Usagi had found a pretty decent spot in a park to call Kenzi. With Luna on her lap, Usagi smoothed out the picnic blanket around them. She stroked the cat’s head, frowning. “You won’t be mad at me, right?” she asked her companion. The cat looked up at her, gave her a very grumpy look, then resumed laying across her lap. Usagi laughed. “Kenzi should see! She’s one of my best friends!” She smiled. “I met a lot of amazing people on that network… I’m glad I bumped into Miss Lina.”
A few people passed by and Usagi quickly scanned them, frowning. Dark haired men had her staring at them hard lately, and she felt ridiculous for it. Still… could he be here? Somewhere?
There was someone dark haired approaching, but none of them her dream beloved - nope, this one was clearly female with unique fashion, but even she’d tone it down for comfort for the smoldering summer months. Violet skin-tight jeans, a fishnetted shirt over a skull-printed tank top, and her perpetually straight hair pulled into a high ponytail. Kenzi was easy to spot as Usagi was.
Not many people had blonde hair that long.
“‘Sup,” she greeted with a salute. “And aw, you brought your kitty? And she’d not freaking out? Cuuuute. Hi, Luna. Does she understand people?”
“My gut says yes, but I don’t know. She’s probably the best actress if she does.” Luna glanced up at Kenzi, tilting her head and sniffing toward the girl. She hopped off Usagi’s lap to take a seat next to her. Usagi smiled up at Kenzi, happily. “Look,” she offered the transformation brooch over. “This is one of the items I had in the dreams!”
Damn. Talk about shiny. Kenzi took a seat down too, letting Luna adjust to her presence - she had experience with kitties, and Tigra was always on the special side wth how she’d led them to the entrance of the Underworld once. She would assume this one knew how to understand the human tongue no worries, kitty, she wouldn’t talk shit about you or whatever.
“So this turns you into a superhero?” she asked, twirling the brooch in her fingers curiously. “It’s damn purty. And magical or whatever?”
Usagi nodded. “Yeah! Want to see?” She bounced a little, excitedly. Luna looked at her, then to Kenzi.
Oh snap, she was going to get a show? Kenzi clutched the brooch to her chest tightly, pale blue eyes widening. “Like, here? Like, now? Because I’m good with the now but I don’t know about the here. We can go sneak off into the trees or something unless you want to become the next YouTube sensation.”
Usagi looked around before she gestured to a large willow tree. “That’s hanging really low! How about there?”
“If you say so, toots,” Kenzi agreed before casting a glance over at the feline, shrugging. “Right, pussycat? Alrighty, let’s go so you can have me all staring in awe.” That brooch was carefully returned, almost like she was afraid dropping it would cause some magical explosion burst through the park.
She rose from the bench and pushed Usagi towards their cover, whistling like they were doing nothing suspicious.
Usagi laughed at Kenzi, and looked back to see Luna following casually, tail flicking. Once under the cover of the tree, Usagi turned to face Kenzi. “Okay, so, I haven’t used it in this world more than once before… so it at least worked at home!” Swallowing hard to ignore her little bit of anxiety, she stuck her right hand into the air. “Moon Prism Power! Make up!”
It was almost near instant, a flash, pink ribbon-like glowing beams wrapping around her body and in the end… Usagi stood clad in a sailor suit, tiara, gloves and boots. She giggled nervously, looking down at herself.
What.
The.
Eff.
No, seriously, what? That was a burst of shiny, girly magic that enveloped Usagi and transformed her clothes into - uh, well. Actually, Kenzi dug the look. Would it withstand a wet t-shirt contest, however? “You know how to run in those heels?”
There was a motion to the boots. “This is a pretty hot superhero costume you’ve got going on here, y’know - for reals, ten out of ten. Who’s your designer?”
Usagi laughed. “I don’t know! I just know my guardians wore this type when I was a princess, and now I’m wearing it. I’m… I don’t know I’m the princess in my dreams. The girls don’t think I am--actually, we’re certain Sailor V is since she has a crescent moon mark on her forehead.”
Kenzi had to circle this new version of Usagi, contemplating the ensemble - she’d read comics with superheroes that wore skimpier things, and if she could save the world and rock the clothes at the same time then go get it, girlfriend. Fight evil, look totes fab doing it. “You guys got a case of reincarnation-amnesia,” she said, tapping her chin. “Maybe V’s like, a decoy? Or she’s trying to overthrow you? Gasp, the plot thickens.”
Usagi laughed, shaking her head. “Sailor V has been saving the day for months! She’s good, I feel it.” She patted her buns. “I think… maybe you’re right, the decoy part.”
What were those things in her buns, anyway? Kenzi reached out for a hesitant poke n’ prod of them, hoping she wouldn’t get zapped by whatever moon prowess they could potentially possess. “So, what, you got peeps after you and V’s there to throw them off the trail?”
“It’s called the Dark Kingdom, they’re an enemy that are after the princess and the crystal. The ones that attacked the Moon before. They went after my friend, then they started going at the other girls that are sailor guardians too. They drain your energy--life force--and…” She shook her head.
Anything with the adjective of ‘dark’ attached to it tended to carry a negative connotation, yeesh. Kenzi’s arms crossed and she leaned against the trunk of the tree, frowning. “So, uh, they at least don’t know your the princess yet? Where’s that crystal though? They’re obviously on the right track if they keep going after you and your girlfriends. Like, you’re legit right under their noses.”
Usagi shook her head. “I remember last that I thought mother, the queen, had it. But right now, none of us know where it is. It’s somewhere and we must find it before they do.” She sighed heavily. “I wonder where it is here?” She paused, flushing slightly. “What… do you do if you love someone in the dreams?”
Oh, man. What a switch. From ‘where the shit is this uber powerful crystal’ to ‘luuuurve.’ Kenzi’s smile was sly and so amused. “You talking about the dude you had a Romeo and Juliet over, huh? Honestly, dreaming about loving someone’s a totes normal thing around here - and it can be normal to feel those feelings here too. Sometimes you meet them here and sometimes you don’t, I don’t know, but - don’t let that hold you back from lurving someone here, y’know? Unless you’re happy waiting for him for however long it takes.”
She and Hale were in a thing in her own dreams, but things naturally progressed with Birkhoff and she was happy - that nerd filled a chunk of her heart, and she wouldn’t give it up because Mr. Chocolate Abs finally graced her with his presence either.
“Mm, it’s… I loved him, sure, but there’s this man, Mamoru Chiba… He’s--he’s different but similar. He makes me so mad but then he also makes me feel really warm and fuzzy and…” She smiled. “He saves me a lot.”
D’aww. All she wanted was to hug her to her bosom, she was so innocent. “Someone that’s not your prince, eh? But, hey, what if he is? You got reincarnated, so did your friends, so what are the odds that your earthly boo did too? Do they look anything alike?”
“HIs eyes, definitely,” Usagi smiled at Kenzi. “I… Do you think I could find him here, maybe?”
Wasn’t that always the question with these things? Kenzi didn’t see why not. Her shoulders shrugged. “You could,” she confirmed. “My bro’s a private investigator, if you’ve got the right intel he can try looking him up if it’s really eating at you. But then what? You’re going to try and have him remember another life on top of the one that he doesn’t remember living from the one you’re dreaming about?”
Mannn, talk about a mouthful.
Usagi nodded, smiling. “Yeah… If we’re meant to be here, we’ll find each other again.”
“Try not to stress too much about it, y’know? You’re cute, you’re graduated, you’re almost eighteen and have the rest of your life ahead of you - and if the dude comes along and you two do the married thing and make babies, kudos, moonface.” Kenzi gave her a comforting pat on the shoulder. “And when you do turn eighteen, I’ll buy you your first beer and take you out around town for some girl times.”
Usagi laughed, nodding. She reached out to hug Kenzi, bouncing a little. Luna looks at them and gave a haughty little cat snort before letting out a meow. Usagi looked to her and gave a nod. “Right, I should change before someone sees…”
“You could just walk around owning the outfit, girly, because you do,” complimented the fashionista, stepping back from their cute little hug moment to take in the view of Sailor Moon before giving a thumbs up and an encouraging wink. “Someone might mistake you for a stripper but that’s when you pepper spray them in the face, y’know?”
Or let Kenzi take out her brass knuckles and tenderize someone’s nose like meat.
Usagi grinned, looking down at herself. “This is really nice, but I should change.” She touched her brooch and the transformations lowly dissipated, leaving her back in the clothing she was in before. “Phew.”
“If only changing outfits was that seamless,” she tsked, then let out a loooow whistle ‘cause damn, Kenzi was jelly of that perk. She kinda wanted to rock an outfit like that too. “Don’t start stalking alleys and trying to fight crime, though? I mean - the whole outfit’s gotta come with some kind of power trick to it, right? I can’t see you punching someone, toots, sorry.”
Usagi didn’t seem like the type that had it in her but she could be totes wrong. Watch out for the sweet ones.
Usagi winked at Kenzi. “I’ll only fight crime if you’re by my side!” She threw her hands up though, laughing. “You know, it’s funny… The me in the dreams hates I’m a ‘super hero.’ She wants to be a normal girl. But here I am, an actual normal girl with this as just a… a…” She struggled with the right word, frowning. “Well, you get it.”
“There’s nothing really normal about you anymore,” Kenzi provided, crouching down to see if Luna was nice enough to let her be scooped in her arms. Shush, kitty, let yourself be loved - she was even willing to give those scritches behind the ear like all animals usually liked. “You just proved that with your transformation thingy, and you know one day that might really come in handy, right? This place vomits all sorts of strange things into our lives. Demons and aliens galore, so - hey. Maybe one day you really will be saving people.”
While Kenzi got drunk somewhere in a bar, typical things.
Usagi smiled. “But for the most part, I’m still a normal girl trying to figure out what to do in life!” Luna definitely likes scritches, so she let herself be picked up by Kenzi, purring.
Kenzi had to snicker a little. “If you saaaaay so.” Well, she at least hoped Usagi stayed mostly normal. Normalcy for most dreaming people kinda jumped out the window, and the world was often redefined in their own terms. Considering her best friend was a succubus, her half-brother Captain Hook, and her sister-in-law the Evil Queen from Snow White with a chamber of literal hearts beneath her house?
That was the new normal for her.
“C’mon, I’ll walk you home with the kitty and scare your parents a little, make them think you’re going down the wrong path of darkness or something.”
Usagi laughed, grabbing Kenzi’s arm and hugging it to her chest, leaning into the other girl happily. “‘Kaaay!” She looked up at Kenzi. “Thanks for being here.”
“Wait until I introduce you to alcohol,” she promised, her smirk as sly as a fox’s. “That’ll be your new best friend when things get weird.”
