Irisa knocked on the door to Alucard and Integra’s and waited. She’d contacted him, knowing it was Athos’ birthday coming up at the end of the month and they’d decided to meet up to scheme up something to celebrate the old man. Rolling up her sleeves as she stood on the doorstep, she looked back out over the driveway while she waited and adjusted her sunglasses.
The door opened and Alucard gestured for Irisa to come in, “Drink?” he offered her in greeting as he closed the door behind her. While he could go out in the sun he generally chose not to, it wasn’t painless and he wasn’t keen on it anyway. However planning a surprise for his old friends birthday he was keen on. “You know he won’t want a fuss” he stated, leading her to the kitchen.
“Please! Have you got any orange juice or anything?” Irisa asked as she followed him through the door and to the kitchen. “I know, I know, but I want him to at least know how much he’s appreciated. Besides, he'd shoot me if I tried anything too huge,” she joked. Although in the back of her mind she was very aware she could make him quite uncomfortable and never speak to her again. “You've known him longest, what sort of thing do you think he’d hate and what sort of thing do you think he'd like?” she asked, settling down on one of the kitchen barstools.
“I should think so” Alucard said, opening the fridge to remove the juice and get a glass from the cupboard. “It’s very good of you to think of it, he’ll be very touched you did so” he said, knowing it would mean more to Athos than he would show. He was a good teacher and Alucard knew he had a soft spot for Irisa. “Something low key, perhaps even at his own home. He does love his house by the sea, maybe I could call him away and you could start the barbecue or something. Just a small gathering of his friends”
“A barbeque…”Irisa sat up, considering. “I don't know how to do a barbecue...but I'm sure Myrcella and Jeremy won't mind me experimenting on them,” she tilted her head as she thought about it. “I think that would be a great idea, it's small enough that he can't be too mad at me and I'll clean anything that we use,” she told him. “Would it be OK to ask people to bring whatever food they want to have cooked and stuff do you think?” she asked. Parties were really not her thing, she was invited to few and hosted less.
“If you need a hand I am sure I can help or perhaps Myrcella herself, I recall her being a bit of a cook” Alucard said with a smile before nodding, “Absolutely, bring your own is a fairly usual occurrence for such a gathering and I’ll provide a supply too for those who forget” he added, he didn’t mind funding it all. “Anything you need to order just let me know and I’ll give you my credit card” he added.
“Thanks, I think I'll need all the help I can get!” Irisa quirked a smile at him. She had to admit to being nervous about the prospect of a brand new style of cooking, but she was also looking forward to it somewhat. She liked a challenge. “Wait a sec, aren't barbecues normally done during the day? Would you or Integra be able to come?” she asked.
“You’ll be fine, I assure you” Alucard said before waving off her concerns, “That my dear girl, is the wonder of gazebos and the shade. I can get us into the house with little bother, then we can simply ensure there is enough shade to get outside” Alucard never let little things like the sun get in his way.
“Are you sure that’ll be ok? I don’t want to risk getting you or Integra hurt for a barbecue,” Irisa asked as she reached for her glass to take a drink. She didn’t want her first barbecue to be be a disaster by hurting her closest friends.
“It will be fine. I’ve been to Athos’ before during the day and there is definitely shade in the garden, I’ll ensure it is so” he said reassuring her.
“Ok, if you’re sure,” Irisa nodded, setting her glass down. “And music? Should there be music?” she asked.
“Background maybe” he said, “It’s not going to be a rowdy party. More people enjoying other peoples company. He may try to come across as a grumpy sort but he has a good heart and an interest in those he considers friends”
“Yeah, although I’d love to see Athos’ face if I played club music,” Irisa winked at him.
Alucard laughed, “I’m not sure anybody wants to see that face”
