Kara had never thought about becoming a personal assistant and it wasn’t like she was thinking of a permanent career change, but she needed something that was a little more reliable than freelancing until she could get a permanent job at a newspaper or magazine. It wasn’t even guaranteed that she’d get this job, but when she’d seen the post, she couldn’t pass it up for some reason.
She’d read about Tony Stark; after all, who didn’t know who Tony Stark was? And she simply figured that a job working for Tony Stark of Stark Industries had to pay well; even a personal assistant job and if it did, she would be able to help Alex out a little more around the apartment. They shared the apartment and she couldn’t expect Alex to continue to pay more than half the rent just cause she had a better job.
After sending in her resume, Kara had waited to hear back and when she had, an interview was scheduled and now here she was, waiting in a receptionists office to be seen for said interview.
Tony had the girl he was interviewing come up to the top floor where he had his office and lab. He didn’t want to keep her waiting, though he was in the middle of a couple of things at the time they’d set up for the meeting. When it was a couple of minutes past, Tony came out in a rush, wearing a lab coat, goggles, and elbow length rubber gloves.
The door opened and Tony stepped through. “Sorry I’m late. Kara, is it?”
Kara had seen pictures of Tony Stark in the paper and in magazines and he always looked suave and put together, the last thing she’d been expecting was for him to come out looking like a mad scientist. Blue eyes widened behind her glasses as she got to her feet, teetering a little on her heels. “Yeah. Yeah, that’s me.” She wasn’t entirely sure what to make of the man standing in front of her, “Kara Danvers. It’s nice to meet you, Mr. Stark.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Ms. Danvers. Elaine,” Tony said, turning to look to the secretary. “Please hold my calls while Ms. Danvers and I have our interview.” Not that he expected many calls. Tony mostly dealt in text messages and emails, anyway. He turned to lead the young applicant into his office.
“So, Ms. Danvers,” he said, moving around the desk toward the dry bar. “Can I get you a drink?”
Kara followed Tony into his office, taking in the various things inside, almost unable to believe that she was there in Tony Stark’s office. At the sound of his voice, she turned towards him when he spoke from the bar, “Um, water would be fine. Thank you.”
Tony nodded, then pulled a water bottle from the fridge. He offered it to the young woman, then turned to fix himself a scotch. Neat. “So, what makes you think you’d be a good personal assistant?” He asked, still pouring the amber liquid into his crystal tumbler.
Kara took the bottle from Tony, thanking him as she did. She was just taking a sip when he presented his question to her and she swallowed it quickly as she went over a list in her head. She had assumed that this question was going to be one of the first that was asked so she had prepared, “Well, I’m extremely organized and good at multitasking, so if you needed me to do more than one thing at a time, I would be able to handle it. I’m good at taking notes and my writing is extremely neat. I’m really good with all of the Microsoft Word Programs.” It was possible that she was talking a little too quickly, but she wanted to make sure that she didn’t forget anything, “And I’d be fine going out to get coffee or lunch or whatever you might need to send me out for.”
Tony nodded. It was an answer he’d been expecting. Able to multi-task, neat, clean, et cetera. He wasn’t surprised, and it was pleasing. She’d said pretty much what he was hoping to hear. He moved to his desk and slipped into the chair, carrying his tumbler with him. “How many hours each week were you looking to work?”
“I can do whatever you need, really. Ideally, I’d love full time. Forty hours or whatever you consider full time.” Kara brushed dirty blond curls over her shoulder, “I live with my sister and she pays more than half our rent, so I’d really love to be able to pitch in my fair share and not make her do more than she needs to do.” She knew that she was rambling and probably supplying more information than she needed to, but she couldn’t help it.
“Ah.” Tony nodded. Full time sounded like it might be enough, though he’d probably need more than that. She could take time off while he was at work, actually, and get her own errands and whatever else done. He drummed his fingers against the glass in his hand. “What were you imagining by way of compensation?” He asked. These were some of those questions and conversation pieces that had to come up at a job interview. Besides, he was curious what she was expecting.
This was the part that Kara always hated about job interviews, because she honestly never knew if a potential employer would think she was asking for too much and considering she’d never worked as a personal assistant before, she didn’t really know how much they usually made. She had done a little research on the position though and told him the amount she had talked to Alex about during the whole process then waited to see exactly what he would think of it.
Tony nodded, considered for a moment, then set his glass down and leaned in a little. “I think we can do a little better than that.” Because this wasn’t just a personal assistant job in California. This was a personal assistant job to Tony Stark in California. She was probably going to pull in about $100k her first year. “That is, if you want the job. You’re hired.”
The last thing Kara had expected was to get hired on the spot so it took her a moment to realize exactly what Tony had said, “I...yes. Yes, I want the job.” She would be a fool to turn it down after she had come all this way. “Thank you, Mr. Stark.”
“Good.” Tony gave her something of a relieved smile. “You can start on Thursday. Until then, rest up? I’ll have our Human Resources Manager send you the paperwork.” He turned back to his desk to get back to work.
