Aurora had so many people she wanted to talk to now that she’d met her parents. She felt light and airy. But first on her list was Laura. If only because she was the first person that she messaged about it. Next would be Logan and Killian. She felt like she was walking on air as she walked to meet Laura at the park. She was wearing a light blue dress that flowed around her as she walked. Her hair hung around her face in loose waves.
The moment she saw Laura, she grinned widely and moved over toward her quickly. “Hello! I’m glad you could be here!”
“Hello.” Laura felt instantly better when she saw Aurora, all flowey like her dress. Not that she’d been in a bad mood, but she went from indifferent to happy. “Of course I made time for you. Don’t be silly.”
Aurora smiled, hesitating for a brief moment before moving to give Laura a hug. She didn’t know if it was okay, but she couldn’t contain the urge to hug her. Mostly because she was still excited about everything. “But if I wasn’t silly, you’d think I was a fake me.” She couldn’t contain the giggles that escaped her after that moment.
“It was so wonderful,” she said after a moment. “They were so lovely. I still have no met them in the dreams, but my fairy godmother is there with her friend, Diaval. He is the crow that took care of me and played with me all these years. I feel as if I am so happy that I do not know if I could be happier.”
It was okay. Laura hugged her back. She often left these things up to Aurora, having learned from certain ex-girlfriends that people appreciate that sort of thing. So it was no longer ‘I don’t do hugs’ but ‘I’ll do hugs if it makes you feel better and okay they’re kind of nice too’.
“It would be hard to fake you. So you finally met this woman? Is she everything you thought she was?”
“Yes. We spoke some! It was very nice!” She felt warm and happy and so when she pulled away, she spun around and clasped her hands together in front of her. “She was...different, I think. A little uncertain of me, I think. She expected me to be scared of her, but of course I wasn’t.” How could she be?
“How have you been? Good?” She hoped that she was good, that things weren’t so bad for people outside of her. She knew that it wasn’t always good for everyone else.
“I don’t know why you’d be scared of her.” Laura didn’t think that Aurora would be scared of anything. She reminded her of her sister in that way, anyway. Fearlessly cheerful.
“I’ve been good. There was a singing curse going around.”
“I think she thought I would be scared because of how she looked. I told her not to be scared, but she said she was not. Then I asked her to come out and she said that I would be scared. Only, I wasn’t. I had seen her before.” And Aurora was sure that she was wonderful and good. She was her fairy godmother after all. “And then Diaval was very gentlemanly for a crow.”
She had heard about that. Killian had asked if she’d been singing. She hadn’t, though. At least no more than normal and never without meaning to. “Were you singing? Kilian asked if I was, but I hadn’t been. I suppose I was a little preoccupied. I’m glad I wasn’t affected when just meeting my parents. They might have found me too odd after only having met me once.”
“A gentlemanly crow.” Laura smiled. Somehow, she wanted to trust both of these people, but she wasn’t like Aurora. She didn’t trust easily and she worried that people would take advantage of her friend.
“I sang. It was… fun.”
There was a nod. “He’s so wonderful! I didn’t even know he could turn into a human. Though, I guess he can’t. The Horned Woman turned him into a human.” Aurora had a feeling that the falling asleep part was also her, but perhaps that was just because the place where the fairies lived was a secret guarded by thorns.
“Do you like singing? I like singing sometimes and humming. Especially if I’m in the greenhouse, but usually I choose when I sing.”
“Was it against his will?” Laura didn’t think she’d like being a human if she was an animal. Some days she’d prefer to be an animal.
She put her arm around Aurora and squeezed. “SInging was fun. I never knew I’d like it.”
“Well, probably? But he didn’t seem very upset about it at the time. I didn’t think to ask if he was.” She frowned for a moment at that. She’d been so overwhelmed by the amazement of it all and the magic. “If I ever meet Diaval, I will have to ask him.” But then...she might never meet him. He might always be a crow. Just a crow that would never know her.
She pushed the thought out of her head, however, to focus on Laura. She smiled a little, not just at the words, but also the arm around her. “It is fun! It makes everything more fun, too! Like if you’re doing something you don’t like, you can sing and it’s suddenly more fun!”
“You should. Or maybe he’s happy with it now. Can he control his shape-shifting? I’ve known shapeshifters, they usually love it.” Rahne Sinclair in particular. She always smelled happy when she was in wolf form.
“I don’t usually do big public displays,” Laura admitted. “But at least I have an excuse to try it now.”
She nodded, deciding that she would ask him if he minded. If they ever met outside of the dreams. “I don’t think he can control it. I think it is all her. She has magic. I think if he could, he might have changed before when I was around him.” Unless he was trying not to frighten her.
“You don’t have to do it publicly. I mean in the house or...or well, somewhere you like to sing.” She smiled, her arm moving to wrap around Laura’s waist to make it less awkward to walk along. “We should find one of those ice cream stands!”
Laura nodded, letting Aurora lean against her. “I’ll have to try it. I understand people sing in the shower?”
Which was bizarre but Laura was willing to try most things at least once. “What’s your favorite flavor?”
“They do!” Aurora laughed at the thought. “More than we probably even realize. I usually sing when I’ve got a song stuck in my head, but sometimes I just think about things very deeply instead or just don’t think about anything. I think it depends on the day and what’s going on.”
The shower was useful for lots of very serious thinking. “Pistachio, but I also like chocolate.”
“I’ll have to try that. I usually just stand there.” It was all very melodramatic and often emo, but at least she’d learned to deal with her emotions in a healthy manner. A year or more ago and it was a different thing entirely.
She wrinkled her nose. “I’m not sure nutty ice cream sounds that good, but I’ll try it.”
Aurora shrugged. “I guess everyone’s got a shower routine.” She hadn’t really thought about various shower routines as a thing, but it didn’t really surprise her. Surely no one did exactly the same thing as someone else. That would be a little odd. “But you could definitely try singing there.”
There was a laugh. “Well, you don’t have to if you don’t want to, but I’ll share if you’d like.” With that, she pulled away, grabbing for Laura’s hand and pulling her along in her search for ice cream. Even if they didn’t have pistachio, she would find something. Strawberry wasn’t terrible as long as it was ice cream. Strawberry milk was not pleasant. “Once we get it, we can find a bench or sit under a tree or something and I can tell you all about meeting my parents! And not just the parts I already told you.”
