herself.
“Perhaps that means that you will one day be able to make that speech again.” Diana liked to think that no matter what someone went through in life, they could always regain parts of who they once had been if they wanted to. But that was the catch, the person needed to want to change, to be more like they had been before life had taken an unexpected turn.
“Maybe...” She was willing to try it, even if it didn’t always feel like it was possible. Hoping her dreams would actually cooperate, Kitty tucked her hair back again, and looked down at their plates. “Wow, you devoured that!”
She certainly hoped that Kitty would not lose hope in the matter. At the statement, Diana had to laugh a bit. “I did, yes. I have been known to eat my weight in food and still be hungry.” Especially during her growth spurts. Yet she could still pack the food away at an alarming rate if she was given the chance to.
“You don’t look it at all. I mean you’re not super thin either, and you’ve got some amazing muscles. I’m pretty sure you could bench press me! I mean..” Kitty coughed and glugged her water. “People would kill for your metabolism.”
“Thank you,” Diana replied with a laugh following it. “I am certain they would. I have always been active, though I do not know if I could bench press you. That is something I would need to work towards.”
“Consider it a challenge.” Kitty finished her water, which suddenly left her with nothing to cover her nerves. She took a breath to calm herself down. How was it she could smooth with other people but Diana turned her into a wreck?
“I’m mostly lean muscle, but I have to be a little more careful in indulging myself.”
“Perhaps I will,” she responded with a smirk. Diana drank some of her water. She liked Kitty, she could easily talk to her. Some people were harder to talk to than others. And somehow she felt if she started rambling on about something related to history that Kitty would actually listen and not just get that glazed over look most people got when Diana went into such rambles.
“Ah yes, not everyone can be blessed with the metabolism I have.” She teased.
It wouldn’t even just because Diana was easy to listen to. Kitty did like learning new things, and it was actually Xi’an who’d in part gotten her into that kind of thing. Also Humphrey Bogart, but Humphrey Bogart was a her/xi’an/twins thing, so now a her/twins thing. She wasn’t inclined to share. “I’m not as light as I look, but some people might call me twinkletoes.”
Diana more than understood things that were only done with certain people. Diana and her mother had archery as their thing. “Is twinkletoes because of your dancing background? Or is it because of the martial arts?” Either way, Kitty was clearly light on her feet given both things.
“A little bit of both. I’ll have to show you some time. But I haven’t really done ballet in years, like I told you.” Going on 11 years now? 12? Something like that. She’d done some exercises here and there, but nothing serious. “I’m not sure I miss it. I guess I miss the freedom part.”
“It is okay to not miss it. People change as they grow older, and that goes for their likes and dislikes as well. Though I would like to see what you are able to do.” Diana encouraged. And she would. With both ballet and martial arts in Kitty’s background, she was undoubtedly very graceful. It would certainly be nice to watch.
“I’d love to show you what I could do.” There was a little bit of suggestion in Kitty’s voice, that she’d found impossible to avoid. Her skin flushed. “I mean. With the kicking, and the punching. And maybe the spinning. You might like the spinning.”
“I probably would like the spinning. So simply let me know when you want to show me your moves.” Diana said with a smile. She wasn’t completely expecting it to be today, especially after the hefty pizza they’d just eaten. But she wouldn’t be against it either.
An excuse to see Diana again was something to take, so Kitty shook her head. “Not ready to call it a day, but should do that another day, soon. I need time to make sure I don’t fall on my face in front of you.”
“After that pizza, it might be rather easy to fall over,” Diana teased with a laugh. “I do look forward to seeing what you can do.” Diana didn’t have any special talents to show off. While she worked out, she didn’t exactly have anything spectacular to show off.
“No pressure,” Kitty joked. She leaned on her elbows. “Have you had a chance to look around the county since you arrived? Besides the museum, I mean.”
“Not too much, no. I have familiarized myself with the area around where I live and where I work. Otherwise, I have yet to really see the county.” Diana replied.
“Where do you live?” It was an innocent question and not meant to be creepy or anything. “Had a chance to check out Disneyland or Knott’s Berry?”
“Anaheim. And no, I have not seen either of those places.” Diana had heard of Disneyland, of course. But she hadn’t heard of Knott’s Berry.
Kitty stared at her like she’d grown two heads, then clucked her tongue. “Okay we’re going to need to fix that. What better way to work off some pizza than a tour of the House of Mouse?”
Diana had to laugh a bit. “I suppose that is certainly fair. We have calories to burn now, after all!” Despite the vegetables that had been present on the pizza, it still was quite a few calories.
Lots of calories. Kitty got to her feet and waited for Diana, then led her outside. She’d taken her motorcycle, a blue and red speed demon from Japan that had been modified by an old friend to be super silent, super fast, and super maneuverable. “Want to follow me, or just hitch a ride on my bike?”
She had to admire the motorcycle. It had a certain aesthetic to it that she liked. Also it seemed to suit Kitty, from what she could tell at any rate. “Considering that I did not drive myself here, taking a ride on your bike would be best.”
Handing over one of the helmets, Kitty grinned and pulled her own on. It was blue and gold and had a stylized purple dragon on each side. It also had cat ears. Shut up.
She got onto the bike and started it, the only sound a kind of low pitched hum. She affected her best Han Solo, “Hop on, princess.”
Kitty’s helmet was certainly interesting to see. Diana had to smile warmly at it as she pulled on the helmet Kitty handed her. “I see you got a helmet to match your name,” she commented. She then had to chuckle as she got on the bike behind Kitty. “Princess?” She asked.
"A joke. Since you're kind of classy." Despite the tank top.
Kitty swallowed, because there genuinely wasn't that much fabric between them at the moment and in that moment she realized how touch starved she was. And she didn't even have Rogue's excuse.
"Hold on, extra tight," She warned.
“Thank you,” she said with a smile. Diana was classy, even with the tank top. It was almost uncanny how much grace she carried herself with. At the instruction, she nodded a bit and slid her arms around Kitty’s middle and held on tightly. “Ready,” she announced.
Needing three-fifths of a second to process, Kitty gunned the bike and shot out into traffic. Except for the wind, it ran silently. A perfect motorcycle for a ninja, in all honesty. It was fast, light and agile, and danced through traffic like a ballerina.
This was a kind of freedom, and Kitty had little fear.
As the bike took off, Diana tightened her hold on Kitty a bit more. It was incredibly fast, but it was a ride unlike any other. The bike was silent, which seemed a little strange, but Diana didn’t pay it that much attention. She was more concerned with not letting go of Kitty. She didn’t want to accidentally go flying off of the motorcycle. That would just be a terrible end to an otherwise enjoyable day.
"I'm the mistress of smooth rides," Kitty said at a stop light, then mentally slapped herself. Mistress of cool rides, really Kitty?
Fortunately for Diana, they reached Disneyland. The parking was both ridiculous and pricey, but Kitty had a pass. She turned around, walking backwards, "Know anything about the place or should I just surprise you?"
Because stop #1 was a Mickey Mouse hat. It’s the law.
“So I can see,” she responded with a laugh. The parking lot was absolutely insane. Diana hadn’t really seen anything like it before. She followed after Kitty, smiling at her question. “I do not know specifics. I have seen animated Disney films, and know there are rides here based on some of their movies. That is about it.”
“Allright. Well first thing, we need to get you into the proper attire.” She held out her hands like a frame over Diana’s body. “The hat. Maybe a shirt. Who’s your favorite Disney character?”
“Mulan is my favorite.” Diana had always respected the female warrior going off to battle to save her father. If Diana had been in that position, she would have done the same thing. Stealing armor and a sword and running off to war.
Mulan was a good choice. Kitty nodded and led Diana right to the store first. She plucked a Mickey hat and put it on Diana's head, grinning at her. "Now we need to find you a shirt."
Something with Mulan on it that still looked good on her. "Maybe a tank top, with this heat."
Diana leaned down a little when Kitty moved to put the hat on her. After all, she was rather tall. She smiled. “Tank top would probably be best. Tan lines are evil,” she commented. She had a tan, but she wasn’t necessarily needing to get tan lines.
“There’s a high fence in my backyard. Never have to worry about tanlines,” Kitty winked, then turned around and made a bug-eyed face at herself, before searching for a tank top. She held one up. “How about this?”
That comment caused Diana’s eyebrows to rise up her forehead. That was entirely unexpected. “You are a woman of surprises,” she responded with a smile. She then turned her attention to the tank top that Kitty held up. She tilted her head a bit as she looked it over. “I like it, though…” Diana moved over to the rack and sifted through the tank tops there before pulling another one out that was in a different color and had a different picture. “I think I like this one better.”
“I live to surprise, what can I say?” Kitty returned the shirt she’d found and nodded at Diana. “I’ll accept your judgement, I’m not always the most fashion conscious. When I was younger I was a fashion disaster.”
Which was an understatement. Sometimes it was a miracle Kitty could dress herself and still look good.
“Truly?” Diana asked, suddenly giving Kitty’s outfit a closer look over. “Well, stick with me and I will show you how to dress.” She didn’t mean as formally as Diana herself could dress at times, but she could at least give Kitty a few pointers. Colors that should never be paired together, types of clothing that would suit her body type, things of that nature.
She had just a wonderful way of talking and Kitty responded with a smile. “Well, I don’t mind. I’m not as bad as I used to be, but I’m sure I still make questionable decisions.”
Though she considered her redesign for Rachel’s costume to be really good.
“You are not so bad. You have not made a questionable decision today.” Diana teased with a laugh. She then headed over to the register to pay for the hat and the tank top.
“Right,” she murmured. Another girl in the shop elbowed her and waggled her eyebrows and Kitty turned beat red. Fireworks went off outside and that gave her an idea. “Hey Diana, got any plans for the Fourth of July? Come to think of it have you ever done a Fourth of July?”
Hearing the fireworks, Diana glanced outside the shop before she turned her attention back to Kitty. “I cannot say that I have, no. What do you do on the Fourth of July?” Diana was aware of what the day meant, she even knew the general practice of fireworks to celebrate. She just didn’t know what specific people did to celebrate.
“Traditionally fireworks,” Kitty explained. “Though out here you can’t really do the good stuff in your back yard. You have to go out places away from the main city for that. Also cookouts, BBQ, drinking. It varies from family to family, but I like the boomies.”
“How do you celebrate? Aside from fireworks, that is.” Diana asked, genuinely curious as to how Kitty celebrated the holiday. Diana paid for the hat (which stayed on her head) and the tank top, then started to head out of the shop, letting Kitty lead the way.
“Food. Logan, my mentor, runs an outreach center. For kids who’d end up in juvie, and others who need help. This year he’s planning on a big event. Fireworks, cook out, contests. Entrance fee goes towards charities.” She grinned at Diana, then went and paid for a hat for herself. She already had one, but now they matched and it was fair.
“That sounds like an excellent way to spend such a holiday. And a wonderful way of giving to the community as well.” Diana was definitely a fan of helping people. Perhaps she’d make a donation as well.
“So you’re totally welcome. If you want to come. The kids would probably like seeing you again.” Kitty figured bribery with the children was a good way to go. Not that she had any ulterior motives. “Now do you want to do something exciting, or something silly?”
“I would like that, thank you.” Diana said with a warm smile. “I will also make donations to the charities.” She enjoyed giving to the community, and while she wasn’t American, she felt that it would be an excellent way to celebrate the holiday. “How about something exciting?”
“You don’t have to, but I know he’d appreciate it.” Kitty touched Diana’s arm, then pointed towards one of the lands. “Lets start over there, there’s a nice roller coaster that’s exciting!”
“I want to. I enjoy helping people.” Diana smiled at Kitty. She looked in the direction that Kitty pointed, then looked back at her. “Lead the way!”
