“So when is his birthday?” Myrcella asked as she gathered together all the things they would need for a practice run with the barbecue. Being a Brit Myrcella knew how to do it and being in California it meant they got to do it much more often than back in the UK.
As soon as Irisa had asked for help she agreed, she liked Athos too. He’d helped her friend find a place and despite his best attempts Myrcella always thought of him as a cuddly bear rather than a scary one.
Irisa was eternally grateful that Myrcella had offered to show her how to barbecue since Irisa had no idea. How the hell did you even tell if the stuff was cooked or not? Picking up some tin foil and packs of meat, she followed Myrcella’s instructions keenly. “Uh, on the 30th, but it’s a friday, so I wasn’t sure whether I should do it on the day or the next, what do you think?” she asked.
“Saturday might be better” Myrcella nodded, “More people are likely to be able to go without work getting in the way. Have you invited people yet?” she asked before nodding as Myrcella laid out the foil onto the grill, while Myrcella picked up the coals.
“That’s what I was thinking,” Irisa replied, watching Myrcella intently as she put the meat down on the side of the barbecue. “Uh, no, not yet. I was planning on stealing his phone for a few minutes and copying his contacts list then sending out an invite to them all. What are you doing with that foil then?” she asked, segueing smoothly from one topic to another.
“That’s a cunning idea” Myrcella said with a smile, “Okay so I put foil on the grill in order to cook the meat evenly. And the spare foil is to cook the mushrooms and onions and other things” she explained, “It’s essentially like cooking on a grill only the heat comes from below instead of above”
Irisa shrugged, the idea of stealing the phone just seemed to be the easiest way to her. Plus it would give her an excuse to try out her sleight of hand skills on someone more intuitive than the average Joe. She looked over the set up that Myrcella had going on. “So how do you know when stuff is cooked? And how long it needs?”
It was something Myrcella probably wouldn’t have thought of, but then her sleight of hand was awful. She was an incredibly honest person and her face would give everything away. “You kind of just can tell, like meat always turns a different colour and shrinks a little” she explained, “You’ll see”
Irisa looked dubious and made an unconvinced sound as she stepped back from the barbecue, eyeing the thing suspiciously. “You’re going to be there right? You and Jeremy?”
“Of course, we'll happily watch the cooking if you're still worried on the day” Myrcella offered, “I bet you'll get a lot of people offering their opinion too. Men all love to think they're king of the barbecue”
“Listen, if everyone’s going to start giving me their opinions on how it should be done there’s gonna be some black eyes by the end of the evening,” Irisa told her friend. “You’re definitely going to have to be here to moderate that.”
Myrcella burst out laughing at that comment, “Don’t worry after the first black eye I think people will get the hint but we’ll try not to let it get that far” she promised.
“Please do! A criminal record would really kill my chances of being a PI,” Irisa told her, relieved that her friend would be there. “And I was talking to Alucard about music too. Do you have anything...mild and inoffensive I could play as background music?” she asked.
“I promise I won’t let that happen, you need that licence after all” Myrcella smiled at her friend, so glad she’d found something that suited her so well. “Easy listening just happens to be a large part of my music selection, I can see Athos as a fan of the rat pack era. I’ll be sure to bring a selection along” she promised.
“Great, thank you! I’m not sure he’d appreciate what I listen to, a bit too heavy metal,” Irisa grinned “I think this is going to be ok,” she said, feeling a little bit more confident than when she started.
“Yes, it’s certainly...loud and shouty sometimes” Myrcella grinned at her friend, giving her a one armed hug, “It’s going to be great, now flip that steak” she winked.
