Yang wasn’t in the best mood, but if there was one thing guaranteed to cheer her up, it would be her sister. She stopped by a bakery for some cookies and a box of cupcakes, then swung by her dad’s place and put on a smile she wasn’t feeling. “Ruby? I hope you’re home I have cookies! C is for cookie, that's good enough for me! C is for cookie, that's good enough for me!”
Oh great.
Ruby was just thankful Taiyang wasn’t around given he’d usually start laughing whenever she started singing and getting frustrated because of said singing. Not to mention more sing offs with jerk faces. Honestly, she just needed to get through the next two weeks and then it would be summer! Which meant able to work on her own projects. Okay and find an internship for the next year. And help around the house. But summer.
At present, she was in the living room glaring at her computer screen as if willing the assignment she needed to work on to write itself. Spoiler alert, it wasn’t.
But then she heard Yang’s voice and perked up.
“Yang!” And scrambling up she went to the door only to blink. “It got you, too.” Cookies were (momentarily) forgotten as Ruby was at least relieved to find out she wasn’t the only one stuck with the singing. Though. It could just be Yang being Yang. Oh well.
“Hey there Ruby butt.” Yang wrapped an arm around Ruby, squeezing her hard enough to lift her off the ground. Not that that was hard with how slight Ruby was, but a Yang-hug was a Yang-hug.
“Yeah, I got bitten by a cricket.” Yang looked momentarily upset, though it wasn’t at the singing part. She put Ruby down. “I wanted to see how my favorite sister was doing!”
A Yang-hug wouldn’t be a Yang-hug if Ruby wasn’t lifted off the ground. Still, it was good to see her sister so she really didn’t mind it even if she swatted some at Yang as was the normal way of things.
Noticing the look, Ruby’s brow knit forward in concern.
“Are you okay?” She knew that Yang wouldn’t tell her if she wasn’t, but she still had to ask. But then the question on how she was as she was placed back on the ground. “Oh you know, end of the quarter so it’s all Write what you know so they say all I know is I don’t know what to write or the right way to write it--” And randomly singing, which she managed to stop by squeaking and clapping her hands over mouth as if that would stop it.
As if this hadn’t been going on for days now.
"Nothing that cookies can't fix," Yang said. She didn't want to get into it and figured Ruby wouldn't really care about romantic troubles or ruining a perfectly good girlfriend (look at her, she’s got anxiety now!) because of dreams. She ruffled Ruby's hair, her grin returning in full force. "Looks like you got bit too!"
“Cookies can fix a lot.” Then again, Ruby had no grasp of or interest in relationships and thought they were were messy and pointless. Though she’d still support Yang, it just wasn’t her thing personally. Not that she really paid attention to the dream talk on the Network either. But apparently her musical suffering was amusing to Yang so swatting at the offending hand, Ruby nodded. “It makes class interesting I guess? But studying not so much.”
"Study~ing is a good thing!" Yang sang-song, stretching her arms up over her head. "Isn't it almost time for summer? We should go to the beach. Have some fun! Maybe see if we can get Blake to tag along. That girl needs some sun."
All Yang needed was Weiss and Pyrrha and Nora and Ren and her life would be complete. And then she sang for reals, "When life gets rough I like to hold on to my dream. Of relaxing in the summer sun just lettin’ off steam!"
“I know that but singing me doesn’t.” Because otherwise she wouldn’t be singing when she should be studying and thus distracting herself. “But yep! The quarter ends the 16th and then I’m free until September.” Yay freedom.
“Oh, the beach could be fun. And I’m sure she’d come along if we let her read under an umbrella.”
“We’ll have to get her into the water at least once,” Yang decided. Easier said than done but she had a few plans. Obviously she couldn’t just throw her into the water. Not yet anyway. They weren’t that close. “We could all use the break…Even you, Rubles. You’re working so hard. And I’m so proud of you!”
“Only if she wants to.” Ruby was used to Yang, but she also had some sort of unspoken understanding with Blake in their social avoidance and awkwardness. Ruby was more likely to throw herself into things to just try. But she knew that if someone really didn’t want to do a thing, trying to make them do it wouldn’t be good. But it wasn’t like she knew how the beach would go.
“A break would definitely be good.” Smiling some at the compliment, Ruby nodded so that they could head to the kitchen so they could have milk with the cookies Yang brought.
“I know,” Yang replied. She smiled reassuringly, “I dial myself back around her.”
Which was an admission in and of itself that Blake was important. She made a beeline for the fridge, pulling out the milk, then closed it with her hip. “Glasses still in the same spot?”
That was interesting, but Ruby shrugged it off. All she knew was that it meant that Blake hopefully wouldn’t be made too uncomfortable because of different personality styles. So it was to the kitchen and nodding.
“Yep!”
“Got it!” Yang pulled down the glasses and a moment later was sliding a full glass down the table towards Ruby. “Remember when we’d make a game of this kind of thing?”
She was confident enough to hold her own glass with her mechanical arm. “I got you cupcakes too.”
Unlike when she was younger, Ruby caught the glass and nothing fell off the table and broke on the floor. There had been a lot of broken glasses there for awhile.
“Yep. Dad said he would have to buy plastic cups if we kept it up.” Good times, good times. And then there was the mention of cupcakes. “Ohhh, cupcakes. You really didn’t have to. Cookies and you are always good combinations as it is!”
“I considered switching to plates but then Uncle Qrow caught me,” Yang remembered. She grinned, hopping into the counter and swinging her legs. She smiled at Ruby. “For you I’d do anything. You are my sister, And I love you. May all of your dreams come true, I want this for you. They're gonna come true."
Giggling, Ruby returned the smile.
“Others may leave, but you will still be there
When I am lost you are my light
You are the love that never dies.
You are my home
You make me strong
And in this world of strangers I belong to someone
You are all I know
You’re all I have
You are my home.
I will not walk away from you
I will not let you go
You’re the only home I’ve ever known
You are my home
You make me strong
And in this world of strangers I belong to someone
You are all I know, you’re all I have, I need you so, I won’t let go.
You are my home”
Yang’s eyes watered up and she stopped eating her cookie mid-bite to hop off the counter and rush over to Ruby, squeezing her into another hug. She felt so guilty for shutting down on Ruby in the dreams. She’d never abandon her again.
Unexpected Yang hug with tears in her eyes was so not what Ruby was expecting. Okay, there was a lot she hadn’t been expecting recently (like this random urge to sing things) but this was even more unexpected. So all she did was return the hug.
“I’m sorry if I sang something wrong. It’s all okay. Really.”
Because clearly it had upset her sister and that was the last thing Ruby had wanted to do. She had felt so bad that she couldn’t help Yang with her accident, or how she had been avoided but she always knew that Yang would never let her know if she wasn’t okay but Ruby was always going to be there for her sister.
“No, no, it’s okay.” Yang wiped her eyes. “I’m just really touched. Sometimes I don’t feel that strong myself, but I always try to be strong for you.”
She hadn’t really known she’d needed to hear that until now.
Smiling some, Ruby gave a small nod.
“Well, you’ve always been the strongest person I know. So there.”
“If you say so, then it’s gotta be true,” Yang replied. She looked like she was about to burst into song. And she didn’t sing, but she did singsong, “A perfect sister I am not, but thankful for the one I've got!”
“Exactly.” And that was all there was to it. And it was back to sing song-ing, so Ruby just shoved Yang affectionately before eating a cookie.
