Will had finished his exams and was a free man so he’d decided to treat Spencer to ice cream and see how she was handling her recent freedom too as well as her dreams of course. It was like a mystery to be solved and Will loved a good mystery.
Spotting her at the park where they had decided to meet he gave her a wave, “Hey you” he greeted, “How you doing?”
Spencer was thankful that she had friends she could talk to outside of those she shared dreams with about the craziness that was her Dream World. Will always seemed open to listening, and brought forth good explanations and understandings that Spencer appreciated. When he texted her to meet, she was excited to spend some time with him. She’d arrived to the park early, and sat with a Kindle Book on her phone while she waited.
The sound of his voice brought her out of her pages, and she broke into a smile at the sight of him. “Hey.” She stood and pocketed her phone. “Good. Enjoying summer. You?”
“Yep same here now that I’m free of school” he grinned, giving her a hug, “What are you reading? Please tell me it was something good” he added, he couldn’t help being a bit of a literary snob after all it was his specialty.
“I found this great author called Mary Roach,” Spencer replied after returning his hug. “She writes these really entertaining nonfiction books on a bunch of different subjects. This one’s about what happens to human bodies after we die.” She motioned for him to take a seat, too. “I’m dying for a bit of mocha ice cream.”
“Well that sounds cheerful” he teased her with a grin, Will’s tastes were definitely more on the fiction side of things but he dabbled occasionally. “I do think I’ve seen one of her books at Tessa’s shop though, all about humans in war” It had looked reasonably interesting, “Ooo mint chocolate chip is my current craving” he admitted as he sat with her.
Spencer gave a little laugh. “Yes, well, she does make it cheerful. That’s the fun part. She makes jokes and explains things in such a way that it’s not morbid or depressing. It’s actually a really fun read.” Less academic than most of what Spencer read normally. “I think that one’s called Grunt. It’s on my to-read list.” She lifted a hand to flag down the lady behind the counter. They had table service, so she could bring out the ice cream for them. “Mint chip is pretty amazing, too.”
“Well then next time I’m in a non-fiction mood I’ll pick it up and give it a go” Will liked humour to discuss things, he used it a lot himself. “It’s the best flavour ever, I’ve always had a soft spot for it” he winked.
“Sounds good. Then we can talk about it. You’ll have to let me know what you’re reading now. Maybe I’ll pick that up next, and we can make a book club out of it.” Beat. “It’s still a book club if there’s only two people in it, right?”
Spencer grinned at the wink. “I’m tempted. But I think I’m going to go with coffee. Maybe with chocolate drizzle.”
The waitress came by to take their ice cream order, and Spencer let Will order his first.
“I’m reading a fantasy series at the moment, I’ll let you know the details if you’d like and I think two people can definitely still count as a book club” he grinned.
“You Americans and your coffee” he teased before placing his own order for mint choc chip with extra chocolate sauce.
Spencer laughed as the waitress wandered off with their ice cream orders. “Well, I can’t help it if coffee is amazing,” she said, grinning over at him. “And yes, this book club sounds like a wonderful idea.” Something to keep their minds off any weird Dream related junk that may come up in Orange County.
“No taste” Will grumbled good naturedly, before nodding, “I think so too. And if we made it a book club with ice cream it’d be even better” he winked.
